Re: Sample Work Flows
A. In answer to Canuck's question, no I did not preview my menu prior to burning a DVD. I missed that key step and must now learn how to do that, and modify my Share workflow.
B. And the perhaps the best way to answer your question Brian, I'm providing my Share workflow to show what I did after completing my Edit workflow.
VS Pro X9 Share Workflow (Create DVD)
1. With project showing it the timeline, load blank DVD into Rewritable Drive, and
2. > Share, > Disc icon, > DVD, and then, under “1 Add Media” tab,
3. > Add/Edit Chapter icon, (on upper left side of pop up), and
4. In the Add/Edit Chapter pop up, click on the desired scene clips to select the desired
six Chapter Points, and remove the remaining Chapter Points, using > Add Chapter, or
> Remove Chapter.
> OK, > Check Create menu, (on left side)
> Next,
5. In “Currently displayed menu:” options, (under Preview screen), select current project to get
all 6 chapter’s thumbnails into the Video menu.
> Gallery, > Smart Scene Menus, (under Gallery on left)
> Virg 4 3 (menu provided by Trevor, to match my previously used royal blue version w/ six motion thumbnails)
6. Key in Video Menu title, i.e.; Virg & Marti Mueller’s Family Movies, at 24 font
Arial and Bold DVD #___ at 24 font
(right click on desired verbiage to obtain desired font type or size)
Key in each Chapter title, i.e.; Chapter (1 thru 6) at 18 font
Arial and Bold MM ‘YY (Chap start date) at 18 font
7. > Next, and, > Burn (disc icon) The rendering process will take 15 to 20 minutes.
8. When process is completed, > Save
C. As you can see, I also missed your recommended step of rendering my project to an mpeg-2 file. That was a major error on my part. I will add that to my Share workflow above, as a new step before my existing number 7. Would that be the correct place in my Share workflow above?
D. And I also stepped in it again by not knowing how to, "play each one in (say) windows media player to see if they are good and what I wanted." I will try to figure that out after I achieve your prior suggestion of rendering my project to mpeg-2 files.
Now that I'm back at it, I was finally starting to feel that I'm getting very close to being able to tackle my project, but then I stumble and hit another hurdle. I'm most sincere in saying thanks for your patience and coaching. Virg Mueller

1 / on the last panel before hitting Burn, choose to "Create Disc Image"
Deselect Create Disc
An ISO file file will be saved to your hard drive, using VLC Media Player play this file, just like playing the disc, menu's and movie.
From Tools we can burn this ISO to disc ( think its called Burn Disc Image ISO)
2 / to play the individual Mpegs we had assumed or recommended that you convert your project to Mpeg2
if you had six individual projects then you would have 6 individual Mpegs, they could be played prior to burning a disc.
then do 1 above to complete the disc.
There is an option to render parts of your project to separate files using the Project Range options.
You could use that to render the 6 individual video's
Using 6 separate Mpeg's would only need a Title menu with no need for the chapter menu.
At the moment you are creating one movie and applying 6 chapter points, first create the iso as in 1 bove
There should be no real problem in trying 2 above as it would not affect your original work flow.
Get to the point of creating the ISO and the disc can be burnt at any time.

Re: Sample Work Flows
Thanks Trevor. I want to implement your suggestion, but after completing the first six steps on my Share workflow (as listed on my Post from yesterday), I select MPEG_2 but I can't find an option to do as you say and select Create Disc Image, or to deselect Create Disc. I'll try to provide a Post with a "snip" snapshot of my VS ProX9 screen which shows my options after selecting MPEG 2.

Re: Sample Work Flows
hi verg
you said " Is it possible to play my edited movie including my completed video menu,"
that has to be after you have created the menu structure
From Share - create disc DVD we open the burner module.
On the last page we can "Burn" our disc, but if we select " create disc Image" an iso file of the entire movie is created, including your menu.
We can play those files (ISO files) using VCL media Player.
I do not have access to Video Studio at the moment so the terminology may differ, but the approach is the same.

Re: Sample Work Flows
You are not missing anything. Creating a mpeg-2 video file and creating the disc image are two separate operations. The mpeg-2 file is created to check whether your main video (with your edits, transitions, etc) is as you want it. There is no menu, chapters invlved at this stage. You should always do this before you even consider creating menus and burning to disc. You use this mpeg-2 file when you are ready to actually create the disc by loading the mpeg2-file into your timeline and then you proceed from there to create you menus and burn the disc. The image file is only created when you have selected to create a DVD; there you are given the option to create a disc image (iso) file or a folder set when you are at the immediate burn stage.virg wrote:This is the snip snapshot of my VS ProX9 screen after selecting MPEG 2 and wanting to follow your instructions to select "Create Disc Image," but I can't find that option. Re: Sample Work Flows
I want to follow your suggestion to request my video file be converted to an MPEG 2 file. But can you tell me where on the eight step Share workflow that I posted on Fri Apr 22, 2016 8:27 pm should I be selecting MPEG 2, or, are you saying selecting MPEG 2 should have already been requested sometime during my Edit workflow?
Based on the last response, I'm also understanding that you're saying, "Creating a mpeg-2 video file and creating the disc image are two separate operations." But my question is; when should I enter the Create MPEG 2 step on my Share workflow, or should it be a part of my Edit workflow? I currently select my six chapter points and add my Transitions in step 3 and 4 of my Share workflow, before creating my Video menu in step 5 and 6 of my Share workflow.
I of course trust your coaching that I should create an MPEG 2 file and want to do it, but I don't understand where in my workflows should this important step be placed. Virg Mueller

Re: Sample Work Flows
I would put the create mpeg-2 file as the last step in your edit workflow. When you are happy with how your main video file looks and you have saved yo ur editing project, select Share and then select Computer as your destination for your mpeg-2 file.
Select MPEG-2 and then your specific mpeg format you want as well as the file name and folder to store you file. Once your project has finished rendering you can play the video file using any software player you have.
If you are happy with the result you then start a new project and insert the mpeg-2 video on the timeline.

Re: Sample Work Flows
Just checked my old VS 11 Plus workflows from years ago and found that the only reference to MPEG 2 was in step 3 of my old Share workflow, which stated;
3. >Share, >Create Disc” from center pop up, to open the burn module, and
Check in the second icon in the bottom left (it looks like a little cogwheel) to insure that
“Do not convert compliant mpeg files” is ticked. This is very important!
At no point did I need to convert my video files to MPEG 2, so perhaps that's why I'm struggling with where I should be placing that important step now that I'm using a more sophisticated software tool. I accept that it's a really lame excuse, but it's the only one I can come up with. Virg

Thanks for the quick response Canuck. I will add the create MPEG 2 file at the end of my Edit workflow, but should I then request that the chapter points, Transitions, and Video menu I create in my Share workflow also be converted to MPEG 2? Virg

Re: Sample Work Flows
Two questions;
Like and have accepted the advice to be able to preview my completed video on my computer before burning copies to a DVD. And I also accept that I should have my video in MPEG 2 format prior to advancing into my Share workflow. However, at the conclusion of my Edit workflow, after I have completed editing my hour long video into six logical segments, inserted five Transitions, and saved my file, I can't find an option to allow me to select MPEG 2. The screen shot below is my VS ProX9 screen at the conclusion of my Edit workflow.
1. Where am I to find the option to request your recommended step of selecting MPEG 2 at the end of my Edit workflow?
My second issue is, if I select the Share tab at the completion of my Edit workflow and select the "Computer" icon instead of the disc icon for my output, I'm not finding the option to select "Create Disc Image" as recommended.
2. Am I not understanding your suggestion correctly, because I not finding the path or steps to continue when I get into the Share tab.
Virg

Re: Sample Work Flows
When we say at the end of editing create an mpeg-2 file we assume that you know that in order to do that you must go to the 'Share Tab" and select the computer icon - we do not mean that you will find a means of creating videos in the EDIT tab - so YES when you finish editing go to Share - all videos are created in Share then selecting the correct option
You Will NOT find the "Create Disc Image" option on that page - that is on the final page of the burn disc module AFTER you have created your DVD menu by going via 'Share' and the disc icon
test your mpeg-2 file finding it in Windows File Explorer and RIGHT clicking on it and choosing PLAY from the pop-out

Re: Sample Work Flows
Thanks to your advice and coaching, I have completed a full DVD of our remaining family movies with successful editing, transitions, and six motion thumbnails in my Chapter menu. A minor issue that I have not been able to resolve occurs when selecting any one of the six Chapters for viewing, using a Sony blu ray player connected to a Sony flat screen TV. The selected video chapter begins, but the Chapter menu is ghosted over the initial frames of the selected video for brief period before it slowly fades away. I tested my player and TV combo using DVD's created some years ago when I still used VS 11+ and the ghosting problem doesn't occur.
Haven't been able to determine why this problem occurs or how to prevent it. Any suggestions for eliminating this brief ghosting of the Chapter menu over the beginning of my video? Thanks in advance for your time and assistance. Virg

Re: Sample Work Flows
Hi Virg
Nice to hear you have managed to create the DVD.
Fading Menu
From Share Created Disc DVD, opens the burner module.
At the bottom of the Edit tab there is a Motion path option.
That fades in or out the menu after pressing play, I am assuming this is your issue?
I am not sure that VS 11 had that feature
Deselect the Moving Path option.
