Hi Virg

There may be some confusion here.

Are you creating one project / video having 6 sections accessed via a menu, this would use Chapter menus.

Or
Are you creating 6 shorter separate projects/video? This would use 6 titles within your menu.

A / Menus are created via the share – Create Disc process when using the burner module.

C / Saving your projects gives the project a suitable name this can be done at anytime from 1 to 4

You are certainly correct when you suggest, "there may be some be some confusion here." Unfortunately, the confusion is all on my part. But in answer to your question, my project is to create an approximately one hour long video of home movies, that is divided into six unequal sized sections. The only separation between these six sections is a "Barn Door" Transition. But in an effort to be consistent and continue what I did when I was still using VS 11+, it is my objective to have one menu at the beginning of my video, and to have that menu contain six motion thumbnails (each representing the initial frames of that specific section of home movies), in two horizontal rows of three thumbnails, on a single page or opening frame of my video. With VS 11+, I was able to do this on a solid blue background, and was also able to add some minor identifying date information on that opening menu.

When viewing the finished product (DVD), one can start at the beginning and play the entire video, or select any one of the six motion thumbnails, and be taken directly to that specific section. I determine the length of my sections, based upon the duration of the family events that were being filmed.

I hope this is a better explanation of my project, and my question is,

Is it is possible to continue doing this, now that I'm trying to learn VS Pro X9?

In the interim, I will do as you pointed out and name my Project earlier in my Edit workflow, and save it to that Project name when I'm finished editing. I will also get back to trying to follow through the VS Pro X9 User Guide, now that you have cleared up the question about when the Menus are to be created.

Thanks for the help and look forward to hearing your answer. - Virg

Based on what I'm reading in the VS Pro X9 User Guide, I think that the Menu I used when I still had VS 11+ is now called a "Disc Menu," because on page 269, under Creating disc menus, it states, "Disc menus allow viewers to easily navigate through the contents of a disc and easily choose the specific parts of the video to watch. That's what I'm trying to duplicate now that I'm using Pro X9. But while in the Edit tab, as instructed, I can't find the icons that the User Guide instructs me to use on page 269;

"In Corel VideoStudio, you can create disc menus by applying menu templates and editing them to suit the requirements of your projects.
To apply a menu template
1Select Create menu in the 1 Add Media page and click Next. This takes you to the 2 Menu & Preview page.
2 In the Gallery tab, click the menu template thumbnail to apply it.

But I can't find the icons or "Create menu option" I'm supposed to select.

And on page 58 under Adding Cues and Chapters, it instructs me;
"To add project cues
1Click the Chapter/Cue Menu.
2Click Cue Point.
3Drag the cursor to where you want to add a cue point and click the bar below the Timeline ruler. Notice that a blue arrow icon is added."

Again, I can't find the icons or items I'm supposed to select.
I also can't find the "Set the background button" in the Edit tab to select Motion menus as referenced on page 269.
Obviously I'm missing something, and that's in addition to the apparent required amount of smarts to take on this project.

1. Am I correct in thinking that the menu I want to duplicate, from VS 11+, is now called a Disc Menu?

2, If so, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might be doing incorrectly that is preventing me from finding the referenced icons or labeled options to click?

You have to be in the Share workspace to create menus. You can't do it from the Edit workspace

You are really making this much more difficult then it is. I get the feeling that you are not reading the responses we are giving you.

Whether it is called disc menu or something else is irrelevant

Hi Virg

The workflow you used with VS11 has not changed when using CVSX9.
Even though X9 may have more editing techniques the process used is the same.

Thanks for the explanation as to your project, now I understand you are making one project then applying Chapter menus when burning the disc.

Have you completed the editing of the project up to the point where you wish to burn a disc? its at this point that you create the chapter points.

Have you finished ALL of your editing and made your final video ??? -

Then AND ONLY THEN - click on the "SHARE" tab - then select the disc icon - then select "DVD"

it will then take a few seconds to open a new window where you will see the first of the icons you are searching for as below

clicking "NEXT" in that window will step you through all the other steps and icons you are currently unable to find

click on the image to see it larger

For Canuck, I appreciate the help obtained on this Forum and read every post, and in some cases, I read them multiple times. That's why I was asking the question about when does one attempt to create a menu for my disc project, because I had been reading in the User Guide that I was to click the Edit tab when preparing to create menus. I trust what I learn on the Forum but feel that I owe it those who are helping me to try to reduce the number of my questions. That's why I try to work through the User Guide first. I use the "Search" option frequently to search multiple sections of the User Guide to more thoroughly research an issue that I can't complete.
I'm learning that effort frequently causes more confusion for me than assistance. I'm not inferring that the User Guide is incorrect, because I'm sure it isn't. But I am suggesting that the User Guide is not written for a novice like me. That's why I am so thankful for, and rely so much on, the answers provided by those on this Forum. Trust me, I read every response, suggestion, and answer to my questions.

For BrianCee, thanks so very much for getting me back on track again. Yes, I have finished all of my editing, except for creating my video menu, which I was mistakenly thinking needed to be created in the Edit tab. Per your explanation, I will address my video menu in the Share tab.

The guidance and instructions you provided are great and the image you included is the icing on the cake for me. Thank you Brian, and I'm back to work on my project as soon as I finish reviewing your post again. Virg

Hi Guys. I have two issues and I'm embarrassed to admit the first one so let's get it out of the way first. Somehow, some way, while in the Edit tab, I lost my Preview window or screen. I have tried multiple things like getting out of VS Pro X9 and logging in again, and switching temporarily to the Capture tab, and searching for other options, but can't seem to regain access to my preview screen. I lost it while using the old trial and error method to add the steps at the end of my Edit workflow to build what I think is called a menu.
1.Can someone explain how I can get the Preview window or screen back?

My second issue is related to what the User's Guide, on page 269, refers to as a "disc menu." I also read where the User's Guide discusses "Title menus," "Disc menus," and "Chapter menus." As a result, I fear that I'm probably using incorrect terminology. So perhaps it would help if I use a generic explanation of what I'm trying to continue accomplishing with VS Pro X9 that I was successful in doing with VS 11+. It is my objective to have one menu, (a form of a Table of Contents) at the beginning of each of my completed approx. hour long videos, which are made up of six separate unequal length segments or clips. My menu (or Table of Contents) is to contain six motion thumbnails (each representing the initial frames of their associated section of home movies), in two horizontal rows of three thumbnails each, on a single page or opening frame of my completed video.
2, Which of the three title names should I be using when referring to the "table of contents" that I described above, that I want to add to my video when I start my Share create step?
Embarrassed Virg.

Hi virg

Are you saying you cannot see the preview screen from Edit mode

Try pressing F7 key, that will set the workstation to its default view.

Burning a disc.

I assume you have the project open showing in the timeline, then you Share Create disc which opens the burner module showing your movie as a single thumbnail.

1 / This thumbnail will be part of your Title Menu
2 / For each thumbnail / movie added a link or thumbnail will show on the Main / Title menu.
3 / each of the movies can have Chapter points applied.
4 / You have a single movie that you intend to create chapter points.
5 / Select the thumbnail – choose Add/ Edit chapters… this opens another panel where you can create the chapter points.
6 / then OK and Next
7 / From the gallery choose Thumbnail Menu as that is the same as used with VS11.
Choose a template?
8 / The title / main menu will show, edit this menu adding / correcting the text.
9 / Under the preview screen choose the Currently Displayed Menu will allow you to view the Chapter menu
10 / Edit this menu.

Ok

There is a better / different way that involves rendering your 6 segments to a new video file, you will have to take a step back to the edit timeline.
Now you have 6 video files
To burn a disc….
Start a new project – nothing in the timeline – Share Create Disc – opens the burner module
1 / Add Video File Adding your 6 videos
2 / 6 thumbnails in the Title menu
3 / No need for Chapters
4 / Next to edit the Title menu

Thank you Trevor. I did as you suggested and clicking F7 brought the Preview window back immediately. I had spent what seemed like endless hours trying to figure out what I had done wrong to lose it and how to get it back.

I'm also understanding you to say that I am to create my main menu in the Share tab, and not in the Edit tab. This is a confusing point for me because as someone had advised, I had checked my old Edit workflow for VS 11+ and found that I had created or developed my Title menu while I was at the end of my steps in the Edit tab workflow. I had also misunderstood Brian's post on March 15, when he asked,

"Have you finished ALL of your editing and made your final video ???" Then AND ONLY THEN - click on the "SHARE" tab - then select the disc icon etc. etc.

I thought he was saying that developing my main menu was to be done in the Edit phase. But that wasn't the first, and won't be the last, time that I "stepped in it." I will follow your instructions as you just listed and try to accomplish the development of my main menu in the Share tab.
I sure do appreciate you help Trevor.

Hi Virg

It is true that we can add chapter points in the Edit timelines, they will show as green arrows at the top of the timeline.
Give them names from Settings – Chapter point Manager. ( not available using VS 11)

When you access Burner Module – Share Create Disc the chapter points will be available. (again this was not possible using VS11)
However so as not to confuse the issue we advised creating the chapter points from the burner module, which is probably the best place to do that!

I know both Brian and myself are both advising to create the chapters in the burner module.

1 / Edit the movie
2 / Share – Create Disc – here we create our menu including chapters.

Have followed your suggestions to develop the draft VS Pro X9 Share workflow listed below, but can't get beyond Step #4 to implement your next suggestion. I have inserted my draft workflow, with your remaining suggestions in italics after Step #4.
1. With current project showing in the timeline, load blank DVD into Rewritable Drive, and
2. > Share, > Disc icon, > DVD, and
3, > Add/Edit Chapter, and
4. Adjust Chapter points in Add/Edit Chapters pop up, and
> OK, > Check Create menu, (on left side)
> Next,

5. From the gallery choose Thumbnail Menu as that is the same as used with VS11.
Choose a template?
6. The title / main menu will show, edit this menu adding / correcting the text.
7. Under the preview screen choose the Currently Displayed Menu will allow you to view the Chapter menu
8. Edit this menu.

The pop up, after Step #4 is labeled "Corel Video Studio" with three options labeled 1 Add Media, 2 Menu & Preview, and 3 Output. Only one of these is active and that is the Menu & Preview option which is highlighted. The Preview window has the opening frame of my home movie in it. There are sample menus in the Smart Scene Menus Gallery on the left side of this pop up Preview window.

If I select the "Edit" option instead of the "Gallery" option of this pop up, it permits me to select Motion menu (which I have), but I can't find where I can select an option to create the customized menu with a solid blue background to include my data that I had used to create and edit all of my main menus for each of the videos I created using VS 11+. I would really like to maintain consistency and continue that process. There is a small options box, under the preview window of this pop up, but the options only include Main Menu, Main Menu Note Menu, and Untitled.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Virg

See if this helps

It is made in an older version of Videostudio - - BUT - once the "Create Disc" window opens - the one with tabs labelled - 1 Add Media, 2 Menu & Preview, and 3 Output - then X9 is the same

Thanks for the Post Brian. I watched your video twice and found it most interesting, but I'm still not finding where or how I can find the options that will allow me to develop a main or Title menu that presents a solid or single color background, on which I can enter and edit some dates and information about the events in my completed video. My questions are:

1. If this is still possible with VS Pro X9, am I correct in understanding that it should be accomplished in the Share tab?
2. If so, I'm looking for an option or pop up after my Steps 3 & 4, which are > Add/Edit Chapter, > OK, > Check Create menu, and > Next. Is that the right place for me to be searching for an opportunity to create a Title menu that doesn't use one of the samples available from the Gallery?
