Re: Sample Work Flows
Hi
There are a few ways to access the Import Digital Media panel
From File – gives the option to import to library or import to timeline.
So yes that is probably the best option as it allows importing the virtual clips to the library.
If you simple right click the timeline no library option is given, import will place the clips on the timeline.

Re: Sample Work Flows
That is not at all helpful Trevor - virg already has a procedure using the 'IMPORT Digital Media' option under the CAPTURE tab - it provides different options than the INSERT you are suggesting than what virg wants to do - he wants to MOVE his videos from the disc onto his computer ready for editing
Right clicking on the timeline is not where we are starting from in virg's procedure

Re: Sample Work Flows
Brian
Right clicking the timeline gives the option to Insert Digital Media and opens the “Import from Digital Media” panel where we browse for our files, which may be a camcorder.
But there are other ways to open that panel and via File menu may be the best choice as that gives the option to import to library.
And yes there is the Capture tab route for Import from Digital Media, but that does not give the option to import to library only same as timeline options.
Maybe I am missing something in item 9, where are these
9. > Start import, and the Import Settings pop up appears --I don't see this?
> Check Capture to Library, and
> Check Insert to Timeline, and
It may be the connected device that Video Studio is seeing and giving different import options to other devices?
What’s not helpful about that?

You don't see it because you are not using Import in the capture tab - INSERT does not give the same options
OH get on with it - over to you - I've gone

Re: Sample Work Flows
I had read the Pro X9 Users Guide over and over again Brian, but continued to struggle in my efforts to develop my Capture workflow. Thank you for your valuable time and for understanding the errors I was making. Your coaching provided the help I needed to comprehend more about the process. I also appreciate your suggested addition at the start of my workflow. If I'm understanding correctly, I now create the new Library folder only in my Step 1 for my New Project. As a result, I have modified my workflow as follows:
1. Open Pro X9, and > Edit, to create new Library folder if this will be a new project,
> + ADD, top centre of the screen, and when a new name 'folder' appears, it will be highlighted in blue. Type in new name for that Library folder, and
2. > Capture, and > File, and
To create a new project, > New Project
To open an existing project, > Open Project
Load Camcorder mini dvd, to be captured, into the “E” drive (slide-out tray in Tower).
3. > Import from Digital Media, in the Capture workspace, and pop up will appear.
4. > Check Select Import Source Folders,
5. > Check DVD RW Drive (E) DVD, and ensure no others are checked.
6. > OK, and > Start, and wait for clips to appear in Import from Digital Media pop up,
7. > Check small box in upper left of clips to be imported, and
8. > the small folder icon at the far right of the Working Folder line, and
9. Scroll to the desired folder in the “Browse For Folder” pop up, and
> Select it, or > select Make New Folder (storage folder) and give it the same name as
the Library folder above in Step 1 above, > Select it, and
> OK,
10. > Start import, and “Import Settings” pop up will appear shortly, and
> Check Capture to Library, (Storage library) and ensure that the option shows the same name as my
new Library Folder (use tiny black arrow on right to access changes), and
> OK, and imported video clips will appear in workspace.
Your explanation and recommendation to not check "Insert to Timeline" has also been adopted.
Have tried your suggestion to "Make sure you have selected that new folder before moving to your next Step 2." When I do, the new folder seems to be hi-lighted after I select "Add" and name it, but I don't see an opportunity to select it. I'll keep working on that.
I will also make sure the "Capture to Library" option shows the name of my new Library folder.
Question - Does the Importing process begin when I > Start, in my Step 6, or at the beginning of my Step 10. I ask because according to my workflow, I don't ensure that my destination folder matches correctly until my Step 10.
Thanks again for your coaching Brian, as well as your extra effort to help a novice understand how to use this tool. The development process had become a most unpleasant task until now. Your help has motivated me to start reading through the Pro X9 User's Guide again to prepare for the task of developing my Edit workflow. Thanks Brian.

Re: Sample Work Flows
Having completed my Capture workflow, I have been reading the Pro X9 User's Guide to try to start developing my Edit workflow, and have a question about the Pro X9 Edit feature called "Instant Project." My project objectives are not sophisticated, and are simply to:
Capture and mildly Edit our Camcorder mini dvd home movies, that are physically stored and marked in chronological date sequence, and burn the output onto standard sized DVD’s, to continue and compliment my previously completed project to achieve the same process for our earlier 8mm, Super 8, and VHS home movies project using VideoStudio 8 and later 11+. Each of my completed DVD’s includes about one hour of home movies in the chronological sequence they were taken, with each final burned DVD to having:
1. A beginning Menu ( table of contents) with;
2. Menu heading to include my DVD number and MM & YY start times to MM & YY end time frames entered, and
3. Contents divided into six unequal sized segments, using logical event breaks to divide, and
4. Six Moving Thumbnails, on the Menu, for each of these six segments.
5. Each of the six segments, or chapters, to be separated with a “Barn Door” Transition.
6. Each DVD segment thumbnail, on the menu, to also indicate the start date of the thumbnail segment contents.
I’m not interested in adding music, voice over, inserted names (except on Menus and Menu Thumbnails), still photos, or sophisticated editing. If I hadn’t lost my VideoStudio 11 Plus software in a computer meltdown, I could use that same software program and the Capture, Edit, and Share Workflows I developed for it.
My question is, would you advise me to try to build my Edit workflow around the Pro X9 feature called "Instant Project," or should I develop my Edit workflow from scratch, using my old Video Studio 11+ Edit workflow as a starting point?

Re: Sample Work Flows
Hi Virg
Instant Projects tend to be used to create an intro or ending for your main projects I would not think suitable for what you are doing, but certainly explore the Instant Projects to see what they do.
So far you have imported your video files to the pc and added/ inserted those to the timeline, this is where you will edit and create your movie. This is far the hardest part…….editing the project.
Once completed you should use Share to render the project to a video file.
Remember you are working with a project a VSP file that is not a video file.
So we convert the project to a suitable file for our output, in your case burning a DVD, and that will be MPEG2.
A DVD disc holds 4.3 Gb of data, so you can burn 4.3 Gb of video to a disc, that can be in one video or individual videos. Approximately 70 minutes can be burnt to disc at full quality
If you choose to create separate video files, for each you add to the Burner Module / disc a title link is created on the main menu.
I think this is probably your best option as editing short 10 / 15 minute projects is easier than one at 70 minutes.
Basic Workflow
1 / Import Video to PC
2 / insert clips to timeline – edit project
3 / convert / render project via share to create a new video file
4 / Burn a DVD adding your video or videos to the burner module, Max 4.3 Gb
take it step by step, you are at 2
Your old editing process from VS 11 has not changed and can be used with X9
we may of course tweak that for you????

Re: Sample Work Flows
Hi Virg!
I don't think you can do #4 and #5 in the same project (I could be wrong though)
If you want #4, then each of your 6 segments will be a Title on the Main menu
If you want #5, then you will have to combine all 6 segments into one video file, here you can insert your barn door transition between each segment. You would then create your main menu which could have a Play button to take your to the start of the full video. In addition you could have a Chapter button which would take you to the Chapter menu where you would have buttons that link to the individual segments. You woulf of course have to define your chapter entry points.
Perhaps it is possible to have the Play button and the Chapter buttons on the main menu page. I have never done that and personally would not do it that. Commercial DVDs are not setup that way.

Re: Sample Work Flows
Thanks Trevor for your help. Based on your explanation, I will scrap the "Insert Project" idea and use my old VS 11+ Edit workflow as a draft to construct my Pro X9 Edit workflow.
And thank you as well Canuck for your thoughts. The six objectives I referenced above were all accomplished some years ago, but I was using VideoStudio 11+ to do it. I suspect I'm using the wrong terms to describe my old VS 11+ project and objectives, and confusing you professionals in the process.
The DVD's I produced from our old home movies are a big hit with our grandchildren and that's why my wife wanted a commitment from me that I would finish the task. Forgive me for not knowing the proper terms and for using incorrect video terminology. As an example, based on your comments, I made an effort to research it after getting your Post, and learned that when I referenced having "Moving Thumbnails" in my old Menus, I now suspect I should have used the term "Motion Thumbnails" in my old Menus. This old paratrooper isn't as sharp as he once was, and some would say, he wasn't all that sharp in the first place.
Thanks for the help guys and I'll get busy working on converting my old VS 11+ Edit workflow. It takes me a while since, more often than not, I'm doing trial and error tasks to implement the suggestions and techniques you guys provide.

Re: Sample Work Flows
Have tried to implement your suggestion to use my VideoStudio 11+ Edit workflow, but it doesn't work. I will attach this VS 11+ workflow so that you can confirm that you think it should work with VS Pro X9.
1. Open VS 11+ and >Video Studio Editor,
>Edit, >File, >Preferences, to insure that “Show message when inserting first video clip into
Timeline” is selected. This will prompt me to answer “Yes” to the question “Do you want the
project properties to match the properties of that captured file?)
2. >File, from top left menu bar.
>Save, to name this new project, i.e., Proj __.
>Save, this should replace “untitled” in upper left corner, and
the project name should now be followed by the letters, “.VSP”.
>Edit, open captured video by name, i.e., “VHS __” or “DVD__” from folder in upper right,
or click on its’ associated icon on the upper right and then,
>Drag & Drop, this icon into left side of the film strip.
>Yes, to question, “Do you want to change the project settings to match the. …………etc.,”
3. >Play button, to preview, just to insure the video is in fact the desired home movie to be edited, and then,
>Stop button to stop, and >Home button to return to the starting frame of the edited movie.
4. >Clip, over Project, and then,
>Multi-trim Video, from the right side pop up.
5. Advance movie to the desired frame, and select a “Start” & “End” for each Chapter segment,
>OK, when all Chapters are marked accordingly.
6. >Effect, from top tool bar to select desired transition effect at Chapter breaks.
7. >Film, to change options to >3D,
>Drag & Drop, the desired transition effect, i.e., “Barn Door” or “Turn Page”
in between each of the Chapters on the time line,
8. >Title, from top tool bar and,
>Home, to advance the movie to the opening frame, and then
double click on the Preview Window to add an opening title for the completed DVD,
i.e.; Virg & Marti Mueller’s Family Movies 20 font
DVD #___ 40 font (all in “Times New Roman”)
MM ’YY to MM ’YY 20 font
9. >File, from top left menu bar.
>Save, to save this new project, i.e.; Proj __.VSP

Re: Sample Work Flows
Hi Verg
The main difference between UVS11 and CVSX9 is the layout.
How you complete the editing should be the same, just features may be in a different position.
X9 has made a vertical column between the preview screen and Library to hold some icons Tabs.
In addition the Library has taken on a different look, viewing Video Photo and Audio in one panel.
1 and 2
Capture video to pc
Insert clips to library
Use show messages
Drag clips to timeline
Save project name shows new name top right not left.
5.
Advance movie to the desired frame, and select a “Start” & “End” for each Chapter segment,
>OK, when all Chapters are marked accordingly.
Should read “clips” not “chapters”.
Chapters are used when burning a disc, not a problem but may be confusing.
I don’t use Multi trim but prefer cutting the clips on the timeline, same results.
6 and 7
transition libraries are assessed via the vertical column AB icon,
Drag transition effect between Clips (as you call them Chapters)
Set default transition durations from the preferences panel, press F6 or Settings Preferences, Edit tab.
8.
Titles accessed via the vertical panel “T” icon, same process as uvs11
Again set default duration via F6 preferences

Re: Sample Work Flows
Thanks for the explanation, and per your suggestion, I'm now working to modify my old VS 11+ Edit workflow to function as my VS Pro X9 Edit workflow and have a few questions.
1. When starting in Edit mode, what are the recommended steps to add a video folder with its clips from the Storage Library to my working library? I can get it there but I fear my trial and error procedure is improper.
2. Are clips to be drug to the Time Line before starting the trim process? I ask because the only way I can get the Single Clip Trim pop up to appear is by double clicking on a clip while it is still in the Library in the upper right. I can't access the pop up for Set Mark-In and Set Mark-Out for the clip after it's already in the Time Line.
3. How do I mark the selection point for time duration of Transitions?
4. Is there a time duration indicator for multiple clips, in addition to what I think is the time duration indicator for a single clip that is in the viewing window?
5. I'm also desirous of using the same form of title page that I used with VS 11+ for our first fifty DVD's. I had used a solid blue background, with six motion thumbnails which were the opening frames of the six edited segments of the finished DVD. I would really like to continue that with the final decades of our home movies. Hence, I've tried to test and document that process with VS Pro X9, but I'm striking out. The User's Manual discusses title capability but after clicking the Title button I'm not finding the path or instructions regarding:
A. Are motion thumbnails even available with Pro X9?
B. Is it recommended to attempt titles in the viewing panel or on the timeline?
C. The manual says center alignment is available, and I found the icon symbol, but can't get it activated to center align the typed title info and dates.
Sorry about having so many questions guys.

Re: Sample Work Flows
Hi verg
1/ when transferring (capturing) (importing) the files from the camera to the pc, they are saved to a folder of your choice, on an internal hard drive.
The files can be “inserted” to the library or timelines, what you see are virtual files, think of them as thumbnails.
Right click the library or timeline and choose “Insert”, browse for the files in your folder. (that is your capture workflow)
2 / Sorry but I don’t use Single Trim, I prefer to cut the clip on the timeline and delete the pieces I do not want.
There is a Multi Trim option that as far as I know does a similar job,
right click the clip for this option.
Edit Menu – Multi Trim Video
As I say I use the scissors on the timeline.
I don’t wish to confuse things but this web page shows some details of the trim bar below the preview screen, may be useful.
http://www.lata.me.uk/corel/trimbar/trim_bar.htm
3 / Go to F6 preferences – edit and change the default duration
After adding a Transition, Double click to select the transition to open options panel below library, set duration in digital clock.
Or with transition selected drag ends to change size.
4 / Don’t Understand, Digital clock far right of timeline shows project duration
or select word project next to start button, then End button, view digital clock shows total duration of project
5 / There seems to be some confusion regarding Titles and DVD menus.
From the timeline the “T” button accesses a “text editor” that is used to create text on screen, they are indeed titles but Text Titles.
The burner module is accessed via Share – the disc symbol then DVD
This opens the burner module, when we add a video file, that movie is referred to as a Title, so yes some confusion can arise.
We can discuss the burner module, which should be the same as VS11,
You should finish the timeline editing, then we can move on to the burning stage.
A lot going on, take it easy, don’t rush

Re: Sample Work Flows
Have finally developed the below listed Edit workflow, and more importantly, it works for me up to step 6.
VS Pro X9 Edit Workflow
1. > Edit, to open Edit workspace, and
> + Add, to permit scrolling available folders to select desired folder, containing Captured home movie videos,
or to add a new folder,
2. >> Double right click on a clip in the Library, to launch Single Clip Trim dialog box,
Use Scrubber, Jog Wheel, and “next” or “previous” frame buttons for desired start frame,
and end frame,
> Set Mark-in, and > Set Mark-out and, > OK, for each of six segnents, and
3. > Storyboard Timeline icon (far left above timeline workspace) and
> Drag edited clips to the Storyboard Timeline, in their chronological sequence, and
> Yes, to “Do you want to change project settings to match the video’s properties, etc., in
the Corel VideoStudio pop up.
4. > File, > Save, and type file name in “Save As” pop up, and
> Save, the Project name should now appear in top right.
5. > AB, to select “Barn Door” Transitions effect, and drag it in between desired clips, and
(>Settings, >Preferences, > Edit, to adjust transition effect duration.)
> File, > Save,
6. Menus ???? Having problems creating what I think the forum calls Menus, to be placed at the beginning of my video, with six motion thumbnails (representing the six segments of my video) and some associated brief descriptions of the content of my hour long video, on a solid blue background. The VS Pro X9 User's Guide has me confused on this Menu issue.
My questions are;
A. Are menus supposed to be developed and added at my step number 6 in my Edit workflow, or later in my Share workflow?
B. Do you recommend naming a Project and saving one's edited clips to that Project?
C. If the answer is yes, at what point in this workflow would you create and name the project? I'm trying to do it in my Step number 4.
Thanks again for you time in helping me and I anxiously await your suggestions.
