Sample Work Flows

Post by virg »

Please forgive me for probably posting on the wrong topic board, but I haven't been on the forum for years and I'm trying to locate the proper forum topic to search for sample work flows for Video Studio Pro X3. I really am sorry for not being able to figure out where I should be looking. Ken Berry pointed me in the right direction years ago to find sample Work Flows for Video Studio 11 Plus, and it was most helpful, but due to my wife's serious health battle, I hadn't ever tried to use my new Video Studio Pro X3 software until now. I'm just trying to fulfill my promise to her to complete the task of finishing the rest of our home movies - for our grandchildren.

We are now in X9, so X3 was a long time ago (at least six years ago). I am not sure anybody here will have it installed to help with anything very specific. I suspect the work flows Ken gave you will work with X3. I hope the pc you have is able to run X3 and all your media.

I would suggest you upgrade to X7 or X8 and you will get better support from both Corel and this Forum. Amazon have both still available at reasonable prices now X9 has come out.

When you say sample workflows, do you mean the process of editing a video? Corel have tuition videos in their Support section which cover the workflow and, if you want one to one advice, the Forum is all too ready to help.

Hope this helps.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Hi verg

I think I may have found your older account
View this post, maybe the last post you used.

http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 87#p108387

Video Studio X3 uses the same workflow as other programs, in fact little has changed, yes the program has made great improvements.
But the actual approach is much the same.

Burn a DVD
Video Studio X3 was a little different regarding the burner module, Corel tried a new version that was rubbish. (movie Factory 2010)
They provided a new burner module via service patches, Movie Factory 7se, this is similar to all versions.

Give us more info on what you are trying to achieve, I assume burn a DVD

where are the original video files?
what type of camera, maybe mini dv, so you will need to transfer the footage to the pc
or are the video files on the pc?

can you right click a clip on the timeline and select properties, what are they?

Wow! You amazed me by finding the saga Ken Berry and you guys helped me with back before my wife became ill. I have just reread those earlier posts twice now, but my current learning issues are in the Edit step. I only wish I was far enough along to be at the Share or Burn step.
I should also point out that I think the sample Capture, Edit, and Share workflow ideas I got from Ken Berry to tailor some years ago, were for VS 8 or VS 11. My current frustration started when I installed the VS Pro 3 that I purchased years ago, but never got to install it until a month ago. I did get the Capture workflow modified and was able to import a couple of my Camcorder mini DVDs with the VS Pro 3. I encountered more problems while trying to revise the Edit workflow and that's when I learned that support and assistance would be much better with current software.

Hence, I took the suggestion and upgraded to VS Pro X9 just to have better access to support, even though my video project objectives are relatively simplistic and don't require the capabilities of the newer VideoStudio systems software. Now I'm back to trying to tailor my detailed Capture workflow to work with VS Pro X9.

Perhaps it would help if I could attach a brief single page copy of the rather modest objectives for my home movie video project, but I wanted to ask first if that is possible and permissible by Forum rules. If not, I understand. I want to abide by your Forum guidelines. Either way, I'm most interested in any thoughts you have to obtain pro forma or sample Capture, Edit, and Share workflows that I may then learn how to tailor to achieve my project objectives as I try to get up to speed using VS Pro X9. Obviously I don't do this kind of project often and found that if I don't develop detailed step by step workflows, I make mistakes and get frustrated, and end up begging you guys for help.

I look forward to your thoughts, and in the interim, thanks again for your suggestions and time. I really do appreciate it.

Following the VS Pro X9 User Guide, I have developed the following Capture workflow, but must have something out of sequence because after completing all preceding steps, there isn't a "Start import" to select to complete step #7.
Capture Workflow;
1. >Capture, >File, >New Project, and insert camcorder mini DVD into my E drive.
2. >Import from Digital Media, >Select Import Source Folders, ensure E drive is checked and uncheck everything else.
3. >OK, >Start,
4. >Select Destination Folder, in "Import from Digital Media" box.
5. >Videos, and select desired named project destination folder in "Videos," and select >OK.
6. Double left click on the media clips to be imported to the selected folder, and
7. >Start import.
But there isn't a "Start import" available for me to activate. Have searched the User Guide but can't find my error.
Any suggestions? Secondly, since I'm capturing from camcorder mini DVD's, do I need to request that I capture in MPEG-2 format?

I don't follow the last bit of those instructions - seems alien to me

do you get to the screen in my image - if yes then you have to click on the little box in the top left corner of each scene to activate the 'start import' button

Thanks Brian. Studied the X9 Users Guide, again, and revised my Capture workflow again as follows;
1. > Capture, > File, > New Project, and Load mini dvd in E drive,
2. > Import from Digital Media,
3. > Select Import Source Folders,
4. > Select DVE RW Drive (E) DVD, and no others,
5. > OK, and Start,
6. Check small box in clips to be imported and,
7. > Start import,
8. > Check, Capture to Library, and > + to add and name a new folder destination of video to be imported and saved,
9. > OK, and Imported video clips will appear in the workplace.
They do precisely that, but they are saved in another folder. instead of the new folder I have just designated. I'm pretty sure my workflow follows what I keep reading in the X9 Users Guide, including the section on page 38 where it discusses "Capture to Library" in the section on Capturing Videos and Photos. Have gone through my draft workflow process more than ten times and it all works except for not being able to save my captured video to a file I have just named in accordance with that specific video. It remains, "folder is empty." Any suggestions?

It is still wrong after item 6 - once you have clicked on 'start import' there are no more choices after that - the videos are imported

BEFORE you click 'start import' you must select where you want the video to go to in the "Working Folder" bar at the bottom of the image I posted - click on the little folder icon and a window will open to allow you to choose where to save the video

Videostudio uses the term "Working folder" in various places to mean the folder you want to use to either import to link into the programme

Hi

As Brian says the clips should be saved to the Working Folder, double check that location.

OK
With the clips showing on the Timeline or Library, right click and choose Locate on Computer should find those imported files.

Many thanks to Brian & Lata, I have modified my Capture workflow to try to select my destination folder before I select Start import. Sorry about that. After my step 5, the Working Folder line becomes hi-lighted with "C backslash Users backslash Virgil backslash Videos backslash Pro X9 test." The Pro X9 test was my prior test folder name I was using prior to getting your needed assistance. I then > on the small folder icon, > select "Make New Folder," > OK, and > Start import.

An "Import Settings" pop up appears and I > "Capture to Library" and > "Insert to Timeline," and before importing begins, another pop up appears and asks, "Do you want to change the project properties so VideoStudio can perform SmartRender?" I don't recall seeing this pop up earlier. But before I can > No, (since at this point, I'm still only trying to develop my Capture workflow,) my computer slows down and stays in that slow state for over 4 minutes. This is a brand new phenomenon. But ultimately, I can select > No, and my test video is imported to the gallery and view area in upper left corner, but not to the timeline.

My questions are;
1. What could I have done to suddenly cause this slow down?
2. Isn't the imported video supposed to be on the timeline since I was asked and clicked yes?
3. When I finally get to point where I am importing videos to edit, should I click yes to, "Change the project properties so VideoStudio can perform SmartRender?"

Hi virg

3 / First the message “Change the project properties so VideoStudio can perform SmartRender?"”

Has always been available by setting Show Messages….. options via (F6) Preferences.
For X9 this option has been ticked / selected by default.

It is recommended that you say yes to that message as that will use the video properties as your project properties. So frame size and frame rates will match.

2 / Given that you saw the above message the program was inserting the clips to the timeline, so I don’t understand why they did not show.
Maybe do a short import test to a new folder to run through the process again, but choose yes to the message.

Thanks to your patient coaching, I think my Capture workflow will now have a decent chance to address my rather simple objectives. But before I start reading the VS Pro X9 User's Guide to begin developing my Edit workflow, I would appreciate your checking my revised Capture workflow below and address a couple of what I hope are minor issues.
1. > Capture, > File, > New Project, and load camcorder mini dvd into "E" drive
2. > Import from Digital Media
3. > Check Select Import Source Folders
4. > Check DVD RW Drive (E) DVD and on others
5. > OK, > Start, and wait for clips to appear in Import from Digital Media pop up
6. > Check small box in upper left of clips to be imported
7. > the small folder icon at far right of the Working Folder line
8. > Scroll and select the desired folder in the Browse For Folder pop up, or
> Make New Folder or
> + to add, and name, a new folder
> OK
9. > Start import, and the Import Settings pop up appears
> Check Capture to Library, and
> Check Insert to Timeline, and
> OK, and imported video clips will appear in workspace.
My questions are:
1. In my step 8, shouldn't I be able to not only select New Folder, but to also select and name it at this time as well?
2. Do you see any "gotcha" type errors in my Capture workflow?
Thanks again for your help, and I look forward to reading your suggestions.

Hi

When you select the Working Folder icon to choose a folder the standard Windows Explorer panel opens (Browse for Folder this allows you to “create a new folder” and give it a new name.
Otherwise create the folder first with a suitable name then do the Import Digital Media.

No I don’t see any problems with your import process, I don’t have a DVD disc camcorder to compare but looks ok to me.
Although I do not see the option to import to library, my version imports to the timeline, and I receive that message to match the properties.
All I see in the lower panel is “Import files to Corel Video Studio pro”, with no means of selection any other option.

I think Brian mentioned that in an earlier post?

But not a problem the task is to get the video onto the timeline.

Hmmmm - seeing things slightly different to Lata I'm afraid

Can I just explain a little about the way Videostudio works - Your videos are captured to - and live forever in a STORAGE folder on your computer - this will be wherever you want it to be - I choose - C:\Users\[username]\Videos\Working folder - where 'working folder' is actually the name of my project (holiday 2015 or Johns birthday or whatever it is)

What you see inside Videostudio is NOT the actual videos - they are 'thumbnails' which are just short cuts to the actual videos etc

So the library folders you see inside Videostudio are not the same folder as your storage folder - your library folder can and often will contain links to numerous different storage folders all over your computer - same with things in your timeline they are not real - if you cut them up your actual video is not cut - it's just virtual

I would change your workflow slightly

my first action would be to create a library specifically for this project so point 1 should say

1 . create new library folder by opening the 'EDIT' tab in Videostudio and clicking on '+ ADD' top centre of the screen - when a new name 'folder' appears in the column under that it will be highlighted in blue - just type a new name for that folder

Note this has just created a library folder - not a storage folder - we do that in a minute

make sure you have selected that new folder (it will be completely empty) before moving on to your step 1 ( so that will become 2)

follow the rest of your procedure down to current step 8 (new 9)

the first bit "Scroll and select the desired folder in the Browse For Folder pop up, or Make New Folder " is fine

- delete "> + to add, and name, a new folder" - keep the OK

When you select make new folder - the folder will appear in the little window with the words 'new folder' highlighted in blue - type a name - this is the storage folder and conveniently you will give it the same name as the library folder - but not necessarily - sometimes storage folders and projects mat have different names - for instance if you did one video shoot but make a number of different projects from it

Step 9 (new 10) is fine - but I and many others prefer not to put everything in the timeline - instead put every thing in the library and then drag each clip down into the timeline in the order you want while editing - this is a personal preference and you might want to do a bit of editing to see the option you prefer - so I would uncheck the 'insert to timeline' as well as making sure the capture to library option was showing the name of my new library folder - use tiny black arrow on right to access changes.

If when inserting files to the timeline you get the message about changing properties say YES - that is what you want - project properties should always match the video properties when possible.

you commented in a previous post that your computer slowed down for quite a long time while doing this process - yes I am afraid it will - video files by their very nature are quite big and your computer has to copy all of them from your mini disc into the storage folder and copying big files can tie up your computer

once the process is complete you can remove the mini-disc from the PC and since all the videos are now safely stored on your PC you could if you wish format the disc and use it again - but a caution - if the videos on the disc are a "once in a lifetime" event - keep them on the disc until you have completed the project and made your final masterpiece - I also back up all my video storage folders to external drives "just in case"
