Pro X8 on Windows 10 keeps crashing

Post by Professa »

I know alot of folks are having trouble after the recent Windows update but that seems to be limited to Windows 7. I am running Pro X8 on Windows 10 and getting some nagging but inconsistent crashing. Last night I was able to work on my project for an hour before it crashed, today it goes down within a few minutes of being open. I'm not sure what's causing it, though it's always on playback. Does anyone now if the hotfix that someone has linked in the other posts also works for Win10?

Sorry if this considered a repeat post but I've looked through the others and the others seem to be Win7.

Well one user has reported that the X8 hotfix cured *some* of his Videostudio problems on Windows 10 - so perhaps it is worth a try

have you also installed all the previous service packs and hotfixes

find them and the latest hotfix here - - - http://www.videostudiopro.com/en/suppor ... sion-tab=1

Not long after I posted this a month ago, my problem simply disappeared. Today and yesterday it has returned with a fervor...
I did apply that hotfix and I actually thought it had solved my problem as it gave me an extra few minutes of work time but then returned to its familiar crash message. Is anyone else having Win10, X8 issues?

Hi Professa

Although Windows Updates have caused havoc, it may be the content of your projects that’s giving problems.

Can you give details of crash messages? If any.

Details of your project content……….
1 / What type of files are you using ?
2 / Right click a video on the timeline and choose properties, what are they
You can take a snapshot of that panel, create a Jpeg image to attach to your post.
3 / Where did you get the video, Camcorder, Mobile phone etc.
4 / What are your Project Properties, are you able to match the project properties to use the video files properties?
5 / Have you installed QuickTime latest version.

Hi Professa

Can you confirm you have installed the 64 bit version of the program and not the 32 bit version.

I ask as when I use the 32 bit it crashes at regular intervals

Yup, mine is 64 bit. And in answer to lata's comment, I doubt it is content-related as I have been using the same file setups for our monthly segment for a couple yrs and it now crashes without even opening a file. But I record on a Galaxy s3, which obviously creates MP4's. And yes, I believe my Quicktime is up to date.

The version number in the crash report (18.4.0.27) seems to indicate that you have not upgraded (free) to X8.5. The latter's version, fully patched, should be 18.6.0.6... Try that and see if it fixes anything. Corel issued that upgrade they said, to ensure X8 was fully compliant with Win 10.

I recently upgraded from X8 to X9 (Windows 10 64-bit) and I am experiencing very similar crash-related behavior. Nothing specific seems to be setting it off, and sometimes I can work for hours while other times it crashes every ten minutes. Doesn't seem to be related to any particular effect, tool, file format, or anything. The newest issue as of this evening is - all of a sudden - video renders with glitchy/skippy audio. Visually it's fine, but the audio is choppy and all over the place. Playback within the project timeline, and in my original source video files is fine. I'm ready to get different software.

Ken, I was so excited that you had located a simple error on my part but I think not. I have no idea why my crash report would say that version - when I go into the program (for the moment or two before it crashes) it tells me it's version 18.6.0.6. I've attached a screenshot. But the crash report definitely says 18.4.0.27 - what would cause this discrepancy?

Ken, I think you've located my problem, though I'm not sure how to fix it. I downloaded and attempted to re-apply SP3 and I got this message:
"The installed version of the application could not be determined. This setup will now terminate." How do I go about a re-install of the program?

That message is Corel's strange way of telling you that in fact you have SP3 already installed -- and with that version number (18.6.0.6) you clearly have, though I can't account for why it gives that other number in the crash report.

If you do uninstall, just do it the normal way from Control Panel > Programs and Features. You may, however, want to use an uninstaller program like Revo Uninstaller to get rid of any traces left over. You should also IMHO uninstall your personal settings -- the uninstall process asks you whether it should do that.

If you still have your original download files for X8, then I would probably also remove the setup files which were stored in C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel Video Studio X8 Ultimate Setup Files as well and start from fresh.

Apart from that, I have no real idea why you are having these problems. I have X8.5 and now X9 64 bit fully patched versions running successfully on Win 10, which is also fully up to date. And I simply don't get any crashes with either.

Did reinstalling X8 fix the problem in Windows 10? Mine isn't crashing but it's VERY slow when switching from the Effects (filter) panel to the Media panel, or dragging any media to the timeline.
