No news about any other versions yet

The hotfix got me back on right away (whew!) and they wanted me to install Service Pack 3, which I did. Is this part of the fix?

Hi Brumble Buffin

Gets a little confusing with all these patches floating about

SP3 was released at the end of November 2015 so no not related to this latest windows episode.

From my tests the windows updates has not only stopped VS from running but has effected its functions, in particular using SWF files, some of which are used in instant projects.
I also feel there may be other issues. Different operating systems may show different problems

The Hotfix 2 does indeed allow the program to run but does not cure other issues.

Uninstalling the Windows Updates does seem to allow the program to work again.

However there were problems with the program before the windows update, and hopefully will be fixed, eventually.

Really its just a mess.

It truly is an unbelievable mess..almost beyond comprehension that a "windows update" could have caused such havoc! Doe anyone know if you do upgrade to windows 10 -- does that mean all previous versions will work? Or just 8 and 9?
Thinking of leaving my windows 7 pc as is and buying a new one. (Have been needing a new one for a while) Can leave x7 fully operational on the old machine and run X9 on the new?

Hi Ilene

To be honest I would wait a while to upgrade to X9 till these problems are sorted.

Some recent reports of Windows 10 updates are also affecting Video Studio.

Although I applied X8 Hot Fix, I also uninstalled and Hide those two updates and things appear ok ish...

and if you are purchasing a new pc with W10 you can always try X7, I know Ken has X7 and Windows 10 running with no problems.

On another computer running Win 10 Pro, I also have VS X6 and X7 which both run fine... On yet another computer -- originally my main editing computer -- which is also running Win 10, I have earlier versions which all opened, though I confess I did not editing with them, so cannot really comment on their full performance.

But the bottom line is that X7 will certainly run OK under Win 10.

Hi

I had the same problem with the VSX7 and even a long consultation with Corel ( over 20 mails) the situation could not be solved.
The alternative offer for upgrade for VSX8 was not acceptable as the VSX8 was working but I could not import my earlier VSX7 projects and also the import of VSX7 templates were not compatible (the VSX8 crashed when I tried to import the old templates). Ie the VSX8 is not an option fir VSX7 users.
For that reason ( thanks the forum :) ) I uninstalled the 3 W7 updates (and dissabled the new ones) and my VSX7 is working again.
Thanks the forum!

Hi

Glad you have X7 working again, regarding X8 is that the trial version, if so you cannot use other VSP’s only ones created by X8 trial.
I would imagine the situation is the same for X9 trial

I only had to uninstall two Windows Updates not three.?

Hi Trevor

Where is the guarantee that the full version of the VSX8 can import the vSX7 projects when the trial version cannot do it. From Corel I did not get any answer for this question.

How can we test it?

Regarding the W7 updates, i just wanted to be sure and uninstalled all three updates. My VSX7 was working perfect in the last 2 years and do not see any reason for any updates which degrades something on my computer.
Interestingly another 3-4 video programs I am using time to time for editing:

goPro editor
Prodrenalin
Power Director
Magix video studio and music maker
Corel Draw and Paint

had absolutely no problem with the W7 update.

Hi

I have never had any problems in opening older project in the latest program.
Yes if you go back a lot of years there may be some issues but the vsp should open.
One issue was using timelapse but that seems to be fixed.
Also all versions of video studio can save the projects as backward (2 versions) compatible so X8 projects can be opened in X6
Having said that Smart Sound has been removed from X8 so some earlier projects will open with a warning regarding Smart Sounsd

The trial version of X8 was the first to be limited in its functions, limited use of HD and no burner module. Project Properties can only use AVI settings, so any other projects cannot be opened.

Windows Updates is just another problem and a headache for Corel.

Hi Trevor

That is correct, I am using VS since Version 4 (Ulead) and it was always compatible. Now I received the VSX8 direct from Corel to test what is the problem. i installed and to my suprise I could not open my running project from VSX7 it imported a single clip and stopped. What could I tell Corel? Accept their offer for upgrade if it is not working?.
I hate such business ideas, special for customers like me who spent already lot of money for VS (at least 10 upgrades , always the most expensive packages).
I do not mind if I cannot render in test version, but how can I evaluate something what is not supporting my existing project?. (I have 3-4 films in working order, one of them with over 300 cuts and many graphics and special effects. I could not risk an update....)

I have the same problem. I was running VS X7 just fine one day. The very next day it would not open. Apparently Microsoft pushed through some Windows updates overnight and that is the only thing I can think of that would cause my VS X7 to not open. . . .

Absolutely correct OikoEco - if you read the preceding posts in this topic you will see that we identify the TWO rogue updates - tell you how to remove them - and what to do to stop them installing themselves again

You guys(/gals?) are the greatest of the greatest! The light in the middle of the night!
I use VSX7 sparely, like once a month, and when it crashed two days ago I didn't know who the culprit might have been. Last July I stupidly pushed to make my way to get Windows 10 fast, fast, to finally have to uninstall it 3 weeks later. On two desktops, for two different set of problems. In this machine, even if the restore of Win7 worked, it left me with corrupted Task Scheduler files, included the automatic schedule of restore points, which I repaired quite recently. So, in short, when the VSX7 debacle hit me, I had no restore points earlier than Feb 15, all the way to July 2015.
Like others in this conversation, I tried everything I could, reinstalled VSX7 (a version in disk first, and a more recent download I had applied later), I updated/changed versions of Quick Time, uninstalled and hided a couple of recent Windows updates (not the culprit ones...) and I even recover the system to my latest restore point by mid-February. I also found that Win10 had succeeded in download itself again, behind my back; so I hide it again! At which point I cursed all the software manufacturers in general, for good measure... To no avail.
I was beginning to despair, when I read this blog and I had to register, just to say THANKS! As I only discovered the problem 2 days ago, I wouldn't ever known which of the W-Updates caused the problem. And reverting to the Win7 image that Win10 left behind was truly unpalatable.
THANKS, THANKS, THANKS, THANKS... Again.
