...and one month later, same again...

KB3140410 breaks X6

Brought to you by a Nadella and Nichols production. If off to see the sequel "Lightworks on Linux".

X6 is no longer supported by Corel

as far as we here are concerned the answer is to un-install that update and prevent it installing again

Corels response is to a) upgrade to a later version of Videostudio or b) take the free upgrade to Windows 10

I understand that X6 is no longer supported and until two weeks ago neither was X7! X6 is only three years old and X7 is only two years old. I wouldn’t exactly say that they were ancient. Additionally, there appear to be a lot of other issues that haven’t been fixed properly by the patches that are appearing on the boards for X7 and X8, which brings into question whether it is worthwhile patching if they don’t function exactly the same way as they did before.

Does anyone know if KB3140410 has broken your latest patches for X7 and X8? If it has, are you going to patch the patch? You can see how silly this is starting to become.

In order that X6 works in Windows 10 it strongly implies that Microsoft hasn’t applied the same security updates to Windows 10…. YET. Otherwise how would it launch normally given the fact that these updates change the core way in which Windows functions and in turn breaks Corel Videostudio? Clearly Microsoft doesn’t want bad publicity with Windows 10, but hey, what the heck with Windows 7!

If I upgraded to Windows 10, how long would it work before they release the same patches for Windows 10 and X6 breaks again? It seems the only answer is to upgrade to X9! At least X9 has been released now - the previous Windows updates broke Videostudio and X9 wasn’t even released.

If it wasn’t for this forum you wouldn’t even know that there was a problem as Corel’s website didn’t even acknowledge the issue until several weeks later. Mean time your customers are supposed to become forensic experts at troubleshooting these issues and somehow find another way to work! Unfortunately, the real world doesn’t work that way - I don’t get paid if I can’t work.

I also note that you have to buy Blu-Ray support as an added extra with X9. X6 already has that function. Surprise, surprise there is an additional hidden cost after the upgrade.

If you were me, would you stay with Corel’s Videostudio? You’re not exactly giving me a lot of confidence to stay.

Reference all your mentions of 'YOU' and the final question

We are not Corel - we are all users getting together to try and help people like you the best we can - we have no control over Corels support policies - none of us here work for Corel or receive any payment from them for the time we all spend on this forum helping people with problems - so your references to 'YOU' are pointless - if you means Corel

You can contact Corel support via their facebook page or raise a ticket on their website

and if we were you then YES we will and HAVE stayed with Videostudio - many of us started more than 10 years ago with Videostudio and are still with it - so we would stay with it

Corel could have supplied the bluray burner with X8 and X9 as they did in previous versions and just add the $10 os so to the price - and you would be happy ?

less and less of us are burning blu-rays - preferring instead to burn our masterpieces to a usb stick and plug that direct into our TV's so why should we pay for something we don't want.

Yes Videostudio has some problems - I am not denying that - but so has just about every other piece of software - most of us just learn to live with it and work around the problems

Brian, I think that YOU're being overly sensitive as the OP raised important concerns and not in a way the accused people running this forum of anything - a misplaced 'you' not withstanding.

There is no good reason for all versions of VideoStudio to have died because of a Windows security update that didn't affect far older software. Some user surprise and frustration is to be expected. Furthermore Corel's response to the problem that their coding has created has been abysmal.

Not sensitive at all - so definitely not over-sensitive. It seemed to me that arobertson1 thought that he was talking direct to Corel here and that when he said you he was meaning Corel - I just felt it was important to make it clear that this is not an official Corel contact point and comments directed at Corel will not be seen by any official Corel representative

Hi Guys

For what its worth I think either Corel or Microsoft should fix the problems caused by the Windows Updates, totally irresponsible of them to cause the program to fail.

Corel of course are not gonna support older programs with updates that is clear and not changed in many a year, but for me the total failure of the program is a different matter.

Corel for their part have provided X9 as an upgrade eligible for all older versions, in the past only the last two versions qualified, so I guess that’s something.

A little but more detail regarding the Windows Update and Video Studio versions here.

There’s not a lot we can do guys.

It seems like Corel has used a bug that they created to move users to a software subscription model used by company's like Adobe. In Corel's case, you will get one or maybe two years use of your VideoStudio software before it fails completely and totally unexpectedly. Thank goodness that Microsoft hasn't followed Corel's lead otherwise my copy of Office 2007 would have long ago failed.

Pertinent Questions from Win7 x6 usewr:
1. Can we expect this 'failure to load' after every monthly Windows update?

2. Does Corel have access to those updates before the general public? If so, could they test them and let us know which ones are going to cause problems? They have the emails of all users who register so a blast alert mailing should not be a problem.

I realize I have an older version of the product BUT I purchased it only 1 year ago and it suits my limited purposes effectively. It doesn't seem fair that I should be forced to pay a lot of money for a newer version which is apparently loaded with features I do not need. Corel's poor security coding should not be my problem.

I think that this is unknowable but 'arobertson1' has raised the possibility that KB3140410 (issued 8 Mar 16) may have broken the hotfixes for X7 and X8 on Win 7.
deltavee wrote:2. Does Corel have access to those updates before the general public?
I have no insight into Corel but the answer appears to be yes they do, as the issued notes for KB3126587 and KB3126593 included a Known issue warning about breaking Corel VideoStudio X8 and Corel VideoStudio X9 on Windows 7. MS advised users contact to Corel for more information and help, however, Corel took its time to put anything up on its website. Finally Corel issued a hotfix for X8 and two weeks later one for X7. Corel has washed their hands about hotfixes for X6 and X5 as they want you to buy the newest version, i.e. X9.
deltavee wrote:Corel's poor security coding should not be my problem.
I agree but Corel does not. I only hope that Corel coding practices will not break X9 down the road as there is no excuse for that.

What bug has Corel created? It is MS that created the "bug" that broke the Corel program

I will now confirm that one needs to uninstall

KB3140410, KB3126587, and KB3126593

in order to get X5 working.

The list gets longer. Argh.

Seems I'm beating a dead horse.

I too cannot get VideoStudio Pro/Ultimate X5 to run. Last month, after my laptop repeatedly locked up during a Windows update (Preparing to Configure Windows …), trying to system restore to a previous point, etc., I had my drive backed up, wiped and reloaded with Windows 7 Home (the original OS on the laptop). Vendor could not get VS to reload from the backup. After several iterations attempting to install, I downloaded another copy of the install file from Corel (VSX5_Ultimate_PF.EXE). This also did not install (error said I had a previous version already installed). Control Panel / Programs and Features did not list any VS software (I do have an old version of PaintShop installed – it runs). I downloaded a cleanup file from this forum (VSPx5_Cleanup.zip), ran it, and was successful in installing the software (at least it went to completion). Click on Icon, software did not run. Install service packs to no avail (VSProX5_SP1, VSProX5_SP2, VSProX5_SP3). Uninstalled the KB updates 3126587 and 3126593 noted in this thread, hide them as they reappear, reboot. Software still does not run. I can see the vstudio.exe briefly show in task manager as a process. I have uninstalled the software, ran cleanup, reinstalled – nothing. I’ve verified that the KB updates are still hidden and not in the installed list.

What is the next step? (I just read a post from RalphShnelvar ...). I will try this.

You should be able to install CVSX7 Hotfix 1
http://www.videostudiopro.com/en/suppor ... sion-tab=2

Once installed you should be able to re-install those windows updates -- CVSX7 should continue to work

I have not been using X7 to edit of late but it certainly opens and appears ok.
There is no reason why it should not work for you with Hotfix applied.

I don't know of any bad reports regarding the Hot Fix
