It was a real surprise the other day to not being able to open VS X4 on the Win 7 computer. All I got was a swirling little pinwheel for about 6 seconds and then nothing. I went to our laptop and was gratified that the program did open. I had a copy of VS X6 Pro, so uninstalled the VS X4 and installed X6. No start. Same issue as X4. On Friday I wrote to Corel and spent four hours reinstalling Win 7 on another hard drive along with VS X4. It opened! But by this morning, after I'd installed all the updates it wouldn't. And now the laptop, with its new Win7 updates was behaving as a non Video Studio working machine as well.
Finding the forum was a saving grace as it provided the answer of uninstalling the two MS updates. Like many others I've been using Video Studio way back when it was owned by Ulead. My hopes are that Corel will do the right thing and develop patches for it. It would be sad to move onto another movie making program but I would for principle sake do that.
Thanks very much to everyone for sharing their experiences and thanks to the sleuths who found a fix, even if it isn't quite perfect.

I'd like to add my voice to those who are disturbed by the lack of support for VSx7. I purchased the software less than a year ago with the understanding that I would be entitled to two years of download of the installation package. The web site indicates that VSx7 is currently a supported product. I contacted support with the problem before I discovered this forum thread and I got the standard answer. When I asked for additional information regarding the security updates involved in the problem, the line went dead. I made it clear they should provide a fix for supported software or provide me with sufficient information to fix the problem. While I appreciate that forum members have shared a workaround for the issue, I don't accept disabling Windows' security features is a viable solution. It's simple in my mind, either software is supported or it is not.

I use PaintShop Pro and VSx7 as a host for Boris Graffiti. I can tell you if Boris had an issue like this arise, well, it wouldn't be an issue. I also use Lightworks NLE, Blackmagic Design Fusion and DaVinci Resolve. I should probably purchase Boris Graffiti to use as a plugin for Lightworks. I would be assured of proper support for the product.

Corel have indicated to us that they are working on a patch for Videostudio X7 and have promised to let us know as soon as it is available - and will also post the patch on their website

I found this board after doing a search in google for "video studio won't open". Little did I know that it was a problem with a windows update and more than just me was having the problem. No wonder I got the response that Corel was experiencing above average calls. I'm still waiting for a call back and/or an email response (I've been waiting since the 15th). I don't think they're going to call back!!

I followed the instructions of telling windows not to automatically update and then taking off the 2 problematic updates and voila!! my videostudio pro x4 opens again. I know I should upgrade.. and I did but that wouldn't open either... but it opens with the hotfix that someone posted.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I can finish my projects and not start over from scratch!!

Hi. Thanks for the post. I had the same problem. After un-installing the two updates (KB3126587 and KB3126593) my videostudio pro x7 is working again.

When I originally contacted Corel about this problem (My software purchase is less than 2 years old) they advised me to:

1. upgrade to windows 10!!!
2. Purchase the new version x9 !!!

Not exactly helpful. They did mention that a windows update was to blame, but not WHICH updates.

Thanks for solving this problem for me.

So did you download the fix and then update windows? Or vice verse. Wondering what the best order is because as of now, Im running x7, in win 7, fine without those problematic updates.

my events in order:
win 7 pro 64 bit updated with my permission and vsx7 stopped starting (update included all suitable updates available)
uninstall then new install of vsx7 - same problem afterwards of not starting
searched online and found this thread - waited 2 days
downloaded patch and run it and it finished ok
vsx7 then starts up ok without restarting pc

I also successfully installed the Hotfix for VSx7 and the Graffiti update. I did not disable any Windows security updates between the time I discovered the problem and today. All is well. 8)

Brian,

I just saved and ran the Hotfix for ProX8. Then VS had me run a "service pack update for ProX8". I bought ProX8.5 last August. Is ProX8 and ProX8.5 the same thing, except 8.5 has a few more features? The reason I ask, is why did VS then have me run a "service pack update for ProX8" and NOT ProX8.5 right after I did the hotfix? Why does my list of programs on my computer show ProX8 and not ProX8.5? Anyway, the ProX8 (.5?) opened and Under the Help-About tabs it shows I have Corel VS 18.6.0.6. I will now see if the darn thing works.

X8.5 is not really a programme in it's own right - you arrive at X8,5 by applying service pack 2 to X8

so yes Pro X8.5 is just X8 with additions - Corel seem to be not using the 8.5 bit anymore any rate since as your version number shows we are now at X8.6

updates may say they are for X8 or X8.5 since they are the same programme - X8.5 is not a different programme - it is X8 with additions and Corel seem to intermix the numbers at random

but rest assured that your version number shows that you are now fully up to date - and whether users bought X8 or X8.5 - they are all identical after all patches are applied

I received the following email today from Corel advising of the problem and fix. Bit of advertising in there but at least they have told registered users in order to help them.

Dear Valued Customer,

Microsoft's latest security update for Windows 7 has caused serious issues with VideoStudio X8 and VideoStudio X7. We have released updates for VideoStudio X8 and VideoStudio X7 which will resolve the issues caused by this Windows 7 update.

If you've installed Microsoft's Windows 7 security update, then unpatched copies of VideoStudio X8 or lower will not open. So please go here and install the patch:
