Installation Error --- CRC ---

Post by Ron P. »

I've encountered a couple of problems trying to burn a DVD. For this post I'm going to address an error that I have received every time I have tried to install MF4.

The Error is CRC. Which I know is a Cyclic Redundancy Check error. For others that receive this error, more info can be found here:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000430.htm

The error always hits on one file, corporate...(a template file). Stating that it does match the one in the setup.

According to the above website:

Cause:

This error message could be generated by any of the following reasons:

1. During the transmission of the file it became corrupt or bad
2. The file was sent inappropriately
3. The device being opened from is bad or contains errors
4. The file itself is bad or the program attempting to open the file is bad.

File is bad or program attempting to open the file is bad

Solution:
Finally, if the file is being opened from the hard disk drive or other media, it is likely that the file is corrupted or the program opening the file is corrupted.

* Download the file again.
* Reinstall the program being used to open the file
* Attempt to open with a different program
* If the file is on the hard disk drive, run scandisk / defrag
* Assume the file is bad and cannot be recovered

I have d/l the file 3 times, & reinstalled the windows installer a couple of times. I don't know of any other program to use to open it with. I've also ran scandisk and defrag. I've also noticed tihs when installing VS9. The programs will continue to install if I click on "Ignore" when I receive this error. MF4 seems to function correctly with the exception of placing chapter points. See this post: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=5737

Anyone been receiving this same error? If so were you able to correct it with repeated installs?

Anyway I thought others might be interested in exactly what that error was...

Thanks...:)

Is this happening only with ulead products?
It sounds like a harddisk problem and bad sectors.
Even writing to the dvd if the harddisk has bad sectors you will receive
a similar error.

If you open up "My Computer" & select the properties of your
operating system drive (usually C Drive) click on the "Tools" tab
and at the top icon is "Check Now" for error-checking the drive.
If you check ON both the options the 2nd choice checks for defective
sectors.

Before trying that backup important data files and license numbers.
If the drive is defective it may or may not recover.
Run the utility before going to bed because it can take a very long time.
If the drive is defective the system may not recover either.

Also, make sure it's not a virus and cleanup the temp directories
using the windows maintenance accessory.

This only occurs with Ulead products. I have d/l and installed numerous other products..such as: Swishmax, Jasc PSP9, Arcsoft VideoStabilizer, just to name a few, and never receive this error.

I have also ran scandisk and it reports no bad clusters, so this is something either related to Ulead products, their d/l website, or just the mere download process where files go through several "hops" before my machine and gets corrupted. OR something about Ulead's products and Window Installer...

Thanks

In the VideoStudio forum a few people ended up with bad downloads and
similar problems as yours.
I remember reading one post about the windows installer 3.1 or something
like that was causing problems installing or running the ulead products.
I believe they went through "Add/Remove" windows module and removed
that windows installer which fixed their problem.

Hi etch :)

I have on one occassion uninstalled the Windows Installer, to get VS9 to install. However to run the program the Installer has to be on the machine. I tried and it would not run. I then re-installed Windows Installer and the program would run. When removing it, a warning is presented about all the programs that may not function properly once it is uninstalled...

Thanks

That was your post. I do remember others removing that
installer and then VS and other products would work.

I wonder if that installer has some irreversible damage.

The scandisk doesn't check the complete drive. It checks the FAT on the
harddisk (File_Allocation_Table) and other indexing on the drive.
To actually verify the drive you need to perform non-destructive testing
on it which takes quite awhile to do. To scan for defective sectors takes hours.
That's why you must backup data, a power loss could kill the system.
