Clips started to distort all of a sudden...

Post by mgshn »

This started happening yesterday. I have a perfectly fine .MOV file. When I drag it into my VSP X8 edit window and play it, the video runs in (slightly) slow motion and the audio is very choppy.

I checked the speed and time laps settings and they are all set to normal.

I've already tried the obvious stuff like rebooting, pounding on my desk, and checking for updates. (In that order and my software appears to be up to date).

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be welcome.

Perhaps you need to pound on your desk a little harder? Image
I think the problem is likely your pc is not able to smoothly handle that video; too high bit rate? too high res? Post details of that video and details of your pc and perhaps we may be able to verify better.

I don't think it is my PC. I am able to play the clips just fine from the desktop and had no problems until yesterday. I suspect a setting got bumped by accident or something got corrupted.

I am hoping to receive some concrete suggestions before I have to resort to uninstall/reinstall.

In effect you have told us nothing more than that the video is .mov and it worked yesterday but not today. And you expect us to tell you what went wrong. Al is right: we need more information. Where did the video come from? Right click the clip and copy all its Properties here, please, or take a screen grab of the Properties box and upload it here as an Attachment.

Also, what version of Quicktime do you have on your computer, and did you by chance update it between yesterday and today? Have you ticked the box in Preferences > General beside "Show Message when inserting first video clip"? If so, did you get a message asking if you wanted the Project Properties to match those of the clip when you inserted the clip into a new project? If not, what are the Project Properties when you play the clip? And are you playing the clip in Clip or Project mode (the buttons directly under the preview screen)?

Thank you Ken. This is tremendously useful and I will gratefully provide this information (once I get in front of the PC where it's happening).

Ken,

I submitted a response containing all the information you requested and it seems to have gotten lost. Turns out, it doesn't matter.

The answer to my problem was in your final question. The clip was playing in clip mode and when I switched to Project mode it works fine.

There's still the question of why this happens but getting the answer isn't as important for me.

Thaks for your help,

Bob
