If they play in WMP then you must have the codec installed, this means that it is likely that VS cannot use the files produced by your canon camera. YOu may need to convert them to another format for editing.
What camera is it and what file type does it produce. Insert a clip into VS and r/click and choose properties, tell us what it says..

Re: my canon video clips won't pay sound but my sony ones do
LPCM audio is rock standard I think it comes as part of Windows, so should play. But I see it is wrapped in a .mov format... so things might not necessarily be straightforward.
I just asked a number of questions of another user who has also experienced some problems with .mov format video, and I will repeat them here as they may be relevant: what version of Quicktime do you have on your computer, and did you by chance recently update it? (If not, I would suggest updating it to the latest version.)
Have you ticked the box in Preferences > General beside "Show Message when inserting first video clip"? If so, did you get a message asking if you wanted the Project Properties to match those of the clip when you inserted the clip into a new project? If not, what are the Project Properties when you play the clip?

Re: my canon video clips won't pay sound but my sony ones do
I have the same camera and played back video from it with audio in X6U and in X9U.
Quicktime player I have is version 7.7.6
The difference is, I recorded in 1920x1080....
Maybe if the poster can upload a SHORT sample of this video frame rate to the cloud (straight from the camera), I can download and see if it plays back on my computer.

Thanks for the replies.
I will post up a short clip from the camera as soon as I can. The software is installed on a corporate computer while I wait for my new personal computer so my access to it is somewhat limited to after office hours.
