Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
I am trying to follow the tutorial on Star Wars Scrolling Text
as in here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvAmaRJFRnc.
I get as far as item 9 and get then get stuck. After double clicking
on the overlay track 1 and then clicking on the window the text from the scrolling template stays the same and does not show my typed
text. Initially, I used Word 2013, thinking that this was the problem
I pasted the text into Notepad, still no good .So I then typed all the text afresh into Notepad directly, deleted the pasted text from Word
and copied only the newly typed text in Notepad. Still no good.
Help please.
Ken
1 type text in notepad (or word ?)
2 open new project (keep untitled)
3 add image for back ground
4 browse to text-select all (ctrl+a) then r/click to copy
5 click on title “t” and select the( 5th ) scrolling text template
6 open options panel r/click on highlighted template-insert to o/lay track o/lay 1
7 in options panel- change duration to 20 secs
8 then click fit project in timeline window (bot right)
9 double click on o/lay track and paste text from preview window by clicking on window
as in here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvAmaRJFRnc.

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Re step 9: you need to paste the text by first clicking the window to select it, then pressing Ctrl+V to insert the text itself. This assumes that in Step 4 you have actually copied the text to the Clipboard by right clicking and selecting Copy if it appears in the dropdown menu, or else clicking Ctrl+C, which is what I would normally do.

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Perhaps in step 4 I should have written right click and click
Copy.
Anyway I have been through the process again twice and had another look at the tutorial. As far as I can see, she did exactly what I have described above. The point is that 1st clicking on the window to select it then pressing Ctrl+V is not working for me

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Hmmm... that's strange! I just tried it and it worked perfectly. The only thing I had to do which was not mentioned in your list at step 9 was to highlight the existing text in the text box (Lorem ipsum...). Then I pressed Ctrl+V and as expected my own text replaced Lorem ipsum...
Can you confirm whether or not you first highlighted the existing text?

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Yes, as you advised earlier, I did highlight the text in the window 1st.Also tried various combinations of double clicking and right clicking the template, overlay and window but nothing worked.Could I just type the text directly in the window and move it up as I type or would that not work ?

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Hi Kenneth
Did you read the reply to one of your previous posts regarding Star Wars
I provided a VSP using Customise Motion and P-in P text boxes, these should help in understanding the settings used?
I think Customised Motion is probably the easiest to use.

Just viewed the tutorial you show in your first post and it looks very good and should be easy to reproduce.
Hi Kenneth
Copy and Paste, I know you have tried all options but do it again, follow these
1 / First insert the 5th Title to the timeline
2 / Select Title on timeline
3 / Click preview screen will show text (Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet)
4 / Double click text, curser shows in within text
5 / Ctrl A to select all Text shows with white background.
6 / from notepad, Right click for Select All
7 / Right click for Copy
8 / Minimise note pad
9 / back to VS, Text still showing white background
10/ Ctrl + V to paste
For me it took a while to paste the text so be patient

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Hi Trevor,
Thanks for the reply, I had not ignored your info in the other post and tried to download it then had to update win zip and so on.It seem most issues that should be dealt with easily and take little time always works the opposite for way me. Anyway, I have eventually got it into VS and will study it later on today.I cannot see any reason why I am having this problem pasting Word text but I have the problem and do not know how to over come it.It worked in the tutorial as shown, which I have followed but the pasting bit did not work for me.I do remember many moons and VS versions ago, probably in the days of Steve Jones and Black Lab, that you got the Star Wars effect by typing text, may be in an overlay, directly onto the screen.Doing a forum search did not bring anything like this up.But, back to the future, I will pursue modern day ,VSX7 help and hope I can master your downloaded project without numerous problems!

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Hi Kenneth
Copy and Paste options differ depending on which program we are using.
I assumed you were using note pad but now think its Word.
Please use keyboard keys, do not use right click, my version of word does not use Right Click option.
Ctrl + A to select all
Ctrl + C to copy
Ctrl + V to paste
For what its worth the tutorial looks the better option rather than the projects I provided, it seems pretty easy to complete.

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
This is as far as I have got following the tutorial and forum advice. Have some issues though
Item 10 Why did the text background not show in white
Following on from this , how will this affect the chroma key stage,in the tutorial, the colour of the background was black- so do I just use the colour of the background I have to get the same result-that is only the text showing over the image ?
The other thing is, I am wondering if is because I did not wait a while for the text in the screen to change to mine when I was previously following the tutorial workflow that this was my problem. Has any one followed the tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvAmaRJFRnc and had the text change when pasting into the preview window straight away ?
1 type text in notepad
2 open new project (keep untitled)
3 add image for back ground
4 browse to text-select all (ctrl+a) then r/click and click copy
5 click on title “T” and select the( 5th ) scrolling text template
6 open options panel r/click on highlighted template-insert to
o/lay track 1. Title shows in O/lay track 1 already
highlighted--(Lorem ipsum dolor sit amett etc )
7 Click preview screen will show text (Lorem ipsum dolor
sit etc)
8 click on preview screen and lorem text shows in a box
9 Double click text, curser shows in within text
10 Ctrl A to select all Text shows with GREENY background
( 2nd line 3rd colour along in colour picker) even though
white colour was already selected
11 from notepad, Right click for Select All
Right click and Copy
12 In VS with Text still showing white ? background
Ctrl + V to paste
13 notepad text shows after a while
14 align text to the centre of the preview screen
15 double click your own text in the o/lay and -
change its font colour to yellow
16 save project as a vsp file via file save
use a file name of star wars title text
17 click save

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Hi Kenneth
Yes I ran through the tutorial without problems..
part 3 why did you add a background image.
The first part is to create a scrolling text, no background, the timelines should only have the text box.
Save that project as Starwars Text.vsp
Then save again as Starwars Text Effect.vsp
Your background from F6 Preferences should be set to black.

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
I added an image because that was part of the tutorial advice, the idea being as I understand it, is that the text only will scroll over the image after the background colour of the text has been chroma keyed out and the image under it shows.Part of the tutorial advice is to ""select image in library to use as background for this title and it shows in window, stretch image in t/line to match duration of title now it is needed to use chroma key so that b/ground appears behind title."This was beforethe star wars text vsp was saved.
Do I not understand correctly that the colour selected in pref only refers to the back ground colour of all of the screen and not to the background of the text in this context.
In the tutorial that colour box in the options panel was set to black which was the colour that had to be chroma keyed out behind the text so that only the yellow text srcolled over the image.
Having said all that, I noticed in pref that my selected back ground colour was the one that showed in the preview window behind the text even thoughwhite was showing in the colour box, so I am not getting it ?

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Hi Kenneth
As I read it we first have to make a project containing only the text box, scrolling vertically through the screen.
The background is black.
Add only the text to the project.
Save that project as Starwars Text .vsp
Then save again as Starwars Text Effect.vsp
With Starwars Text Effect, vsp open delete the text box, nothing in the timeline.
Right click timeline for Insert Video, find the StarwarsText.vsp, add that to the overlay track.
You are now working with a nested project.
NOW Add your background image to the top track.
Text box will show with black background, use Chroma Key to remove that background.
Resize and Distort top of text box on screen to make narrower.
Position text on screen, anchor center / center.

Re: Problem with Star Wars Tutorial
Trevor has put me on the right lines (again).I got my lines crossed cos in the tutorial the image showed at the start of it.Anyway, I have consolidated the advice, revisited VS and listed the following workflow which worked for me.
1 type text in notepad
2 open new project (keep untitled)
3 change preview screen colour to black in pref via settings. Now
screen is black.
4 browse to text--select all (ctrl+a) then r/click to
copy
5 click on title “t” and select the ( 5th ) scrolling text
title template
6 in options panel- change duration to 20 secs
then click fit project in timeline window (bot right)
7 double click on o/lay track. Then double click on text in
window--the cursor flashes.
8 ctrl a to select all text which shows on a white background in
the preview screen box.
9 from notepad, right click for select all
right click and copy
10 ctrl+v to paste-- note pad text shows
11 align text to the centre of the preview screen
by clicking the centre icon of the alignment box
12 double click o/lay and note pad text shows. Change
the font colour of the proview screen text to yellow
13 save project as a vsp file via file save.name it
Star wars title text
