Making DVD from gopro video with high frame rate

Post by Colleen »

I tried rendering a video file for a DVD and the video is very pixelated. Is there anyway to fix this for a DVD? I have been able to render for bluray without the pixelation after rendering with lower frame rate. Here is the video properties.

There's not all that much you can do. For a DVD, your mpeg-4 has to be down-converted to mpeg-2, which in itself is a lossy process. And I say "down-converted" because the international DVD standard means that the maximum frame rate you can use is 29.97 fps if you are in NTSC territory or 25 fps in PAL. This means that in effect VS has to throw away half of the frames from your 59.94 fps footage. On top of that, you will be going down from the current high def quality 29999 kbps bitrate to a maximum of 8000 kbps, which again is all you do for DVD. All this means considerable loss in quality, and this will be particularly noticeable if your video has a fair bit of action or movement which I imagine will be the case since it is from a GoPro...

Hi Colleen

You may be able to improve things a little but as Ken says down-converting to Mpeg2 will cause quality issues.

When you select Mpeg2 the template probably uses interlacing at 29,97 fps. Upper Field (interlaced)
You may be best to modify the template to use 29.97fps (progressive)

Also make sure Best is set in Resampling Quality – F6 Preferences – edit tab.

Otherwise try using Format Factory to convert the video, you never know that may create better quality, worth a try anyway.
