I am trying to test whether when I add more files to the 7 I have in a folder they will be given numbers like 00(8) etc in order of being pasted. At present there are 5 jpegs and two movie clips in the folder. I have followed the workflow below as before but it is not working as previously. I just see the 1st image with 00 but the following do not get renumbered. The purpose of the folder in Windows is to assemble various files from different sources in date order and then import into a project .At the moment I am reduced to numbering the 2nd image” 2” and so on. If I get the rename issue sorted will further added files show as 00(8) etc or can rename only work after all images have been imported. The problem I will get if images will not be renamed as pasted is that those files with higher numbers but have been taken earlier will not paste in date taken order
1 make new folder with 00 as name
2 paste pics into that folder
3 ctrl+a to select all pics
4 right click on 1st pic
5 select rename
6 rename the 1st pic 00
7 click on the 2nd pic
8 all pics are named 00 (1) 00 (2) etc
rename problem

Re: rename problem
Hi Kenneth
I have just tried that approach of re-naming and it works ok for me.
The name you give the first image is used for all files, try using “files” rather than a number. Then you will have files(0), files(1) etc.
But there is an issue renaming Video and Images and you will still have to list in Date order, so really a pointless exercise unless you use Batch Re-Name
I can understand what you are trying to do but I think you may be best in adding the video to the timeline, then adding images from the library.
You may find re-naming and adding a mix of video and images that some images although in chronological order may be in the wrong position. If you have to move an image it will take longer to do than import manually.
OK
Try adding files to VS without re-naming, simply rearrange folder order by “date”
Ctrl + A to select all
Drag first file (will drag all) to timeline
Otherwise import all files to Library, then rearrange order using AtoZ icon top right, then drag and drop to timeline.

Re: rename problem
I gave up using the Windows Rename function years ago and now use a dedicated programme to renumber files
The problem I found with the Windows Rename is that it starts from 1 again for every format of file you have - so if you are mixing jpegs and avi's you will get something like 00(1).jpg - - 00(1).avi - - 00(2).jpg - - 00(2).avi
it becomes even worse if you also have .bmps and png's etc because you then get something like
00(1).jpg - - 00(1).avi - - 00(1).bmp - - 00(1).png -- 00(2).jpg - - 00(2).avi - - 00(2).bmp - - 00(2).png -- 00(3).jpg - - 00(3).avi - - 00(3).bmp - - 00(3).png ---- etc.
Fine if all your files are the same type - otherwise not good
You may need to look around for a dedicated renaming programme - the one I use is called "Batch Rename" - but it can be very complicated to use - there must be easier ones around

Re: rename problem
I am not at my PC at the mo, but will be soon so I cannot try anything out.But would it work if I only had images in the rename folder and put the videos in the library .I will try to rename images only. Would it work if there were only videos in the rename folder- but then I would need to do the phone and camcorder videos separately. If I add files to VS without renaming, will this have to be done with ALL the files to be in the project or can I do this a bit at a time as I go.

Re: rename problem
I tried renaming again with the 4 images and 2 videos and renamed the 1st image file 00 this did rename all the files , they are now named file 00(1) file00(1) file 00(2) file 00(2) file 00(3) file 00(4) but the original in line order has been changed. What was the 2nd is now the 3rd,what was the 3rd is now the 5th,file 00(4) is now last in line instead of 4th. I deleted the images from the test folder, renamed the 1st image 00and the other files kept in line and were named 00(1) 00(2) etc, so this proved, as Brian said ,having images and videos together stops the rename sequence from working properly. So what is the next best move for me. Will sort by date in VS work on all different file formats in one sweep or will I have sort by each different type first and then sort by date. Once sort by date is completed, if it is done on one go can I just drag into the timeline images and video files in line or will it not be that easy.If images and videos have to be sorted by date separately ,will I be able to drag individual files to where I want in date order in the timeline. Can dragging these files to the timeline be done as I go or have I got to wait for the library to be filled with all the project files first

Re: rename problem
You can put the photos in the timeline at any rate you want - one a minute - one an hour - one a day - you work at the speed you want to there is no need or compulsion to put them all at once
it is not necessary to have any files at all in the library - you can drag and drop direct to the timeline - of RIGHT click on the timeline and choose Insert Video or Insert Photo - your working speed and sequence is entirely up to you
I did a quick test in Videostudio and the A - Z sort seems to put images first then videos so that may not help

Re: rename problem
Hi Kenneth
You do not need to re-name to import to VS in chronological order.
If you add images and video to the same folder, view the folder in Detail view defaults to using Name order, a small triangle shows at the top of the Name column.
Simply click the column text Date and the folder will display in Date order, the triangle now shows in that column.
The order maybe oldest first, click the text Date to arrange in newest first, if that’s the preferred order.
Ctrl + A to select
Drag and drop to Video Studio timeline, dragging the first selected file.
All clips will be in chronological order.
Like Brian I think you are best manually adding clips as you go and building up the project, maybe add the first 10 minutes, edit those then add another 10 minutes.
