X8 Paintbrush doing strange things - Solved

I did some random painting with the paintbrush and as shown in the attachment for a segment of the canvas, the results are weird. Paintbrush is the only tool I used on this background. It was set for size=127 (for the larger strokes), hardness=64, step=10, density=100 and opacity=100. In Brush variance all is normal and jitter=0. My system is set for size = 125%. I reset the program recently because the recently used colours were not showing up and I have SP1. I noticed this before resetting. X7 paints as expected.

Has anyone else seen something like this?

I'm embarased to say that I missed the fact that Color Blend setting was normal but the "jitter %" was set at 7. Position jitter (at the bottom) was 0%. Shows one needs to read the fine print. So here it is to demonstrate the sort of errors it is possible to make and blame the program.

Another good reason to reset tools at the start of each session, or at least when you experience problems.

I do get this periodically, not just with the paint brush but other tools like the eraser!

I do agree, resetting tools prior to using maybe an extra step but worth it. If you don't know how to reset a tool, click on Presets where there is a curved arrow ... this is the Default Reset button.
