Tagging people and geotagging

Post by Chrisah »

Hi!
I'm using Corel PhotoPaint X8. I'm a new user of the program and I want to tagg my friends in my pictures. It's not possible because the tagg option is greyed, both in the information screen where I can find the exif data and at the bottom of the screen.
The same problem i have with geotagging. When I want to geotagg a picture its not possible - its also grey. Normaly I use GeoTagger to tagg geotaggs but I find it more confortable to tagg this pictures with PhotoPaint. Does anybody knows a solution for my "problems"?
Thx for help!

Hi, I have Paint shop Pro X7. I had the same problem. I was in the Thumbnail Mode but switched to the Preview Mode. I selected the People tag and a Manual: box with a Tag Person appeared below. I doubled clicked on it and a box appeared in the picture with a message Who is this ? this box is movable on the picture. Double click on the text "Who is this" and a box appears. Type a name in at the top and click Add New Person and click save. See if this works it might be a little different in X8.

I spoke too soon. I was able to apply face tags, but it didn't seem I was actually able to store the face tag data in the file and I wasn't able to read face tag data that had been applied with Microsoft Photo Gallery. I did find a post that said that I needed to change a setting so that storing xml tags in the file was enabled, but I never found the place to make that change.

Why haven't people just opened the Help file and, in the Search tab, typed in the word tagging? They'll find various options for face recognition and tagging.

Thanks JoeB. I'll try again, but I watched a video, read the manual on this a few times, and did various experiments to try to get face tagging to work. It does work in the sense that I can tag a face and as long as I don't close Paintshop Pro the face will remain tagged. Alas it doesn't seem that the file is updated with a tag because the tag doesn't remain after Paintshop Pro is closed and opened. Also Paintshop Pro didn't seem to be able to read face tags inserted into an image by Microsoft Photo Gallery. My guess is that I could tag a face in an image and upload that image to Facebook and Facebook would recognize the tag. I haven't tried that. Right now, it seems it isn't saving its own face tags to the image file and it can't read face tags inserted into a file by Microsoft Photo Gallery. It does correctly read non-face tags inserted into an image by Microsoft Photo Gallery. There seems to be a setting some place that needs to be updated to enable inserting face tags into a file but I haven't found out where it is. I don't understand why it can't read Microsoft Photo Gallery face tags unless possibly Microsoft Photo Gallery face tags are not compatible with Paintshop Pro.

ETA: Face tagging in Paintshop Pro is now working for me in the sense that the face tag data does seem to be getting saved in the image file. Apparently I needed to try harder. I don't know what I was doing wrong before because it just worked this time. However it appears that face tagging in Paintshop pro is not compatible with Microsoft Photo Gallery face tagging.

ETA2: Paintshop Pro is not installing face tagging data into image file. Even though the face tagging data is still there after Paintshop Pro is opened and closed the file itself has not been updated. Apparently Paintshop Pro is maintaining a face tag database outside the image files. Maybe this is the way it is supposed to work? Maybe there is a setting some place to force it store the face tagging data in the file?

Face tags are not saved in the image file (lots of other information from PSP and tags is saved there) but are saved in ImageDB.db in C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\19.0\Database. You can check what is in the file using an EXIF reading/editing program.

I have a related question, and I haven't found an answer to this in the help files or the manual.

As there is no way of preserving the face recognition tags within the file itself, is it possible once you've recognized everyone in the photo, to have the facial recognition tags automatically be added to the standard tags for the photo? Hovering over the faces won't work in other applications, or in PSP on another computer, but at least you could have a searchable tag that way. True, you can manually add them, but it would be nice to have it be an automatic process to save steps and time.

Part 2: As I use PSP on two different computers, it appears that if I copy the appropriate image database file from the one I'm currently doing face recognition on to the other one, then the face recognition should be correct on the other? All of my photos are on a shared NAS RAID.

I'm trying to help a French user who has a problem with the face recognition.
He had PSP X9 on one computer with face tagging on this computer.
Now, he has another computer and installed X9 on this new computer.
He copied the database on the new computer. He recovered all the infos (locations, IPTC, etc.) but the names tags created by People on the first computer had disappeared. Where are they stored?

Jean-Luc:
Is your friend looking for the face information in Manage under Collections? Face recognition shows up in the Navigation panel only when Collections is selected.
