Windv

Post by NOKNOT »

Downloading some Avi files from camcorder to use in Videostudio and thought I would see if Windv works with windows 10. Im not sure if I should have type-1 avi or type-2 avi checked. Also in windows 10 I cannot seem to choose the folder I want to transfer to. I am trying to transfer to a sub folder I created in my external drive but it will not allow me to choose it. Thanks.

Hi

A while since I transferred DV-Avi files.

I always used Type-1, but would assume you will get what the camera recorded as the process transfers the data (dv-avi) without recoding.

I don’t know why you cannot select the external drive. I don’t have Windows 10 to test that.
DV-Avi is approx. 13 Gb per hour, if the external drive using Fat32 then the files size would be limited to 4 Gb, if so maybe Win DV only transfers to NTFS, just a thought????

I saw this post yesterday, but since I did not have WinDV on this computer, I had been hoping someone else might be able to reply. It has been quite a few years since I have used DV/AVI (though I still have two camcorders that record in it, plus my HDV one.) But I have now downloaded it, and can state that it seems to work well in my Windows 10 x64. That sort of surprised me in a way, since the "current" version of WinDV dates from 2003. However, it is a simple program, as we know, and perhaps that is what makes it still a viable one with the latest OS...

Anyway, to the specifics, it doesn't really matter whether you set it to Type 1 or 2. Video Studio used to be able to deal with both types, though IIRC it sometimes gave difficulties to some users when Type 2 was selected. (On the other hand, I recall well that my now rather ancient Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 used to definitely prefer Type 2... As you may be aware, Type 1 captures video and audio as a single stream, while Type 2 captures them as separate streams, though within one single file.)

As for selecting where to store the captured files, when I click on the "..." button to the right of the "Capt. file:" window in WinDV I have no trouble navigating to, and selecting, folders on either the hard drive or an external USB drive.
