moving files when upgrading to x8

Post by steverd »

I have been using x7 for several years and have quite a few files in My Documents x7 files also several files in the plugins for both 64 and 32 bit programs. My question is what is best way to transfer the files to x8. The files in the plugin folder I can copy and move. The other files 1. Should I leave in the existing location use the Preference/File Location and point to the old file system or 2. Copy the files to the new folders created by x8? Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for any help.

I'm a bit confused. I also have Windows 8.1 and I don't have a My Documents folder. Are you saying you either did have a My Documents folder that was created with the installation of your 8.1 operating system or that you created such a folder yourself? On what drive does it exist.

The reason I ask is because I'm trying to determine if the files you're speaking about (and by "files" I am assuming you mean the various resources like scripts, brushes, patterns, etc)) are those that were installed with your installation of X7, or are ones that you either created yourself or obtained from third party sources, or some combination of both.

I have a Documents folder on the root of the system, and in that folder are folders for X7 and X8. These contain sub folders with the names of various resources. However, that is not where the actual resources that were installed with the programs are located. Most are actually located in C:\ProgramData\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X8\Corel_01, etc., with a few named ones (Scripts, etc.) in the X7 and X8 installation sub folders.

And, not least, because you mention the possibility of pointing X8 to some of the X7 resources, I am going to a assume that you also intend to keep X7 installed (which is a good idea anyway)

So the basic info I can provide with my lack of detail is this. Any resources installed by your initial install of X7 will also have been installed in default sub folders by your X8 install, so there is no reason to move them from X7 or point X8 to them.

However, any resources you created yourself or obtained from third party sources, IF they are in their own folders separate from the default installed resources, can either have those folders copied and then pasted into the resources locations of X8, or you can simply point X8 to their X7 location. If, however, they are mixed in with default resources, then pointing X8 to those X7 folders will result in the default installed resources being duplicated. It won't cause issues but crowds the list of resources.

Plugins, however, are a different story. Some 8bf plugins can be moved but many plugins have an install routine that leaves path/locaton info in the registry and sometimes to separate folders in Program Files (or Program X86 Files) and cannot just be moved. The best bet with plugins is to point X8 to the same locations that you have X7 pointed to.

When you install X8, as you know it will create a new set of folders: PaintShop Pro / 18 /........ these will be empty. Go to File Locations from File, and direct the programme to the X7 folders/files.
OR....
Here's a simple trick create a new folder (preferably on another drive) and name it PaintShopPro Custom Folders. Copy/paste ALL your X7 folders into this folder, ie: brushes, scripts etc. You will need to do File, Preferences, File Locations. The files aren't now necessarily any version files. Just point PSP to this particular folder. Each time you update all you need to do is file locations.
PSP will continue to have X7 and X8 folders by default but they'll be empty.
Corel PSP developers have been asked numerous times to allow the user to determine the location for custom folders upon installation of the programme ...........we are still waiting!

Thanks to JoeB and Trueblue. JoeB I did not make myself very clear but appreciate the help. Trueblue response solved my problem, copy the x7 folders to a new location and point the x8 to these file then I can remove x7. Only need to copy plugin files form x7 to x8 for both 32 and 64 bit versions.

That depends on what plugins you have, as I stated earlier. Some plugins will not be workable if moved from the location in which they were originally installed. In other words, some plugins install with routines similar to more comprehensive programs, like PSP, MSWord, etc. You can't just take those two latter programs and simply copy them to another location and expect them to work. But if you don't have such plugins then it shouldn't be an issue.

JoeB, transferred all plugins with copy and paste and all worked fine. I am aware of problems with copy and paste, but had the original sites for reinstall if necessary.
