Output lighter than original clip

I'm a novice to video editing. I made one project in VS8 from an input .mov file, and it looked fine. I started a second project from another .mov file from the same source, but even before I create output, the project playback is much lighter than the clip playback. I think I have everything still at default values, and have no filters applied. Any help and ideas are very much appreciated.
