Menu and toolbar icons too small

Post by Videostudio newbie »

Hello,

New user here hoping to get some advice on how to get VideoStudio to display the menu and the toolbar icons correctly on a high resolution monitor like the Surface Book. Everything is so tiny that it is virtually impossible to use the application. Any ideas?

Thanks,
canuck

What resolution are you running the Surface book at?

It is at its default value of 3000 by 2000, but I don't think it matters that much since I am having the same issue with lower resolutions.

Interesting,
When I look here https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us ... ersatility
the product shots show tiny icons/menu also so it may be a feature :? .
Can you shoot your VS screen with a camera so we can see the problem?

As for correction... well I don't think it's possible, the icons are not vectors but set size, but menu fonts might be set by the OS, have you tried?

** OK, you have a valid point here, I just resized the fonts in win7 and I can see that only very few things resized in VS.
It's defiantly need to be address by Corel, as larger screens are not that expensive as they where 3 years ago when X7 rolled out.

This whole high resolution would have been ok if software and hardware companies made sure that people had the option to revert to lesser resolutions without affecting the screen functionality. Right now if I select a lower resolution, the entire screen shrinks to leave me very little workspace (I need the full screen area when I work).

I was not able to upload a screenshot larger than 950 pix, so the attached image does not reflect the actual menu and icon size in VD.

Some companies wrote their software (gui) to be resolution independent, and for the other ones, they should offer a fix for this vexing issue.

I thought that 8.5 being the latest version would have addressed this issue, but clearly it didn't. Plus I could not find a way to contact support directly to find out what their official answer is.

VS doesn't automatically set the size of your gallery icons with respect to your machine screen resolution - I assume those are the icons you refer to, since they are most prominent in your screen shot. But you can change the size of those icons to suit your taste, manually.

See this screen shot of the user workspace, with a slider bar at the top RH side of the gallery pane --> red arrow and circle in the pic.
VS X8 gallery icon size.jpg
Slide that bar to the right, the gallery icons get bigger. Slide to the left, icons get smaller. Set the slider to the point you like the size to be.

newbie is not talking about the library thumbnails but the menu and toolbar icons.

Look at the title bar of his image: the words Capture Edit Share are truncated

Hi
in addition the vertical icons to the right of the preview screen take up a small portion, where your image shows the icons full length of the screen, much larger icons

Yes I would imagine this is a real problem.

I did my tests and found that correcting this will need a complete menus/icons redo.
... correcting that will affect all other users who use average pixel density screens.

Thanks DavidK for your response; I was already aware of the slider you were referring to. Canuck is correct by mentioning the program menu and toolbar icons.

Lata,
You are absolutely right by saying that it is a real problem. They look so small on my screen that it is virtually impossible to use the program. I haven't contacted them, but will do it later, and see what they say.

Asik1,
I would imagine that they would have to redo/add/ or modify the gui code to make it work on HR monitors. I hope you would agree that Corel should have stated in their System Requirements that VS doesn't support HR monitors.

There have been issues in past versions, whereby parts of the "workspace" itself had to be adjusted so it all fitted onto the available screen at the resolution it provides. In one particular case, some tracks of the timeline were 'below' to screen bottom without any scroll bar on a laptop, whereas no similar problem with desktop monitor with larger screen. And the size/resolution of the screen obviously varies, one machine to another. The case I cite was fixed readily, so that the whole workspace or parts thereof - as you highlight - should be easily adapted to automatically cope with screen resolutions like yours. The details for that are buried in the windows configuration data when the windows package is installed, or when you change (see Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Screen Resolution on your system) to suit the screen in use. In this case, it may simply be that your screen resolution is higher than the current limit the VS program (at least in the part you reference - clearly, it works OK for the gallery items already) is coded for.

Regarding the HR monitor item asik mentions - one would think that if - as it does - VS supports HiRes 4K editing on video clips, it would work with similar monitors easily.

Get your support request in quick - Corel warranty is only 30days . . . .

Hi Davidk,

As you said I am afraid that VS has a limitation in displaying menu and toolbar icons on HiDPi screens, which the surface book is equipped with.
I have contacted Corel and I am waiting to see if they have a solution to this problem.

I have found a fix for this since I had the same problem with my new laptop Dell XPS 13 with a very high res display. Visit this webpage for the solution.

http://www.danantonielli.com/adobe-app- ... plays-fix/

The fix is complicated and you must be handy with the Register. I have done this fix for several of my programs that had the problem.

Hi Al

That looks pretty good to me, no reason why it should not work for Video Studio.
I am sure Corel can create a hot fix for those who do not want to edit the registry.

Aljimenez,

I was aware of that site, but it looks like some people were still having problems implementing that fix. I am not ready at the moment to mess with the registry settings on the MS SB, and last thing I need now is to mess up the computer ( I am currently in the middle of a time consuming project ). It's a shame that one guy can provide a fix for a software that a giant company refuses or cannot (either way) do.

When you said you've done that to several of your programs; did it include After-Effects?

Lata,

It does look good, but I am still reluctant at the moment to take that jump (which may void the warranty). I totally, agree that Adobe, Corel and any other software company could/should create a hot fix to fix this problem.
