VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
I have a clip approximately 1hour duration, with 20 chapter points. If I delete a portion of that clip, say 5min, the Chapter Points following that deletion remain at the same time stamp. i.e., they do not follow their respective frames and are now 5min off. Is there a way to correct this so that the time stamps are automatically adjusted/synchronized with the clip?
BTW: I've tried locking the work space for ripple editing to no avail.

Hi
Chapter points are attached / marked / synchronised to the Timecode of the project not the video file.
You should complete your edits before adding chapter points.
Later versions of video studio do retain the chapter points names as set in the timeline when accessing the burner module.
Not sure if X6 retains all details, so you may be best to add chapter points after Share Create Disc, that is in the burner module.

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Thank you Trevor, I was kinda hoping there was some 'magic' to force the Chapter Points to follow the clip vs the timeline .... heavy sigh,
anyway, your comment
"Later versions of video studio do retain the chapter points names as set in the timeline when accessing the burner module."
is of some comfort as it really is a bit of a pain to to have to repeat the chptr-pt naming process again in the burn module. I have ordered X8 and so will be looking forward to that feature as well as the increased support for HD.
BTW: instead of waiting to put the chptr-pts in at 'burn module time', I like to put them in whilst editing, create a new project for burning, and then in the burn module simply add the .vsps that I want to the time line. That way I can easily combine multiple editing sessions.
Thanks again,

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hi Allen
Ok I had a little time to check out X6
Chapters named from the timelines “chapter manager” are Not carried over to the burner module.
Names have to be added to the chapter menu.
When you close the burner module you return to the timelines, empty timelines, now save the project (File Save As) and your menu details / chapter names will be retained.
When you open that project, again an empty timeline but Share Create Disc DVD the chapter names will be intact.
As an aside
If you set the project properties to match dvd settings, then Share Create Disc..the burner module should use those by default when rendering the VSP’s

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Thanks for the pointers Trevor,
It seems to me that X6 is not really codec friendly when it comes to setting project properties for HD clips (i.e., AVC1280x720p types). I understand that X8 is better oriented to handle the newer formats and that should enable me to implement your suggestions.

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hi Allen
If you are burning DVD Discs then you have to use Mpeg2 DVD compliant files.
Go to Settings Project Properties – Edit file Format as Mpeg files.
Those are the typical properties needed to burn a DVD Disc
You can choose Edit to modify the default settings, but all options are DVD compliant.
For Pal DVD typically…….
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
But yes X8 copes with many more HD formats for Project Properties

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hi Trevor,
Once again thanks. Many times I wish to make an AVCHD Disc; however, I don't seem to be able to set the Project Properties to anything close to those requirements.
Recently had an interesting "exposure" (pardon the photographic pun) to an additional anomaly of X6. While editing an H.264 Baseline 1280x720p file, I tried to append a solid color, text to the color, and transition to both, all of which seemed to have worked in the EDIT timeline. But, when I got into the burn module, it became apparent that the entire clip had been 'clipped' to 720x480. i.e., parts on all sides had been removed!?! Went back and repeated the process in a different sequence and all was fine!?
I'm assuming that this was a function of the project properties limitations of X6 and look forward to learning X8.

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
I feel the need to chip in here just to make the comment that you appear to be placing too much importance on Project Properties, especially with X6. They are really only important in a couple of situations. The first and most obvious is where you want simply to go to Share > Same as Project Properties. That is much more useful now that X8 can match Project Properties to high definition video inserted in the timeline, but as you have found this is rather limited with X6. In other words, with X6 it is usually more important to set the correct output properties than the Project Properties.
And yes, I think you are correct in your assessment of the anomaly you mentioned. Most likely you either inserted the title first, with it having the standard def settings, and the Project Properties matched these. Then you would have selected Same as Project Properties to get the result you did. Or else you selected Same as First Clip and the same thing happened.

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hi Allen
All posts by me assumed you were working standard definition video with and burning DVD.
Can you confirm what type of discs you are burning?
If using Avchd 1280 x 720, I would render the project to a Mpeg2 video file, using that file in the burner module rather than the VSP.
In fact it may be best to render all VSP’s to Mpeg2, using video files to burn to disc.
That may of course affect the way chapter points are retained, I believe they are embedded to the video files and can be found by scanning for Create Chapter points in the burner module.
1280 x 720 is 16 : 9, assuming the project properties are using 16:9 then there should be no problems with aspect ratio.

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hi Ken,
I don't believe I selected the 'same as first clip': here's what I was doing.
Two (2) separate projects, each with it's own VSP with chapter points. A third VSP (project) that has nothing in the timeline, only used as a vehicle to build the DVD using the VSP option to pull in the other two (2) separate projects. i.e., only used for the DVD burn.(This allows me to 'mix-n-match').
Went back to the first VSP to add a Black color, text on the color and transition (fade to black). Went back into 3rd VSP to create DVD and discovered that entire 1st VSP had been cropped. Went back into 1st VSP and it now too had been cropped. Deleted VSP 1 and started over. 2nd attempt worked. Not sure why.
Really glad to hear that X8 (for which I'm waiting for delivery) has made these things much easier.
Hi Trevor,
I apologize for not being clearer about what I was trying to do and for any frustration that may have caused you. Both projects (VSP 1 & VSP2) contain AVC (H.264) 1280x720p; therefore, in X6 the Project Properties cannot be made to match.
In order for someone to play them on an OLD DVD player, I have to transcode them down to mpeg-2 720x480p. For a different audience, I was building an AVCHD disc, but since X6 doesn't support the original format (1280x720), I am transcoding up to 1920x1080. I'll really be glad to get X8 up and running as it seems that it addresses most of the idiot-syncrasies that I've experienced

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hi Allen
I do understand your workflow regarding the use of VSP with chapter points, no frustration caused.
We usually recommend converting the project to a video file before burning and as far as I know would retain the chapter points details, so can be scanned in the burner module to recover those, but still need re-naming.
The workflow for burning DVD or the hybrid Avchd is much the same.
And yes you may have to convert the 1280 video to 1920 x 1080 to burn both Bluray and AVCHD discs.
Having said that they do support AVCHD (1280x720, 60p) so your video may not need conversion, simply render the project to 1280 x 720 x 60p (progressive)
You do not say what your frame rate is?
I have not burnt to those sizes for AVCHD, but tests on Bluray certainly would be ok.
If you do choose to convert first then the burning process is much faster as rendering the project is no longer required and the burn process starts with Convert Menu, no Convert Titles required.
But as I say I have not tried with AVCHD, I don’t see any reason for it not working.
If you add VSP’s as you do then Convert Title would render to 1920 x 1080.
Post updated
I ran a quick test
1 / created a short project with chapter points.
2 / converted my project by Share – Create Video File – AVCHD – last option 1280 x 720
3 / start a new project
4 / Share Create disc AVCHD – add video created in 2 above.
5 / Add / Edit Chapters – Auto Add Chapters – choose Insert Scenes as Chapters, finds the chapter points
6/ edit menu
7/ Burn disc starts with Convert Menu

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hello again Trevor,
Well I decided to wait for X8 to arrive before trying your suggestion. Took an extra 10 days over their projected arrival date for that to occur but at least now I have the latest version.
I installed X8 and the updates as per posted on this Web Board (i.e., X8, SP2 & SP3) but, alas, more problems than expected. More frequent crashes than with X6! I've yet to search the Web Board for answers but suspect it has something to do my still running on XP. I noticed that when installing the updates, that a couple of modules were requiring '.net 4.5', which is not supported for XP (can't even be installed). Had to restore XP system and then decided to just install X8 sans updates. At least I can get some testing done.
It seems that the majority of the downloads from uTube and other web sites are of the 1280x720p format at '30fps (29.97)'. I'm happy to see that X8 supports the 1280x720p part, but had a difficult time finding the '30fps' part; I did finally find a workable solution under the DV/AVI format options but a better one under the 'mobile' format option which actually has all of the correct options already set. And at least the project properties are correctly changed to that of the clip when adding to the timeline, and I can generate a file by selecting the 'same as project' option, which is a big step forward.
Unfortunately, I was hoping that when going to the burn module, that the Chapter Point Names, i.e., those that had been added via the 'rename' function, would be carried over and preclude the necessity of having to retype them a second time. Doesn't happen, as you know.
My next test will be to follow your example and create an AVCHD file, although a cursory look, just now, at the burn module only shows options for 1980 or 1440 x1080i, and nothing for 1280x72 although it is defined in the AVCHD spec.
Any ideas?

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hi Allen
When we add chapter points to the timeline and use Chapter Points Manager to name the chapters, those names should show when using the Share Create disc option.
I would advise that you first convert the project to a compliant video file suitable to burn a disc,
For your 1280 x 720 video has to use 60P
1920 x 1080 uses 30fps.
As does Mpeg2 DVD
Then use that file to burn the disc.
Any chapter points added to the timelines should be retained / embedded to the video file and again should be able to scan for when doing Create Disc, Add / Edit chapters.
I need to check this for AVCHD, I am sure it did work for DVD.
I will do a quick check to make sure that is correct.
Render your project to use AVCHD 1280 x 720 x 60P, that will create a compliant video file.
AVCHD 1920 x 1080 X 30fps would also be suitable.
Start a new project, set project properties to your video files properties
Nothing in the timeline
Share Create Disc AVCHD will burn a Hybrid disc using HD video to a standard DVD disc.
From the burner module make sure Do Not Convert Compliant Video Files is ticked, should be selected anyway.
Using 1280 x 720 x 60P although does not show in that panel is compliant, when you hit Burn the process should start with Convert Menu,
If Convert title shows then the video files are being rendered / converted
When we add chapter points to the timeline and use Chapter Points Manager to name the chapters, those names should show when using the Share Create disc option.
I would advise that you first convert the project to a compliant video file suitable to burn a disc,
For your 1280 x 720 video has to use 60P
1920 x 1080 uses 30fps.
As does Mpeg2 DVD

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Thanks Trevor, I'll give both of your suggestions a try and let you know what happens. Right now, in the States, it's about 2 hours until Super Bowl kickoff .... so I'll have to get back to you later on
BTW: It's the NAMES that I assign to the Chapter points that are not carrying over to the burn module; the chapter points themselves are present. We'll see what happens when using the different formats... thanks again

Re: VSProX6: Chapter Points not follow clip when editing
Hi
When I added chapters to the timeline, named them.
Then Share Disc DVD the chapters and names were there as part of the project file.
If I render the project to a video file, (Mpeg2) chapters could be accessed but no names or rather default names.
You may be best adding chapter names in the burner module
Concentrate on getting the workflow and quality correct with no additional renders.
