Paint Shop Pro X8 Not starting

Post by ELT627 »

I have been running PSP since it was Jasc and have never had an issue with an upgrade. I have just upgraded to pspx8 on my home laptop which was running psp6. The program appeared to install properly. However when I click on the icon on the desktop,or under programs, the program will not open. I gives me a swirling circle and then just stops. I have removed and reinstalled it and no difference. I just received the disk and tried installing that way, but the results were the same. I am looking for a solution.

Hi ELT627

There are others here on the forum much wiser and more experienced than me in such matters. However, I did briefly experience something similar, and also intermittent freezing up of the program, with my initial install of PSP X8. I tried various things, including contacting Corel Support. They pointed me to this - http://howto.corel.com/en/c/How_to_remo ... tem_issues - which was a part of the solutiion for me. The other parts consisted of running Windows Update to update my graphics drivers and various other operating system components, and I also found that my anti-virus program had interfered with the install process - I had to temporarily disable it to reinstall PSP properly.

As I said, though, this may or may not work for you. I'm hoping some of the more knowledgeable forum members may be able to assist you.

This kind of problem can occur when upgrading any software. And sometimes a Microsoft update throws a wrench in the works. The following steps work most of the time for me.

1. Uninstall all versions of PSP on your computer.
2. Run a search for the program then use your file manager to manually delete residual files and folders.
3. Create a backup of your registry (assuming you use Windows) -> save it in Desktop.
4. Download and install the free but excellent "Home" edition of Registrar Registry Manager by Resplendence.
5. Use the search feature in Registrar Reg, Mgr to locate the myriad of leftover keys in the registry. Search for "Jasc" (without the quotation marks) firstly.
6. Click on the first item -> scroll down to the last item -> hold down the "Shift" key -> click on the last item.
7. Right-click in any part of the highlighted area -> Delete. All this takes less than a minute.
8. Now search for "Paint Shop Pro," and later search for "PSP6" as well as for "PSP 6" and "PaintShopPro."
9. Reboot when finished deleting the leftover keys. You will now have no traces of PSP on your system.
10. Now try to install the upgraded version of PSP. If you are still unable to install the program, the copy is corrupt.

Be careful using Registrar Reg Mgr. It's safe to delete keys from a program with a unique name, like Jasc, IrfanView and Nero. I once deleted all the keys for the AVG security software, only to learn that a key name AVGeneral is part of an Abobe app. Thank God I had backed up the registry. A simple click on the *.reg file solved the problem: IU then had to read every item found in the search results.

On the other hand, deleting all your versions of PSP and then still failing to install PSP X8 could leave you with no version of PSP to work with at all.
I doubt if earlier versions of PSP will be the problem. I have installed X8 and SP1 on a Win 7 and Win 10 machine with Jasc PSP8, PSP X2-X7 all installed and working.
No problems with installation or running the various programs including X8.
I have avoided uninstalling any version of PSP as recently they leave so much behind requiring the use of a cleanup tool.
In your case make sure you have a good version of the program (you say you have the disk version now), use the cleanup tool for PSP X8 (see the thread near the top for Cleanup tool for X8).
Then turn off your internet access and also turn off your Virus protection and any firewalls. Check for any other programs running in the background and perhaps turn them off as well (see your system tray).
Then install PSP X8 , reboot and try and run it.

As I mentioned in another thread on the SP1 problems I am running AVG and Zone Alarm as was JoeB another who was not experiencing the problems of others. It may be that firewalls or virus programs or some other program running in the background may be interfering with the correct installation and running. As well if you have purchased recently you may have a free contact with Corel to get them to help with installation. (good luck with that as others seem to have problems)

There could be a number of things causing the start up however, unless you are very computer savvy, DO NOT go into the registry.
Sometimes uninstalling can cause more problems than solve.
Did you use the Cleanup Tool to uninstall? This is always recommended and can be obtained in a locked post above.

When you click the PSPX8 icon how long do you wait, or do you click it again. Sometimes clicking more than one double click can stall it. Check the Task manager to see if it is running. Have you done default programming? Try opening an image with PSPX8. Did you install both 32 and 64bit versions? If not, it is highly recommended you do.

Lastly, it is not necessary to uninstall any previous versions of PSP they will work fine on your PC.
