Anyway, as to your proposed course of action: Normally, you should not have to uninstall X5, but in this case it is probably wise, given the possibility of "cross contamination" of the codec; and also because of your proposal in (2). You would not be able to do this easily if you still have one version of the program on the computer. I am assuming here that you have no other Corel program installed...? But if not, then the Registry search and destroy mission would be extremely useful.

Re: WMV files VS x8.5 error "File format Mismatch"
PROBLEM SOLVED !! ( or at least it now works)
Corel support phoned me this morning and we discussed various options, it was decided the best option was to uninstall everything Corel/Ulead and start again. I did this but the problem was still there, this afternoon the latest insider release of windows 10 downloaded & installed, and to my amazement it has fixed the wmv file mismatch error !
I guess I have been a bit at fault here as I did not specify my win10 version was an insider pre-release. The issue appears to have been a windows issue and not a Corel one.
Thank you Ken & Brian for bringing my problem to Corel technical teams attention and thanks to the team for contacting me to help find a resolution. If I had only waited 9 hours today the windows update would have hopefully rectified the problem without having to uninstall/reinstall everything.
Cheers

Re: WMV files VS x8.5 error "File format Mismatch"
Hi Terry
Its good that you have fixed your particular problem.
Normally I run X8 64 bit on Windows 7, but a similar problem for (AlexL03) caused me to re-install CVSX8 32 bit and indeed experiencing crashes which incredibly I have now found are associated with WMV files. So not just a Windows 10 issue.
The program crashes on demand when selecting the Instant Projects library, hopefully you do not experience that?
Terry If you do have any further problems don’t hesitate to get in touch.
