Anyway, as to your proposed course of action: Normally, you should not have to uninstall X5, but in this case it is probably wise, given the possibility of "cross contamination" of the codec; and also because of your proposal in (2). You would not be able to do this easily if you still have one version of the program on the computer. I am assuming here that you have no other Corel program installed...? But if not, then the Registry search and destroy mission would be extremely useful.
