WMV files VS x8.5 error "File format Mismatch"

I have just purchased VS Pro X8.5 after using VS Pro X5 for a number of years. After installing the Bonus Content which has wmv introduction videos I get the error, as per the Preview heading above, when attempting to use the clips. This also occurs in VS Pro X5, which I have just realised. What am I doing wrong ?

You're not the only one who has this problem. This issue is discussed on the forum for a few days.

It is strange that the developers did not give any comments on this issue. For example, on the Avast forum, provides comprehensive information on all questions connected with the mistakes in their software. Why Corel is so dismissive of its customers, I personally can not understand...

And welcome to the forums.
I assume the Bonus Content has been downloaded from the Corel Guide Do-More downloads.
Can you check your computer that you are using Windows Media Player latest version, the plater provides codecs that are used to play WMV files.

Yes the bonus content was part of the package downloaded with VS Pro X8.5. The WMV files will play with other programs ie, VLC, windows 8 media player, Windows 10 Film & TV player, so I am assuming the right codecs are present and VS cannot use them ?

I have just tried some of the WMV videos 32 in all, they all seem to play ok using Video Studio.
Can you go to Help menu check for Updates to see if there are any available?

I am using Windows 7, maybe a Windows issue given you are running 10.

Just in case can you open Windows Media Player to also check for updates

As you have just purchased the program I assume you are within the free Support period. Can you contact Corel Support to see if they know about any issues regarding WMV samples.

I've just tested those Bonus Content videos too and they all insert normally and play in my X8.5 x64 bit fully updated to 18.6.0.6. As you can see I am running Win 10 64 bit.

That is pure and utter rubbish. It takes a lot to annoy me, and such an answer *outrages* me... How can a supposed Corel employee send such an answer without, evidently, even thinking about it. Of course VS supports .wmv... The supply video in that format as presets, and one of the output formats under Share is, of course, wmv.

I wonder if this employee even knows what he/she said when they included in both input and output formats "Windows Media Format". I wonder what that means to them in video terms???

I am so annoyed I am going to bring this to the attention of the Corel exec who looks after VS... For an already vastly underwhelming support system, this takes the cake!!!

That’s outrageous, we know Corel Support to put it politely not the best it can be but this just takes the biscuit.

The guy either knows nothing about Video Studio or is taking the easy option to get rid of you.

Good idea Brian, I did as suggested and yes I can output a file as a WMV but this error appeared at the end of the encoding.

I would like you to know that WMV may have damage the file so I suggest that convert it to mp4 using third party application using freemake video converter to MP4. Let me know the result when you import your new video to VideoStudio.

It is obvious to me they have no idea of how to solve my problem let alone understand what it is, so, this is what I propose & would appreciate comments,

1) completely uninstall VS 5 and VS8
2) search the registry for any Corel or Ulead entries and delete them
3) re-install VS8.5
