PSP Can't Find My Scanner

Post by rfdjr »

I'm using PSP X which is my go to version, but I also have PSP X7. Both worked fine with my scanner, a Canon Pixma 8220 scanner/printer/copier for years. The last week I tried to scan something and found neither version of PSP is recognizing my scanner. It's just not in the list for TWAIN Source like it used to be. PSP x7 shows absolutely nothing in the list, PSP X shows WIA-WIA Canon 8200 series. But if I select the WIA as the source, it doesn't scan. It tells me

"An error occurred while setting scanner properties. If another program is scanning, please wait for it to complete and try again." When I click out of that, I get:

"An error occurred while trying to enable the data source."

Again, everything was working fine until a week ago, so I know that once, the scanner was being recognized and I could use it.

I contacted Canon today and they walked me through some things and I do have the proper drivers installed as it scans using the Canon scanning software. But I don't like that and I prefer to scan using PSP.

Can someone please possibly help me? Thanks.

Have you tried File>Import>From Scanner or Camera?
That's what I use.

Yes, that what I used. The scanner just isn't listed.

I assume it is listed in the Control Panel as mine is:
Scanner_location.jpg
The other thing you can try is to reset PSP using the Shift key trick:
If you have a custom workspace, save that.
Then close PSP.
Open PSP and hold the Shift key at the same time until you see a message announcing that PSP will be reset to it's default settings.
That cures a lot of ills.

You will need to re-do Preferences and your File Locations.
Fingers crossed that does the trick :-)

Thanks, I tried that reset holding shift when launching PSP and the scanner still doesn't show up. This is depressing. I've been scanning using PSP for close to 20 years. Now all of a sudden it can't find my scanner?

Tonight I did stumble across what I'm missing in Paint Shop Pro. When I used to scan, it was using Canon ScanGear. That's what was letting me scan in Paint Shop Pro. I was going through all the other programs I have where I can import with a scanner. And all but PSP found my scanner alright. And one of them opened up my old friend ScanGear. So I just spent the past hour trying to figure out why PSP won't find or use scan gear. This is driving me nuts. I become obsessed when I can't solve a problem like this. Especially when everything was working alright a week or two ago and then just stopped working. I just want my PSP?ScanGear combination back again. Why would it just suddenly stop working after YEARS of no problems?

I think (but stand to be corrected) that there is another relatively recent thread on this subject and that the problem is with PSP X8 64-bit which seems to have difficulty with TWAIN drivers. It should scan with WIA though.

It has been quite some time since I have used Scan Gear, but I seem to recall that you set the association with another program through it i.e. when you are in Scan Gear you tell it to open PSP when you use Scan...

First, I've edited my previous post to specifically say that it seems to be X8 64-bit which has problems with recognizing TWAIN drivers. X8 32-bit works fine with Scan Gear for me and my scanners show up in the TWAIN Source list.

And having re-read this thread I noticed that you don't use X8 but X7. However, X7 64-bit has the same problem (again, its 32-bit version does find and list the scanners). But you say that Scan Gear WAS previously recognized by X7 but just recently stopped recognizing your scanners. Could it be that in the past you were using the 32-bit version and now are trying to use the 64-bit version? That could explain things.

In any event, perhaps you should edit your profile to indicate which version of X7 you are using so we'll know for the future.

FWIW, I just found that the computer I am using to write this -- not the one in my Profile -- did not have ScanGear, or indeed a driver, installed for my old CanoScan 5200F (which has the same problem on my Profile computer rfdjr). So I found the most recent driver for it, which only went to Win 7, but I tried it anyway. Moreover it was supposedly a x64 bit driver, but I found on installing it that that does not necessarily mean that TWAIN in it is x64 bit. The 64 bit version of X8 (and X7) can't see any TWAIN driver or scanner, though it can Import from Camera or Scanner just fine, as it does from my Brother MFC scanner, which is also set up with x64 bit drivers.

X8 x32 bit, however, sees both the Canon and Brother TWAIN drivers -- though with the Brother I get a warning message saying there could be problems and I should use Import From Camera or Scanner in preference. That's possibly because the Brother is a wifi and/or network printer...

Oh, and the CanoScan Toolbox is the place where you designate the programs you want the various functions of the scanner to ope. I set PSP for SCAN 1 and PS for SCAN 2.

Thanks Ken. I thought of that but can't find any options to do so. As I said, Scan Gear opened with PSP two weeks ago. Now, nada.

But when you say "ScanGear" do you mean the ScanGear TWAIN page, or are you talking about the ScanGear Toolbox?

I'm not the OP, but given your post I thought I should point out that my post was with regard to using Scan Gear TWAIN. I don't even know if I have the toolbox. Likely have it somewhere in Programs but wasn't aware it existed and never had a need because I always open it from the Import menu of PSP.

To be more precise, in my case PSP 10 64-bit running Windows 10 or PSP8 64-bit runningWindows 7 cannot find my Cannon MX410 scanner with a TWAIN driver but it does find it using FILE>IMPORT>Camera or Scanner. Using the latter is not a good work around for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the number of clicks to get there and the lack of function in the scanning windows.

It's clear to me the problem is Corel's and not the scanner manufacturer not withstanding the several Corel posts asserting they are not at fault.

I downloaded VueScan 64-bit https://www.hamrick.com/ and it worked fine; clicking the PSP SCAN button launches VueScan. Pity I had to spend $50 to make PSP work.
