Oddly enough, the tool you want is called the Smart Carver.
I know, you just want to resize your image you don't want to carve anything. Well it offers options for resizing and selecting areas that are to remain untouched.
Smart Carver is found in the Image menu. Image -> Smart Carver
When the Smart Carver opens up you'll see two main boxes, "Object Removal" and "Smart Carving". Under "Object Removal" you'll see a button that looks like a paint brush with at "+" (plus sign) on it. This brush is used to indicate areas of your image that you want to preserve. It will color in green. So just paint over the person in the middle that you want to keep.
Next under the "Smart Carving" box enter in the new Width and Height parameters. It might be a bit slow as you enter both the Width and Height. Once you've changed the values you'll see what the changes look like in the preview window. You can click the "Hide Mask" checkbox to hide the green blob you had painted earlier. Just make adjustments until you get a good look.
You can find many tutorials on using the Smart Carver, though most will focus on carving out or removing objects from a photo. They will show where the brushes are, and how to set a new size for the photo.

As a matter of interest, what is the French term they use? I can bring it to the attention of Corel if it is still being used in more recent French versions of PSP. Maybe some of out French-speaking members can comment too: Joelle? Jean-Luc?

The big problem is that super tool can do 3 magic things :
- enlarge a photo/area
- erase an objet
- extend an object
Good luck to find a french expression to symbolize this 3 actions ! i searched, i didn't find one !

The French term used is "Graveur intelligent" (= intelligent engraver).Ken Berry wrote:As a matter of interest, what is the French term they use? Re: how to resize a picture with preseving a area in the mid
My first thought was 'Découpage intelligent' though I realise the noun describes the action rather than a tool. And 'Tailleur intelligent' is probably too confusing. PSP might be able to do many things, but not make a dress or suit!
But Jean-Luc's hint that this might be best discussed in the French forum is probably the correct course of action...
