Best Video Capture Device

Post by ottersea »

I have X8 and looking for a good video capture device to capture VHS tapes. I have a Diamond VC500 but it does not work with X8. Is that a good compatible device to use with X8? Thanks

Didn't the Diamond come with software of its own? Most devices do and the software is tweaked to work with the device. Not many work natively with VS. We normally recommend that people use the packaged software to capture then open it in VS for editing. It's easy. See http://myvideoproblems.com/ProblemPages ... tureW7.htm

Grass Valley do some great hardware, but to get the most from it you need to connect it to your pc with a firewire connection (IEEE1394).
It will work with VS

You may find some on eBay if buying new is out of reach.

It did but the audio track is waaay out of sync. on it. I know I can adjust the audio in VS it is just a pain to have to do it.

Had one of those and it worked great but it died on me so I am looking for something to replace it. I really do not want to spend that kind of money for just the few VHS tapes that I want to convert. Was hoping someone had a good alternative that worked.

Hi

Do you own a Mini DV camcorder or similar that supports Throughput / Passthrough.
That would act as a AV / DV converter.

VHS connected to AV-IN on camera then connected DV-Out to pc via Firewire would capture to Dv-Avi.

I hava a samsung sc-dc164 digital camcorder. In the manual it show it being connected to a VCR thru a AVI in and it shows a USB out to a computer. I do not know if both can be connected at the same time.

No, that is a DVD camera. What Trevor was talking about was specifically a mini DV camcorder which uses small DV tapes and films in DV/AVI format. It connects via a mini Firewire port and cable to a computer which has a Firewire port or card. Some allow what Trevor mentioned as passthrough. There is also a variant number of Sony models called Digital 8 which have this facility, as well as being able to play directly analogue 8 mm and Hi8 tapes. But the passthrough is necessary to be able to pass a signal from a VCR playing a VHS tape through the camera to the computer in digital format. And I'm afraid Firewire is a necessary, though almost disappeared, technology required for this.

No do not have anything like that. The Samsung was being seen on the VS8 but as soon as I tried to capture the disc I had in there it totally locked up. I have firewire but do not have anything since the Canopus died to use with it.

Are you absolutely sure the Canopus has died? Microsoft at some stage changed the Firewire driver, and this caused previously working Firewire devices to no longer work. But reverting the driver to the one listed as 'legacy' usually fixed that problem. It's easy: http://myvideoproblems.com/ProblemPages ... tureW7.htm

Yeah already did that and still did not work. I just kind of went down hill. First lost the sound altogether then none of the controls on it would work. Probably will try the roxio converter and see how that works. Maybe since they are really the same company VS8 will recognize it.

If you get it from Roxio, I believe you have 30 days to try it.

If you do get it, I would recommend that you use the Roxio software to capture. Any edits you can do in VS or otherwise use the Roxio software to burn to DVD.

I have not tried to use VS with the Roxio device but maybe will give it a go.
