PaintShop Pro X7 and X8

Post by vpnavy »

I was cleaning up my PC and noticed that I have both (X7 and X8) installed. Is it safe to uninstall X7?

Thanks!

Yes, but no need to if you have the space. Some of us keep multiple versions on the same computer in case a later one develops a fault which the earlier one doesn't have. But they are independent installations, so if you want to, you can uninstall X7 without problems.

Why ? Are you short on hard disk memory? Many have didderent versions of PSP installed. If one has a problem then you can usually use one of the other versions as a backup processor until you find out what the problem is. As well some versions have features that later versions have dropped or changed.
For X7 v X8 - see the angst raised on the changed Save v Save As in X8. Many are annoyed with the extra steps that X8 puts you through . I still use X2 for fast power processing of images, X4 for text work and only sometimes look at the later versions.

My only 'gripe' with multiple versions is that every now and again I click on a file in Explorer to open it. Rather than opening the file with my latest version, x7 for me, it will open with one of the older versions such as x4. I guess it's opening the file in the version it was created with.

I have all my files set to open in Irfanview by default (apart from the program files .pspimage). When I want to open a single file in a version of PSP, I use a right click and choose.
When I intend to open a number of files, I usually have the folder containing copies of those files open and then double click the version of PSP I want to open. Then its drag and drop whichever files I want to process into the workspace.

Then you have not done your settings correctly in the operating system. Check which files open in certain programmes then you won't have the issue you mentioned.

Trueblue I have checked my settings a number of times because I thought that was how it worked. Regardless every now and again files will open withe an older version of PSP.

Brucet, I have Win 10 now and with this PSP leads you by the nose to file associations. I can't remember exactly how PSP interacted with Win 7 - but have you done associations via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs? There are a few options for checking and changing associations. I've had the same experience as you describe and I suspect your old associations may be wiped out when certain changes are made with PSP.

MarkZ all my file associations are PSPx7. About 10% of the time files will open with PSPx4. Now and again with x6. But this only happens with file that were created or modified with those versions of PSP.
If I'm looking for an old photo in an old folder and click on it most of the time it will open in x7. But now and again they will open in an older version.
