Map image to gradient?

Post by gbotes »

In Gimp it is possible to do gradient mapping where you apply a gradient to an image in such a way that the gradient colors replace the colors in the image. This is a great way to do black and white, sepia and similar image conversions. I'm looking for a way to do this in PSP. I'm assuming it would require a script as I didn't find another way in PSP. Any advice?

I know of two ways: 1 KPT plugins. One of them, i don't remember which one, allows you to create a gradient and map it to the luminescence channels in the image.

The other way is to use pixelnook's GradientMap script - http://pixelnook.vapho.com/kit/GradientMap.zip

It's not an exact equivalent to the gradient Map effect in GIMP or Photoshop. It decreases the number of colors to 256 and edits the palette to get an effect that is close enough.

Cool, thanks LeviFiction. I'll check this out.

Hmm, I couldn't find a KPT plugin that does gradient mapping in my collection and the PixelNook script doesn't produce the desired effect. the result it seems to give me is more like when one has applied a colour overlay rather than remapping the image colors. Looks as if I will have to keep using Gimp when I want to do this :)

Well, the plugin doesn't advertise itself as a Gradient Map plugin. But it does have a mode that can be used that way.

I think it's KPT Gradient Lab. But my plugins are reporting an error when I try to use them so I can't verify. Once you've set up your gradient in the Gradient Lab you can change the blend mode to Luminance and it'll map the gradient's luminance to the image's luminance

Ah, yes, I see. I found Gradient Lab and wouldn't have figured out how to do it without you cluing me in. Gradient Lab works. Thanks, LeviFiction.
