X8 problems after installing the SP1

Post by Gold Acres »

When I first installed SP1 for X8, I had no problems at all. But that changed the next day. Now it crashes all the time. Especially when switching between the Text tool and the Brush tool. I happened so often that I decided to uninstall.
SO, I used the X8 cleaner tool. Now I can't install X8 at all...
I get to the point just after I enter my registration code.
See attached image.

I would appreciate helpful suggestions. I am the owner of the Beginner's Workshop for PSP. Several of the Mentors have experienced similar problems.

Until somebody with more expertise comes along, this is what comes to my mind:

First, how long ago was this? Is it possible, in other words, to go back to a restore point prior to your installation of the SP1 patch or, even better, prior to installing X8? If so, that's what I'd do and then try to re-install X8.

If that's not possible, troubleshooting has to be done step by step.

First, you said the patch worked fine then the next day things didn't work. Think about what might have changed with your computer between those two days. Did you (or did Microsoft automatically) install any Windows updates between the day things worked and the day things didn't? If so, uninstall the update and try again. In fact, if you actually do have a good previous restore point AND if Windows won't do the restore, you should first try uninstalling any Windows update that was done after installing the patch when it worked and when it didn't work. Then try the restore point again.

Did you install any other software and/or hardware between the time the patch worked and the next day when it didn't work?

If you can try those suggestions, and answer those questions, then please get back to us with detailed results of each suggestion/step you took and what happened.

I should add that I have both the 32 & 64-bit versions of X8 installed with the SP1 patch on my Windows 8.1 system and both work with no issues and no crashes. So I have to suspect it's system specific with your system and something must be conflicting with the installation process.

At first I was really pleased with the patch because my problem of the error pop-up about selections didn't occur. But then all the new problems started.

Have tried the restore to no avail before I did the Cleaner tool. Nothing new was added to the computer in the meantime.

Those were good suggestions, but didn't resolve the problem.

i am windows 7
i have x8 32 and x8 64 installed

i have had trouble since i installed that ..'patch' too you are not alone
it is taking forever to paint with a brush and crashes with some brushes sometimes. then does not crash with the same brush other times... (the patch installed an add that i do not want) i have the particle brush plug in but when i go to the particle plugin it crashes .I hasten to add it loaded perfectly before the patch..now i it crashes so cannot use the very brushes the add is about.
i also had to use the shift launch to reset because all my tool icons were mixed not one icon was correct .
i took a screen shot of that if you want to see. just let me know . the shift reset corrected that

but there are big issues with this patch .. i would like a way of returning to my x8 without the patch . i do not want to use the cleaner i want my x8 how it was please
without the slow slugishness without the crashes and without THAT ADVERT.

Hi, I'm sorry to see you met this problem. Let me try to confirm the step you executed in advance.

1. PSPX8 version (18.0.0.124) was installed and update to SP1 version (18.1.0.67)
2. Uninstall PSPX8.1 version using PSPX8 cleanup tool.
3. Try to install PSPX8 version (18.0.0.124) again, but it's failed as a screenshot.

Let me know if above of my understanding is correct or not. Then we can take effort to investigate it. Thank you .

Cheers

Hey @josephlin!

I'm not the OP but Hey! I just want to say thanks for showing that Corel is actually checking out some of the issues with PSP brought up in this forum! Having read many, many posts in these forums for a long time it seems that, while people like the program a lot, when it comes to their opinion of Corel support, not so much! And that may be considered an understatement by some. :-)

I also recently noticed another post by a Corel rep regarding an issue, which surprised me also. Seeing two, by two different Corel reps, in such a short time regarding two different posts/issues is a pleasant surprise to say the least, and most welcome!

As a marketing consultant for many years I know that Customer Support - in fact and not just in words - is the least expensive yet most effective method of achieving customer loyalty which, just by itself, generates tons of free word-of-mouth recommendations that generate profit. My mobility provider, for example (with whom I've been for 14 years or more), made it their #1 corporate priority some years ago, and is the best in that area of any utility or company I've ever dealt with. And they keep improving it because it has proven to be a profitably successful corporate strategy.

I am going to now be cautiously optimistic that perhaps Corel is starting to appreciate that (a) the multitude of complaints about customer support in these forums - and other platforms - to date have been detrimental to their bottom line, (b) Corel is actually taking steps to monitor platforms like these forums to get real feedback on real issues that users experience, and (c) Corel will continue to show a presence in the forums so that users will feel that their concerns are actually being taken seriously and helpfully by Corel.

Thanks again!
Regards,

JoeB

You have the information correct. I even tried a system restore, but it didn't fix the problem.

This morning I tried again to install and was successful. However the program still freezes requiring that I use the Task Manager to close it. The task manager does not say that it's "not responding" but after not being able to do anything for 10 minutes, is would say it isn't. Took me an hour to complete the creation of a very simple Facebook Cover to welcome in the new year. https://www.facebook.com/gold.acres.poms

I have not installed the update again.

PSP X8 was working fine until I installed SP1. I did a fresh install and the program still crashes after the start up screen. I did find a way to run the program which is to direct a file to open directly from an explorer window, but this is not inspiring a lot of confidence. Personally, I think you should take down SP1 until you find out what the problem is because clearly we are not alone. At least the original release version was stable and quite good in my opinion. As a PSP user from just about version 1, I find this situation maddening...it is not the first time a service pack has corrupted the program. Please fix it.

At about the time this came out, Windows update KB3132372 did too. That update has caused me a lot of headaches and I have uninstalled it. The problem is that it keeps installing itself and I have to keep uninstalling it. However, with it gone, and the SP1 update also gone, X8 is working without freezing.

I have not installed the update again.
To help with freezing or not responding, go to File, Preferences, Display & Caching and un-tick Enable scratch disks. I also had this problem along with others. Once this scratch disk was untick I never had PSP freeze or not respond again. This has been reported to the Development Team.

I have installed SP1 and so far so good. I'm still going through checking everything works fine.

That seems opposite of what it should do. The Scratch Disk is like Virtual Memory.

I tried the scratch disk approach - it did not work for me.

It's only for temporary files so it shouldn't have much affect. Turning it off for the time being isn't going to cause any damage but it will stop you programme from freezing and not respond.
