VS Pro X8.5 crashing constantly since SP3

Hey everyone,

VS Pro X8.5 is crashing every 2-3 minutes when I attempt to use it. I get the standard Windows error message: "Corel VideoStudio has stopped working, Windows is searching for a solution to the problem" etc., and then the program closes. I'm using Windows 10.

I don't know for sure if it's related to SP3, as this is the first time I've used VideoStudio since installing that update. I'm making the same type of videos with the same type of files (MOV and AVI) as I've been doing for months, and this has never happened before. The crashes happen even if I'm not actually doing anything in the project - just leaving the program open will cause a crash. Even if I save frequently enough to keep re-opening and making progress between crashes, once I'm finished editing the program crashes during rendering, since my videos are too long to render within a couple minutes.

Any idea what's going on?

That frame size 854 x 480 is very unusual and not standard. I'd hazard the guess that that is the cause of the crashes. Where did the video come from? And what format are you trying to render it to?

I don't think that the resolution is the problem. That size is perfectly well for youtube upload that I use.
But I just wonder how long is your project? When I used uncompressed AVI's it was for just about 30 sec animation project that had 5 leyers.

The video is a game capture from FRAPS, but I've been using those videos (from the same game and everything) for months before now without problems. I've been trying to render it with the following properties:

MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 15000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 256 Kbps

The videos that I tried to edit/render were all 10-15 minutes, but I've never had a problem with that before when using the same type of files for the same length projects. I've gone upwards of 25 minutes with no issues in the past.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's the videos. The same thing happens to me since I bought Corel Videostudio Ultimate. The software just hangs, gives that error and then closes. I haven't figured out a certain pattern except for some videos converted on a site that downloads from YouTube links. Apart from those situations where Corel just hangs right when you want to import those files, there are other instances when it crashes without any particular reason. Recently I discovered that even the B key doesn't work (it should move a frame backwards), only the F does (moving a frame forwards).

I guess either Corel have released a not-finished product, either Windows 10 is creating some issues to this software. Or who knows what else is going on. It's definitely not just the video formats, as many users are experiencing the frequent hangs and crashes, although having good hardware and proper videos.

Does anybody at Corel care about this issues?

I'd like to pop in to say that, after several days, the issue seems to have resolved itself. I'm not sure what happened; I didn't change anything at all, just kept trying.

Exact same issue here!

I finally found that with Windows 10 it saves previous versions of software and I was able to use the previous version to finish my project but the performance was certainly slow. At least it wasn't crashing though!

How do you access the previous version in Win 10?

Navigate to the application file and right click > Properties. There is a tab in there that says previous versions. Click on that and then find the application file and open it. Sometimes on the first try my computer gives me some kind of error message but it always opens on the second try.

I am having the same problem, and it's just begun today after having worked on this same project for at least a week. I HATE it when I update VS and the patch screws things up worse than they were so I often ignore the prompts to update. I finally took the plunge yesterday and wouldn't you know it, now VS is crashing after a minute of work. I know it is the update since nothing else (file formats, resolution, etc) has changed and my question involves restoring previous versions. I have right-clicked on the icon, found the "previous versions" tab but it says "there are no previous versions available". Does anyone know how I might access said previous versions?

My project is a Year End recap and this is time sensitive and useless to me unless I get it done today. Where is Corel with at least a professional "we're working on it" response when a problem like this is widespread?? Why are we left hanging with a product we paid good money for and that is necessary to our work but doesn't operate????

I failed to note in my previous comment that yes, I am updated to version 18.6.06, working on Windows 10. I am also having relinking problems with several files since the update but that at least I can begrudgingly work around.

update: I believe my problem may be related to issues with .WMV files. I cut one out and the program hasn't crashed for a whole 10 minutes (although it took about 5 restarts, trying different things before it'd crash, to discover this). Perhaps this is helpful to someone else and perhaps Corel with actually fix it.

Sorry to hear you are having problems, I don’t know if its W10 specific or affects W7 / 8.

I have installed SP3 and not having problems with my projects.
We are volunteers helping run the forum, we do not work for Corel, nor do Corel visit these forums, well not often.
You should report the problem to Corel Support or their facebook account, assuming your free support period has expired.

The only way I know of to remove SP3 is to re-install the program, Other than doing a System Restore to before SP3

Re-linking could be an issue when upgrading Windows with a change in file locations, the filing structure of W10 may be a little different to your older operating system. Re-link should only occur once for a particular set of clips.

I would not have thought the re-link issue was caused by SP3, I could be wrong of course.

Although the Re-link may be an issue in upgrading to Windows 10, changing drive numbers or moving files?

And the crashes may be WMV type files.

So may not be SP3

Where did you get the WMV flies from?
There are some WMV in the samples library, do you have problems using those?
