Yes - that does appear to be one of the set backs with that filter - no positive positioning by numbers
the only way I have got very close with similar problems is to hold a bit of paper against the screen and put a pencil mark at the bottom of the preview screen and another centred on the object then use that to align on other frames - has usually got me pretty close.
Just another thought - if you could get hold of a bit of transparent paper with a grid on it you could stick that across your screen to add a grid to the preview screen
