Finally moving on from Ulead 10
Just after a bit of advice.
Been using Ulead video studio 10 for years now, but have decided to upgrade to a more recent edition. It still manfully does the job I require from it for my projects, but a few glitches have appeared in the running of the program, and the thought is that maybe an updated software will make what I do even slicker and broaden possibilities.
My worry is though: is the usability in the more recent Corel video studio's similar to Ulead 10? Or will I be almost learning from scratch?
Can anyone suggest which of the recent video software i'd be best purchasing? Do I go for the most recent Corel video studio x8 or are earlier versions just as good? Or is there other makes of video editing software out there (like Magix) you would advise to buy instead?
I mostly do little animation projects and music montages which I upload to You Tube - and Ulead10 has been great for that; so i'm not really needing it to do too much more than what I was asking of Ulead10. I would however, like it to have more options to layer more audio sounds than the 2 timelines Ulead 10 gives you.
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Thank you

Welcome back,
Strangely enough only you can tell what's good for you and your needs.
Another good thing is that you can get the current VS as trial and test how you handle it.
The next good thing is that these dayz VS X8 versions are at the lowest price on amazon

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
Although it is quite a major step forward from Ulead 10 to Corel X8 you will find most of the layout and editing options very similar
there are now 4 audio tracks but upto 20 overlays
If your upgrading surely you will go for the very latest version - we are here to help you through the change
I am afraid these forums are only for the discussion of Corel products and we cannot allow discussion of competitors products - but we all think Videostudio is the best at the price anyrate so would recommend you stay with that.

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
Hi
Ulead Video Studio 10, that’s going back a while.
Editing your projects hasn’t changed that much we still use the same workflow and approach in creating the movies.
Things have changed within the workstation layout, where VS 10 has a single row of tabs across the top, practically in order of use from Capture on the left to Share on the right, half of these and a few more take up a position vertically between the library and preview screen.
Library layout is similar although the format has changed, a single library page displays all types of clip, Video Audio and Images. UVS10 has separate pages for those.
Improved editing techniques including supporting High Definition is one of the major changes.
The burner module as far as I remember is practically the same although it is now possible to save the menu titles and chapter points, good if you burn discs.
The latest versions of Video Studio also give the option to purchase the Ultimate package, (I don’t think that was offered with UVS10 ???) the program is the same as Pro but has installed many plugins, filters.
You need to decide if you require the Ultimate version
You should download and run the trial version for X8 Pro, it is much limited in what it can do, but sufficient to create a YouTube Mpeg4.
It will certainly give you a feel of the program
Good luck

Thank you very much for the replies. So much worthwhile information. Think I'll download the trial but almost certainly looking like I'll take the plunge and purchase the x8. Will read up on the differences between pro and ultimate. Have to say; having had a quick look at prices on Amazon, was surprised how reasonable they are.

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
There is a matrix here which will allow you to compare the last few versions and see what you can expect in your new purchase
http://www.videostudiopro.com/docs/prod ... son-en.pdf
If you were happy that you could do all you want in Ulead 10 then I would suggest you do not need the extras in the Ultimate version - unless you are going to launch into much more fancy editing

Brian, don't you think those extras worth 1 serving of fish and chips?

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
I am not at all sure what Amazon are selling - Corel themselves do not offer the programme on disc anywhere
so where did Amazon get the cheap discs from - and how can they include the extras, some of which which require licences at a lower price than the pro version

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
That VideoStudio x7 Ultimate for 39.97 looks a good price for that package, that would make a good replacement of the Ulead Video Studio software, I was very lucky, after reading some of Terfyn's posts on another forum saying how good Corel VS was so I started looking around on Ebay for sometime to see what they went for, then I managed to bid and win a VS x7 Ultimate for £16.50 including postage, it was advertised as sealed in box, unregistered unwanted present, I was a little apprehensive as what it might be but when it came it was still sealed in it's box and had a genuine registration code, so I was lucky.
Now getting on like a house on fire with it after a slow frustrating time missing the quick way I could work with my Serif MoviePlus, but then I can remember the same thing when I went from Adobe Premiere to MoviePlus.
I suppose it looks like if you're happy with something and it does what you want and can work quickly, Why change ? .......I suppose I saw the VS x7 starting at 99p and thought I'll put a maximum bid in of £12.50 and see what happens and got it at that
Alan

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
Thanks again for all replies.
One last query: Is it possible with either pro or ultimate to add more than 2 timelines for sound? Or do you just have to make do with the 2 available...
I do a lot of animation work where I do tend to need layered sounds sometimes.

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
The latest versions have 4 audio tracks - perhaps you missed the link which I posted above which is for a matrix giving features and comparisons to other versions
try again at - - http://www.videostudiopro.com/docs/prod ... son-en.pdf
there is also the option to add sound to a blank video and put that in one of the 20 video overlay tracks and chroma key out the image so that just the sound plays

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
I did check the matrix link you sent but must've missed the 4 track audio option.
I took your advice and downloaded a trial run of videostudio and been playing about with it. Very impressed and relieved how similar its useability is to my old Ulead VS10 - but never saw the option on it to give you more audio tracks. Is that because it's a trial of x8 pro? Is it just Ultimate that has that option? If so I will definitely be spending the extra cash to go with Ultimate.

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
No all versions have the 4 track option - the ultimate adds special effects by Boris. Mercalli , Adorage
go to "Settings >> Track Manager" to make additional tracks visible

Re: Finally moving on from Ulead 10
I might be being totally thick here, but cannot find 'Track Manager' under settings.
The list has Preferences, Project properties, Smart proxy manager, library manager, chapter point manager, cue point manager and layout settings.
Am I missing something or is it that trial x8 doesn't have this function?

Ah - well that must be yet another limitation of the trial I am afraid - - I have never used the X8 trial - all previous trials were 100% complete
so - in the full purchased version you should see this
