Opening multi-page pdf
I have a 5 page pdf and want to open every page in PSPx7 but when I open it, only the first page shows. I'm probably overlooking some really simple solution (I hope) but I've searched and can't find an answer.

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
PSP does not support mutli-page anything. You either have to export each page separately and load them one by one into PSP or use a different program to edit the PDF.

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
I have no problems opening a 16-page PDF in PSP X8. It is a catalog in which I am altering pricing using the Text tool Each page is opened in it's own tab.

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
I also have no difficulty opening multipage PDFs in X8. In fact I just opened a 12 page one. I got a message saying I was wanting to open a 12 page document and that this could take some time -- did I want to continue? I OK'd that, and it took a little over a minute to read the pages, then started opening them. When it got to page 10, I got another message saying that opening a file with this many pages could slow down editing considerably -- did I want to continue. Again I said OK, and the remaining pages opened with the others, each page on its own tab.
When I tried opening the same document in X7, however, while I got the first message warning me that a 12 page document would take some time, the first page opened immediately but none of the others followed. I waited a few minutes, but there was no further activity.
So the simple answer seems to be that X7 will not open multipage documents, but X8 will. Curious, though, that X7 gives the same initial warning as X8, suggesting it *can* open them given time...

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
I can open multi page pdf's in X7, so I'm afraid that the simple answer isn't a problem with X7. I only tested on one pdf, and when I click to open the document I get a warning that it has X number of pages which might slow down the operation and I accept it and it opens. Perhaps the problem was with something in the formatting of the particular pdf's the OP was trying to open.
EDIT: The first pdf I opened (above) had transparency and two pages and worked with the transparency Also, I just opened a 52 page pdf that didn't have embedded transparency and it also opened as separate pages. When it got to 10 pages I did get the option to continue but decided to cancel at that stage because opening 10 pages did show that, in fact, X7 - at least the 32-bit version - will open pdf images, and it also doesn't matter if the pdf does or does not have embedded transparency. I don't have my PSP windows tabbed, but cascaded if that might make a difference.

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
Thanks Joe. Your comments made me think some more about what I did above. While thinking that with X7 I had opened the same 12 page PDF which opened successfully in X8, I realised I had in fact opened one with the same name but a different date. They were of an identical set of pages, only in the one that failed to open nothing had been edited (it was a form). I just opened exactly the same one I opened in X8 in X7, and this time it worked fine. But I can't work out why the version which had been edited would not open...

Was that a misprint? In the second instance I have bolded did you mean the version that had not been edited?Ken Berry wrote:...only in the one that failed to open nothing had been edited (it was a form). The first one I opened was a 2 page tutorial created by Spandex Rutabaga years ago I believe on creating out-of-bound images, with text and images and a transparent background. The second was a 52 page text tutorial created by a writing program called Scrivener and saved in PDF format by that program with no embedded transparency. Perhaps there is something in your non-edited form that makes the form part non-editable and is not properly recognized in PSP as a legit PDF file, but I'm just guessing and really have no idea.
It might help if the OP provides more detail about the pdf that wouldn't open???

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
I am now in a dreadful muddle -- the one that successfully opened in both X7 and X8 was the 'empty' form i.e. it hadn't been filled in. The one that failed in X7 had been filled in.
But here's a kicker! X8 now won't open more than the first page of *any* multipage PDF, whether original/unedited or not. I'll try rebooting to see if somehow or other the opening and failure of X7 has somehow affected X8...
EDIT: And a further kicker is that after rebooting and pointing X8 at the *filled-in* i.e. edited form (first checked with my PDF editor to ensure it *had* been filled in), it opened everything but the form was empty! I moved the original empty form to another directory and tried it again, but again X8 opened all the empty pages!
Then I tried it again in X7, which opened only the first page of the edited PDF. And on reopening X8 and trying again, it did the same thing i.e. only the first page of the edited form!
I give up!

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
This sounds like it is going to be a bit complicated to unravel, and undoubtedly one that will have to be resolved (if it can) by a step-by-step and maybe time intensive process of elimination. Unfortunately at this time of year time is scarce on the ground but unless someone comes up with a quick solution then it might be a puzzle worth working on for awhile when time permits.Ken Berry wrote:I am now in a dreadful muddle -- the one that successfully opened in both X7 and X8 was the 'empty' form i.e. it hadn't been filled in. The first thing to know is what pdf editor you use.
That said, obviously pdf editors embed information about what is on each page and the page number, plus what the next page number is with its contents, etc. While PDF conversion/saving is not my area at all, it seems to me that the various editors have perhaps different levels of complexity when it comes to save settings So it might be a matter of selecting the correct setting to allow the editor to account for additional info that has been added to or deleted from the document that might break the connection between pages (as seen by PSP) so that PSP can no longer see that another page follows the first. In that regard, we have to know if, when it now only opens the first page, you still at least get the dialogue that says it recognizes that there are more pages but just doesn't open them, or if you don't get the dialogue at all.
From little acorns do great oak trees grow, and all that!
EDIT: Is the form one you can share for experimenting purposes? If not, is there another pdf file form you have the same issue with that you could share?
In the meantime, and when time permits, I'll try editing the Scrivener tutorial in both Scrivener and saving it in that program, and editing it in Adobe Acrobat and saving it in that program and see if I have any issues. This won't be immediately, however.

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
I have reported this as a bug weeks ago when i experienced the same thing. It seems that, for some reasons, some documents don't open properly, but up to now, i have not been told if they found a common denominator. Another tester experienced the same thing, on different documents. It is not constant, and it MIGHT have to do with some characteristics of each pdf document. Maybe it will be addressed in the first Service Pack?

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
Unfortunately, the form is my application for New Zealand citizenship, so understandably I am reluctant to make that available. Moreover, I don't regularly fill in forms on-line and convert them to multipage PDFs. So I don't know if I have any samples which might produce a similar result. The one I used was chosen since it was in my mind as being recently done and multipage... But I will look through my files to see if by chance there is another with a similar effect.JoeB wrote:Is the form one you can share for experimenting purposes? My PDF creator is Nitro Pro version 10.

Re: Opening multi-page pdf
I've found another online form already in PDF format. It's only 2 pages but illustrates the point. X8 (updated today with SP1) opened both pages of the original, which had not yet been filled in. I then filled in some of the windows using Nitro Pro 10 and saved it with a separate name. Neither X8 nor X7 would open more than the first page of this new document. I rebooted but this remained the case.
I'll email both the original unedited form and the partially completed form to you for playing around with when you have a spare moment.
