Been poking around on forum for about an hour and have come to the conclusion that VideoStudio has lots of problems, and I am not likely to get much help from anybody because of my wierd capture device.
I have a Setec 702DVDR box which connects up to the TV/Tivo/VCR units and then to my laptop with USB 2.0 - this came with some software from an outfit called Honestech and is called TVPlus 2.0 - it seems to capture ok but will not burn DVD's as it should. This led me to buy a copy of VS 7.0 SE on eBay which I have been trying to make work. It will burn the DVD's ok from the captured files made by the Honestech software. The problem is with trying to capture using VS 7.0 SE. I've fooled around with settings so many times I'm getting dizzy. The crazy thing is the very first time I tried capturing it worked great (don't remember the settings) except the audio on the recording was from the microphone in the laptop which picked up all the flim flam in the room at the time. I figured all I had to do was change the audio in setting and I would be in business. Wrong! As soon as I changed the audio to the capture device and tried to capture I get this error message "Failed to build an MPEG capture graph or unable to connect to MPEG capture pin. Capturing failed. The file created is corrupt and unusable. It will be automatically delected." This message means nothing to me other than it will not work.
I'm guessing from reading on the forum that using both pieces of software is what I am going to have to do to make good quality DVD's from my TV or Tivo output. I did think that the recorded DVD looked better from that first fluke capture using VS than it does from the other software. There is a $50 upgrade offer to the Honestech software to their lastest version. I downloaded a trial version and it seems to both capture and burn though the sound quality on the DVD seems a bit degraded. Haven't played with trial version any more until I get some answers on using VS. Not really interested in spending any more money on software to make this work if there is a work around.
My main questions have to do with the capture settings. Most of the help I find on this forum are for PAL rather than NTSC. Any help will be appreciated.

You might try www.videohelp.com for info on your capture device as well as the software. I am unfamiliar with both products.
IMHO, it would be better to upgrade Video Studio to v9 because it is much more stable then 7 and is better at capturing from analog converting boxes.
The "settings" that you mention (Properties and Preferences) are essential to create good quality DVDs. The top sticky post has a Recommended procedure for managing properties and avoiding bugs in Video Studio. I suggest that you start there because it applies to VS7. However, be aware that version 7 had a serious memory leak problem (work-around: save your work a lot) - that is fixed in version 9.
