"Help Topics" drop down not opening in Pro X8

Post by LarryHoward »

Have just upgraded to PaintShop Pro X8 Ultimate per suggestion of Corel. As with prior version (Pro X6), unable to open the "Help Topics" from the drop down from the Help menu. Running the latest Windows 10 on Dell Inspiron.

Honestly, I don't know what to tell you on this one. I saw the same thing for like three days and then it started working. So I'm not sure what causes this.

Does the Corel Guide PDF open for you? Does it matter if you're online or offline? When offline PSP will try to open the local help files usually.

While this doesn't particularly help with the "why" you can just follow and add this bookmark to your browser to access the help files.

Hmmm... I see what you mean. Also nothing when you click on it in X7 as well as X8.

But I wonder if it is just a design flaw and "Help Topics..." is not meant to be an active menu item in itself, but a menu *title* merely introducing the items that follow. The PDF User Guide, after all, is all you really need. And in reality "Help Topics..." itself could probably be deleted...

...Unless anyone else actually gets something when they click on this.

Ken, it's supposed to open up the web version of the Help files. And if you're offline it opens up a local copy in IE (or Edge on Windows 10). So it's meant as an active item and always has. The first time I saw this was with Windows 10 but mine just started working for no reason at all.

I provided a link in the above topic to the help files web address that Help Topics link was supposed to open.

Thanks. I guess I have never noticed since I rely on the PDF file, which I store separately on my computer for various versions... So I have no real idea what might have happened with earlier versions working on earlier versions of Windows.

Thanks in any case for your link, which opens quite nicely in Chrome as well as the MS browsers. Still it's a mystery why that link is missing from Help!

My experience (running Windows 10): If user has Chrome as default browser, the on-line help file will not launch.

Help file will launch if FireFox is user's default browser.

Why this is is above my pay grade.

Haven't tried it with any other browsers, so I don't know if the problem exists with any other browser than Chrome.

OK results of some of my tests with PSP and windows 10
PSP8, X2 X4, X5, X6, X7 all open under Windows 10
Could not get X3 to open at all

For all the Xs mentioned Help > Help Topics works and opened the help topics using IE11. I updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Done on a 2008 Toshiba Laptop M300.
Still have to install PSP X8
Update:
Just installed PSP X8 - no problems
Help > Help Topics opened as normal using IE11
Also opened Microsoft Edge and tried again and again no problems.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Curiously enough, having seen hartpaul's reference to IE11, I opened that browser and closed my usual Chrome. I then went to VS X8.5 and clicked on Help > Help Topics, and this time the Help page opened... in Chrome! I did it a couple of times just to make sure. Nothing has changed on this computer since my above posts.
