Re: x5 freezing and crashing
What sort of video are you editing? Does the problem happen with different types of video or just one? Can you please right click on one of the problem clips in the VS timeline and copy ALL its Properties here or take a screen grab of the Properties box and upload it here as an attachment.

Re: x5 freezing and crashing
I'm having a similar problem where it will just crash and the only option you have it to close out. I'm constantly saving so I don't lose anything. My main clips I'm working with are gifs found off tumblr and put into a sequence. There was one gif that kept giving me an issue so I deleted it and it seemed to fix for a bit but then it returned. Previously, it would constantly crash without me being to do anything so I ended up uninstalling/reinstalling and it fixed although there are still crashes. The latest crash, I didn't have any clips, just a title and it still crashed so hard to kind of pinpoint what is causing it for me.

Hi Ken,
Please see attached screen shot on imgur - http://i.imgur.com/E1wmc0L.png
Often, as was the case during this screen capture I didn't even try to execute any commands other than checking the properties on the file and it crashed.
Thanks,

Hi
Is there any reason why the sample does not contain an audio stream?
Where did you get the sample?
Is the sample the original from a camera without being converted in any way?

Re: x5 freezing and crashing
Hi
Clearly Video Studio does not like the video.
Have you tried adding the clip to the overlay track rather than the top track?
You may need to convert the video something more editable.
if you don’t have a converter try Format Factory, seems to convert most things, take care when installing as it tries to add toolbars/search etc, simply deselect the options other than Format Factory.
If you can upload to a sharing site I will give it a go, One Drive or Google drive work well.

Re: x5 freezing and crashing
Well..........good news, in the main. I have now purchased and installed X8.5 and the content now renders without any real issues. It does still 'falter' a little, when rendering, at one of the points where in x5 would have frozen and crashed (42% through the render) but eventually it carries on to complete the render. The odd thing is that on the finished M2T file there is an audible 'click' at the point at which it falters whilst rendering. I have checked and re-checked the clip and there are no corrupted frames nor any obvious fault with the clip.
In summary, I'm thrilled that things have moved on but a little frustrated that there is still an 'issue'.
I'm grateful for the contributions thus far and I'd love to hear if you have any thoughts on the errant 'click'.
Thanks
Andy

Re: x5 freezing and crashing
Hi Andy
It does appear there is a problem with the original video at that point
Seems a little odd that the render seems to struggle just there?
Maybe duplicate or dropped frames.
Also check the position in Sound Mixer where you can view the sound wave form.

Re: x5 freezing and crashing
An update
I have purchased and installed X8.5 and the problem seems to have mostly gone away (yippee!) although when rendering (especially to M2T) the rendering falters at one of the points at which x5 would have frozen and crashed. This is 42% through the render. Once the video file is rendered there is a fairly loud and explained 'click' in the audio which does not come from the audio track. I have examined each frame of the clip for damage/corruption but all seems fine.
I'm most grateful for all of your responses to date but I would appreciate any thoughts on this latest 'problem.
Thanks,
Andy

X8 render quality
Hi Andy
The problem does appear to be specific to a particular video file.
Or do you have similar problems with other video files.
Please provide details of your video properties.
Right click a clip in the timeline and choose properties.
What are they?..you can create an image of that window to attach to your post.
Go to Settings Preferences, tick Show messages when inserting first video.
Start a new project, inserting your clip should prompt to match the properties, choose yes / ok. Hopefully that will happen.
Share at the top choose Same as First Clip, hopefully that will be available.
Render the clip, does that play ok?
If still a problem, render again but deselect Smart Render?
Otherwise
Can you upload the problem video to a sharing site so we can try to replicate the problem?

Re: x5 freezing and crashing
Hi Trevor
Thanks for your useful suggestions. Video clip properties are;
H264, attributes 24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 16:9. Frame rate shown as 50.000 frames per sec, variable bit rate 26,000 kbps.
Interestingly having followed you instructions the clip (in isolation) renders without a problem. One thing I did notice is that before, when editing, the project was shown as 720 x 576(at the top right of the editing screen) whereas having just set up the render, as you suggested, it now shows the project correctly as 1920 x 1080; this being what the source video was shot in. Could this be the root of my problem?
Thanks again.

Re: x5 freezing and crashing
Hi Andy
Possibly although I would think the frame rate may cause a problem rather than the resolution?
It is best to set the project properties to match your video files properties, hence the Show Messages option via preferences.
Then Share Same as Project properties or Same as First Clip
I notice you are using 50 fps is that 50P or 50I (interlaced.) I assume 50P
If you are intending to burn a disc then you have to use 25fps aka 50i

Thanks so much Trevor.
You're right in that it is 'progressive' rather than interlaced and I burn discs at 25fps.

Andy

Hi Trevor
Just one more thing in this thread, if I may.
I mentioned a previous post that having taken your suggestions the 'problem' clip renders OK in isolation but.......now having included the recalitrant clip back into my project the whole project continues to falter when it gets to that clip and the rendered m2T file still has that audible 'click' a few seconds into it. When I re-render the video file without the clip there is no problem; clearly the fault is in the clip but I just cannot spot the fault. You did kindly offer to take a look at the clip which I have now uploaded to Google Drive. How best can I share this with you?; the file size is 102 MB.
Thanks a lot.
Regards
Andy
