A lot of us have digital video cameras which use SD (or other?) cards, but they are additional to - NOT instead of - a DV mini-cassette. Are you sure that yours does not have a tape? What is the brand and model? The SD cards are normally for still photos taken with the video camera and yes, they can be transferred via USB if your camera has a USB port for that. In my own case (a Canon) the still images are transferred from the card via the Firewire cable, which also transfers the video to the computer.
As for VS being used to capture photos from a digital still camera, I have to ask: why would you bother. Video Studio is, as its name implies, a video editing program. Digital Still Cameras, AFAIK, all come with their own capture programs which are made to work seamlessly with that particular camera. I always use that program and have never even thought of trying it with VS.

what make/model is the dv video cam
I would be very surprised if it can capture 60-minutes (normal 60-min miniDV Tape in SP mode) full resolution dv25 footage to an SD card.
Is it capturing lower resolution/bitrate video
If it's on an SD card, just get an SD Card reader, and do a file transfer. Depending on the codec used for your video captures, VS might not be able to read those videos properly (you might have to install some codecs to get VS to recognize your vids).
