Hi, I have been using PSP for a lot of years now and have never had a problem doing a "save as jpg" while my original image maintained the psp format. I recently upgraded from PSP X4 Ultimate to PSP X7 Ultimate. Now when I try to do a "save as JPG" it tells me it needs to merge all my layers in the original psp image? I hope this makes sense. I have also tried doing save a copy as and it does the same thing.
I recently upgraded my system from Win 7 to Win 10.
I have PSP X4 still installed on my system, also the 32bit and 64bit versions of PSP X7. Whatever made the change affects the save as in PSP X4 now as well.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and would appreciate any help.
Thanks

Re: "save as"
I think you will find PSP is essentially telling you that the format you want to save as (jpeg) does not have layers. What it is going to do is merge the layers of your .psp and save the .jpeg without layers. The program will then switch over to the jpeg image so if you are looking at your layers palette, you will see they are merged. However, your unmerged psp should still be there. I thought that was happening, so just did a test on my system and the original, unmerged psp was there as well as a merged jpeg.
Adverts for Corel products when you close PSP don't bother me.

Re: "save as"
If you have a pspimage loaded and do Save As Jpg then PSP is telling you that it will save the file merged because jpg doesn't support layers. It will also change the name of the image in your workspace to the name you used to save as jpg and change the extension from .pspimage to .jpg in that name. However, you will find that all of the layers are intact and show up in the Layers palette so that you can continue working. HOWEVER, if you do no further work and then close the image it will close and save it - without any prompt - as that jpg image and automatically merge the layers. AND if you do do further work on the layers and then close you will be prompted as to whether you want to save the changes. If you select yes then it will save your changes but also still save the work as the jpg image you last saved it as, merging the layers, and your original PSP file will not have those changes.
However, if you do Save Copy As Jpg then it still tells you the save image will be a merged jpg, but the titlebar of the image on your workspace will not change and you will still be working on the same .pspimage with all layers intact. And if you do further work on it and do a straight Save it will save it as the .pspimage with layers and changes intact.
I find it is usually best to use the Save Copy As option while working on a .pspimage file that I want to also have saved in another format, and continue doing that up to the time I finish the project, do a final Save Copy As then Save As .pspimage using the original .pspimage file name with a sequence number added to indicate it is the copy with the latest work I've done on it.
