PSP X8: Crash occurs when selecting other font types

Post by bernoullis »

Greetings all! I am new on these forums but I have used many of the Paintshop iterations since version 3, when it was JASC shareware (i.e. the original version 3, not version X3). Up until 28 November I had been contentedly using version X7 Ultimate, upgrading to X8 Ultimate due to the advertised improvements.

It was only today that I hit a snag! On one of my multi-layer projects (originally created in PSP X2, but worked on many times since in PSP X7 ...) I selected some already-existing vector text with the Text Tool and then tried to use the Font drop-down list to experiment with a different font type. PSP X8 threw a wobbly by freezing and then producing a pop-up that states: "Corel Paintshop Pro X8 (64bit) has stopped working".

By selecting the 'View problem details' within the pop-up I get an example of this:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Corel PaintShop Pro.exe
Application Version: 18.0.0.1
Application Timestamp: 559e6ac3
Fault Module Name: Corel PaintShop Pro.exe
Fault Module Version: 18.0.0.1
Fault Module Timestamp: 559e6ac3
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00000000001e01f1
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48
Locale ID: 2057
Additional Information 1: eab0
Additional Information 2: eab01c4efea6d18532a4b14e351f9dcf
Additional Information 3: eed2
Additional Information 4: eed295d7de2564c44545a8ff53e2634a
After this, the only options available are to "Check online for a solution and close the program", or just "Close the program"! Selecting the check online option finds nothing, and the program ends up closing anyway!

I thought I would see if there was a similar problem with the co-installed 32-bit version of PSP X8 and sure enough, it does the same thing! I went back and attempted the same process in both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of PSP X7 and was very surprised to find they are now also suffering from this problem! Darn!

It is my suspicion that the installation of PSP X8 has caused this issue, because this has only occurred since then. I have not done any Windows updates or similar such stuff since installing PSP X8, so I am at a loss to otherwise explain it.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem and/or can tell me what the gobbledygook in the 'Problem signature' above really means?

Thanks all!

PS: I have kept both versions of PSP X7 installed until I am more familiar with X8 (and happy that it will work!). Although not copied and pasted here, I assume the 'Problem signature' details will be similar - please let me know if you want to see details from those.

Is the font that you used previously currently installed in Windows? I've run into a similar problem with earlier versions of PSP crashing if I try to load a file without the font being installed first. Usually a message will pop up asking if I'd like to substitute another font. I seem to recall that if I choose anything other than "cancel", PSP will crash.

LindaSue, thanks for the quick response. Yes, the fonts in the drop down list are all installed. It's a baffling problem .....

I have seen the issue you raise, in PSP X7, with a pop-up asking for fonts that are missing for a particular project, but I cannot recall crashes having resulted from it. I just used to find the portable drive with the missing font, plug it in, install the missing font on the laptop drive, reopen PSP and carry on the project as normal!

I wonder if I might have to do a complete uninstall/reinstall of PSP X8 and see what happens? If that alone doesn't work, I'll also uninstall PSP X7 and see what results. In the meantime, if any of you boffins out there have some clues I am all ears .... or eyes!

EDIT: Interesting result! I have uninstalled PSP X8 entirely, including any personal settings, and tried to get the problem to reoccur in PSP X7, using the same project file. It behaves absolutely fine now!

So ........ I have to say that my suspicion of PSP X8 being the culprit seems to be founded. I wonder if I should dare to uninstall PSP X7 entirely, and then reinstall PSP X8 ...... and cross my fingers?

Is anyone else running X7 and X8 on the same machine with Windows 7 Pro? No problems? Hmmmmm ...

I have no solution, but the same thing has happened to me for the past several iterations of PSP. Now, prior to trying different font types, I save my work. When I get to a font type I like, I save my work. And regarding the earlier suggestion, all of the fonts were installed in Windows.
Adverts for Corel products when you close PSP don't bother me.

pdxrjt, despite your problems, I am heartened to know that it isn't just me experiencing this. I'll admit I had no such problems prior to PSP X8. Ho hum ......

All PSP versions install everything in directories separate and apart from all other versions and write their own registry entries (except v.X3 which merged the My PSP files for some strange reason). If you have your PSP versions installed in the default locations chosen by the programs for installing them then there shouldn't be any conflict issues.

I tried to duplicate your problem:
Using PSP X8 64 bit and Win 7 professional-

1. Loaded a jpg image, duplicated the layer twice so I had a "multilayer project"
2. Made the top layer active and typed a word using the text tool.
3. Saved the project as a psp file
4. Reloaded the psp file into X8
5. Made the text layer active and dragged over the word to select it.
6. Used the drop down font list to scroll through different text fonts.

No crash, absolutely no problems, all behaving normally as I expected.

Have you tried resetting your PSP X8 program using the shift key while starting the program up?

The transference of the problem to your X7 versions (like a virus) suggests something system wide rather than just in X8.
I have PSP X8, X2 - X8 installed on my laptop and as already suggested each is an isolated program and independent of the others except in X2/X3 which share the same user saved brushes scripts etc.
The only way their might be some interconnection is where you have changed preferences to direct to another versions saved files.
The fonts are also independent of PSP and are a Windows function. Is there a newly installed font at or near the top of your installed font list that might be causing a problem with PSP - You might be able to go to your windows folder and temporarily remove any different added fonts leaving only the common windows fonts to try and see if one particular font is causing trouble.
