PSP X8 doesn't open .webp files?
For some reason, while the .webp format appears to be supported, PSP X8 gives the error "Unable to open file. Please verify that the file is valid" when attempting to open .webp images saved from the web. Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

Yup, they are valid. They display in Google Chrome, and XNConvert handles them perfectly.

I saved a webp image from PSP. And opened it in PSP. So PSP can handle webp.
Can you provide a link to the images you're having problems with for testing? It may be a bug, or it may be an unsupported feature. Hard to know without knowing more.

Re: PSP X8 doesn't open .webp files?
I often look at, and save, images in Google+ to find colors that I like. Unfortunately this forum won't allow me to attach files in .webp format so I hope this link will work for you as an example: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/phot ... a3d375d4b4. I've also been able to save images from PSP as .webp, and open those images, but it seems PSP can only handle images produce in this way, and that's not very useful. I've also received no response from Corel on this as yet.

Re: PSP X8 doesn't open .webp files?
Alright, I think I've got it. PSP's webp doesn't support transparency. I did two things
1) I used Google's cwebp converter program to convert several files to webp format. The only ones that failed to open inside PSP were the webp images made from PNGs with alpha transparency.
2) I tried to save a webp image with transparency and PSP said the format limited it to a flat image with 8-bit color depth. So PSP does not fully support webp.
Not sure if we want to label that a bug for laziness.

Thanks for your interest and effort, LeviFiction. I appreciate it. I guess I will be using XNConvert a lot.

OK, Corel Support gave me feedback and confirmed that PSP doesn't support .webp files with transparency, and I assume from their email that Corel doesn't plan to.

Re: PSP X8 doesn't open .webp files?
My 64 bit version won't open this file: "Please verify that the file is valid". Same message with 32 bit version and X7. Corel PhotoPaint told me the format was invalid, as did other programs I have, including Photoshop -- although admittedly that was too old a version (CS2) to even know the webp format even existed!
Perhaps not surprisingly, the only program I could get to open it was my Google Chrome browser...
Did you make this using PSP?

Re: PSP X8 doesn't open .webp files?
No, he made it using PhotoLine. He's showing off again. xD
PaintShop pro does not support transparency in the webP format. So there is no way for a transparent webp file to be read in PaintShop Pro or saved from it.
There is, however, a Photoshop plugin for webp if you wanted to try that. I don't know if it supports transparency or not. I don't think it does because it says it only saves to a 24-bit format. http://telegraphics.com.au/sw/product/WebPFormat
It would also be possible to create a script that used Google's own converter to export and import webp if someone wanted that.

Re: PSP X8 doesn't open .webp files?
We shouldn't have to jump thru hoops to open webp files in any version of Corel Paint Shop Pro. This should be a no brainer for Corel to convert webp file automatically upon opening. This scenario reminds me of Microsoft Windows and their insane taking away great tried and true productive functions and introduce useless new functions. Still can give us a basic stretch tool. When a global renowned superpower software company such as Corel a true imaging software company can't figure this out or just doesn't want to. I have purchased PSP since Jasic first brought it out. To this day since Corel took PSP over it is missing some absolute excellent functions that Jasic had. Example, you still cannot delete an opened image file while in the edit module. Jasic gave you a choice to delete an open image file from PSP or from the computer hard drive. Instead, you have close the image and then delete the image only from the hard drive. I refrained to upgrade again until Corel gets it PSP act together. I'll stay with my PSP 2020 forward.

Re: PSP X8 doesn't open .webp files?
I assume you realise you have replied to a 8 year old post.
Using PSP 2023………….
I have opened the Webp image provided above, no problems there.
I was also able to save as Webp and retain the transparency.
Whilst the webp image was open, I accessed the files location on my hard drive to delete the file.
Webp still open in PSP I can close choosing to save or not to save.
I did not find a way to remove/close the image from PSP and delete from HD in one go.
