Looking to buy new computer for Pro X6 - any recommendations

Post by jim5150jvc »

I just joined this forum. I am currently using an old 2004 Dell GX280 Optiplex for video editing. I'm wayyyyy overdue to upgrade :) I just do video editing as a hobby. My parents had a bunch of their old Super 8 film converted to digital, and I've been editing it to post the clips on family's Facebook pages, burning DVDs of them to send to non-computer using relatives, etc. Nothing really fancy.

Of course video processing with my old dinosaur has been really sllloooowww. While researching a new computer to upgrade, I notice there's a lot of gaming computers-I have absolutely no interest in gaming, but would those types of computers be good for video editing as well? One that caught my eye was the ABS Dreadnought ALA001 I liked the price, only $500.

So any recommendations? I could go as high as $1000 or a little more. But it would be nicer to get by on something like that ABS that caught my eye.

Like I said, I have no interest in gaming or streaming HD movies off the internet. Just want something I can do video editing and cd burning QUICKLY.

First I suggest you go on the Corel web site, look for VideoStudio and print out the "System Requirements". This is the minimum requirement for your new PC to run VS X8. Use this list to chose your PC or give it to your Dealer (as I did) to create a PC for the job.
Now I know you said X6 but IMO it would be worth going for X7 or, preferably, X8 as there is so much more editor for your money. Go for Pro as Ultimate would be too much at this stage. The basic VS X8 Pro program is the same in both cases but the Ultimate gives you a few more add-ons which you may not need yet.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

I'd go with Terfyn, upgrade to X8, as X6 may not work well with Win 10 on a new pc.

The processor from my searching appears to be equivalent to a 3rd generation i3 from intel. I'd look for at least an i5 or an i7 if you are going up in price. (sorry not sure what the amd equivs are)
I'd opt for more ram, doubling that to 16gb wouldn't cost an awful lot more. Just looking at ABS the stalker looks more like what you need to be aiming at and comes in on your max budget. Gaming pc's tend to have top end graphics cards which we don't really need, so going slightly lower on that would mean slightly more ram.

I would go for the most powerful computer my money can buy. Getting the "minimum" spec'ed computer means that the program will run, but usually not smoothly. Also, the faster the computer horsepower (CPU), the faster the rendering and exporting. Burning to DVD is really a matter of the speed of the DVD burner and not the computer.

If you are going to get a computer with Win10, try to install X6 on it to see if it works. It might. IF not, then time to upgrade as others have posted. Ultimate brings more "bling" to the editing game, something that many need, and for some, they don't. It's like a tool box. You might not always be using a certain tool for something you are working on, but IF you need it, or the job requires it, it is there.
The $$$ value is with the Ultimate, and opens the door to more creativity.
