Video loses quality after rendering VS Pro X8

Post by whivarez »

Hello!
I tried making a music video for sharing on Youtube with VS Pro X8 but the video loses the quality after rendering. It looks grainy especially in dark scenes. I don't know what went wrong. This problem never happened when I used VS Pro X6. Is there any solutions/ways that I can try to fix this problem? Or should I make a new video with Pro X6 instead?
Thank you in advance for your help!
P.S. I'm a novice at video editing.

Hi
And welcome to the forums.
You do not give any details regarding your original video files, Please place a clip on the timelines, right click and choose properties, what are they?
You can take a screenshot of that window to create a jpeg image, upload as attachment to your post, attachment details at bottom of post.

Your original video if played on your media player full screen does it look ok in the dark areas.
Video Studio does not normally affect the brightness or colours, enough to worry about, unless you have applied filters etc?

What options did you choose when creating the file for youtube.
You are best to create the video file first where you can play to test quality before uploading to YT.

Hi lata! Thanks so much for your prompt reply and sorry for my English. The videos I use for making this music video are from the different episodes of a TV show so I'll attach few screenshots here.

About your questions:-

-When creating the file for YT, I tried a lot of options - mp4 (all hd options), avi, wmv but the video loses the quality as I mentioned before. So I tried choosing "Same as project settings" and opened the video with Window media player. It looks okay in the dark areas though it looks bad on VLC and KMP. FYI, I haven't applied any filters on the videos.

-Normally I created the file before uploading to YT.

Thank you!

Hi

VLC Media Player seems to play most video formats and if that shows quality problems then I would assume the problem is your files not the program.
The video files are using 24 fps, you should set the project properties to match your video file.

Go to Preferences (F6) set Show Messages…………
Start a new project
Add one of your files to the top timeline, hopefully the program will recognise your properties and prompt you to match the project properties.

Now try Share Create Video File Same as Project Properties or Same as First Clip.
The quality should be as good as the originals.

You do have options to add FX filters, Auto Exposure and Auto Levels may help
Overdoing filters may impact on quality, render times will increase

Just to give a little more detail, since you say you are new to video editing, when the Preferences dialogue box opens, the first tab is labelled General. Look down the list to about halfway till you see an empty box beside the words "Show message when inserting first video clip into the Timeline". Tick the box. Then proceed as Trevor outlined above. Just remember, though, that it only works for the first clip in a new project.

Hi lata and Ken!
I'll try following your advice and will get back to you soon. Does the problem have anything to do with my laptop which is pretty old for the new software? Anyway thank you for your time!

Hi

Are you using the trial version of Video Studio X8.

The trial version is a cut down version, very much so, seriously messed up, I don't know what problems you would have with your video files.

I would use X6 to edit your video files.

If you can provide a sample of your video files, upload to a sharing site, maybe DropBox or One Drive.
We will see if they work with the purchased version.

You could of course purchase the program and run for a while and if not satisfied ask for your money back.

I also wonder what is going on, and like Trevor, imagine it could be something screwed up if it is the trial versions of X8. Your Project Properties are showing that they are supposed to be DV/AVI in the general Profile label in your second photo, yet the actual Properties are showing correctly as high def mpeg-4. That would account for the error message since DV/AVI is standard def with a maximum frame size of 720 x 576 (PAL) and 720 x 480 (NTSC). So VS cannot implement that confused command to produce a DV/AVI video with those properties!

Can you confirm that you actually did start a new project, and only then inserted one of the mpeg-4 files in the timeline to get the message about matching Project Settings?

And if the mpeg-4 was the first video in the timeline, did you see whether, by clicking the downward arrow beside "Same As Project Settings", another choice was active: "Same As First Clip". If it is there, could you try that too?

Yes I'm using the trial version. Sorry I forgot to mention earlier. I'll try making this project with X6 and will get back with the outcome. Hope there's no problem with it. I'll probably purchase X8 after buying a new computer. It seems like my laptop is too old for this version. X6 is fine at the moment and maybe I'll try using other programs too :)

Thank you.

Dear Ken,
I'm using a trial version and yes I did start a new project and followed Trevor's instructions by going to Preferences, ticking the box "Show message when inserting first video clip into the Timeline" and then I inserted one of the mp4 files and clicked OK when the program asked to match the project properties. After that I added five more files with the dark scenes/areas to the timeline to check the quality of the video after rendering but could not proceed as the error message shown.

The mp4 was the first video in the timeline but I didn't click the downward arrow beside "Same As Project Settings" I will try again and will get back to you.
Thank you!

Hi

Using the trial version does not let us set mprg4 as project properties, because of the limitations of the Trial we can only use DV-Avi and standard Definition sizes.

That makes it difficult to test HD 1920 x 1080 with any certainty of getting good results.

Try the process of Show messages when using X6.

I'm sorry but that is another limitation of the trial version! Just shows what a silly decision Corel made to cripple so many basic functions...

LOL that's okay. That means as of now I should stick to X6.
Thank you so much for your help. Really appreciate it :)
