Can't import projects from vsx6 Ultimate to VSX8.5 Ultimate

To reiterate Trevor's point about the Haali Media Splitter being OK, it is required to enable VS's new ability to handle the Matroska format .mkv, which has become a very popular high quality way of encoding video into a smaller size footprint. VS has in the past not been able to edit .mkv footage, but now it can, which is great progress for more than a few users (including me!)

Hi Ken, I'm not having any luck with mkv format in X8.5. The program won't play any clips with that format. Do I need to tweak a configuration on the program? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Glenn

I didn't do anything special to play the variety of MKV videos I have in my collection. Only Haali seemed to be necessary -- though I already had that on my system as it seems to come as part of VLC media player, which will also play MKV... I guess you could try installing VLC to get its version, but I wouldn't have thought there was any significant difference.

Really? I have VLC and yes, they mkv files play on that. I'll see about Haali. Thanks for the quick reply.

Ken, I notice that when I insert an mkv file to the timeline, the clip preview will work sometimes, but the project preview shows only a rainbow of colors and doesn't play. Would these symptoms indicate anything special to do?

Nothing that I can think of, I'm afraid. Part of the problem may be that mkv is, like mov or even avi, only a wrapper extension which can wrap or contain a wide variety of formats. As I say, I have some quite varied mkv clips and they all play in X8.5. But there are probably or undoubtedly some out there which will not.

Ken, you're absolutely spot on. I checked several other mkv files and they all play fine. So far it looks like one bad batch. I'll do a bit of conversion with handbrake and see if they then work on X8. Thanks for the good advice.
