resize

Post by grandmaonce »

I am a new user and have a question. A friend asked me to resize a photo so she can have a canvas print made of it at her local Costco. When I have the photo open and use the resize option it tells me it is 72 ppi and would print out at 4.71 w and 3.14 h. She wants to have a 30" x 30" canvas print done. I don't think it is possible to resize it so she could have that done. Is that even possible?

What version of PSP are you using?

Yes it is possible, but care needs to be taken. First this appears to be a very small image and the end dimensions don't have the same aspect ratio.

I estimate the pixels to be about 339w x 226h Is this correct?

That is a very small number of pixels. You would have to either, upscale the image (which makes the image look blurry and ugly) or you have to print at a very low resolution to make the image show up. We always recommend away from upscaling by huge amounts. And this would be a huge amount of upscaling. But if you don't upscale then the resolution has to come down to just 10 pixels per inch. That might make the image unrecognizable.

Now, as for the aspect ratio. I estimate that to be 2:3. But a 30"x30" is a 1:1 aspect ratio. Since the Width and Height are different, if you try to force them both to be 30" it'll stretch and squash the image. If they don't care, then no problem. But if they do then some edits will have to be made to make the W and H equal before resizing. This can be as simple as adding a border or complicated in a way I can't think of. xD

So, to do this kind of resizing you can use the Resize Dialog's Print Size options.

In Versions X7 and older the resize dialog has a small area at the top for "Print Dimensions" what you want to do is change the resolution to anything between 200-300 ppi. This will increase the Pixels but the Print H and W will stay the same. Next change those to 30" x 30" and look at the new pixel size. You can see how many pixels are needed to make this printable. hit "OK" to accept the resize and look at the result. Will it work?

In Version X8 select the button for 'By Print Size" and again change the resolution to something higher to make it printable. Then change the W and H of the final print. And Hit OK.

Be careful about taking too much notice of the numbers in the Resize dialogue boxes. They often lie!!! They can be leftover figures from a previous edit.
To find out for sure the actual details of the photo open it and click on the Image Information icon.

If the end product is to be square then the first step may be to crop to a square format. Of course you lose what is cropped out but it is preferable to make that decision than to have a distorted image. As LeviFiction says, the size of the starting point is a real challenge in this instance.
