Can't import title to timeline or library

Post by rkstudio »

I made a video?, of a title to use with different videos but I can't seem to bring it into the timeline or the library. I saved the file in a folder on my hard drive and a file in my projects, but I tried to insert it into the timeline...that didn't work. Then I tried to insert it to the library...that didn't work. I got an error message that said, "the title clip is on editing", whatever that means. Weird statement! Also, the title clip was not "on editing"...whatever that means.
So the last thing I tried, which is an option I didn't see at first is the "Insert subtitle". But then, yet another problem. It says, "All the title clips inside the range of the movie subtitle file will be removed" Do you want to continue?"
I read that statement about 10 times and I can't make heads or tales of it. I don't know what it is that I'm supposed to do to use a title file that I created. I saved it in the two different places that I stated earlier but I can't get them into VS.

Anyway, I have tried everything I can to get that clip onto my movie but it doesn't work. Please help!!!

I just went back into it and tried to click "open' in the dialog box, didn't work. tried to click and drag...didn't work. I have so many problems with VS, I'm beginning to think I have a lemon copy of it. I never had so many issues with a program before. I'm spending more time in these forums and trying to fix problems than I am working on my videos.

Well, you told us a lot about what you tried, but you told us absolutely nothing about the format of the title, nor how you prepared it, or more to the point what you prepared it in. What is its format/properties? What program did you use to prepare it? And what are the Project Properties of the project which you want to insert it into?

Ok, first of all I'm not an expert with this program so I don't even know how to check the properties of the title file. the format of the file? I don't even know what that means. The way I prepared it was I opened VS, opened a project, selected "T" for title, prepared all my text, saved it to my hd and as a project just in case I saved it wrong, I did it two ways so that VS didn't bury the file somewhere that I can't find it. So then for some reason the title disappeared from the preview window so then I clicked "file", "insert media file to timeline", then "Insert subtitle", then I got the error message. Also, it didn't load anything, anywhere.
Also, I remember the file extension was .srt, if I'm not mistaken, if that's what you mean by which format.

Well I just watch a couple of youtube videos to try to get some answers and what I've learned is that you can't make a title without using one of the preset title images or animations. I assumed that you can just make a title from scratch with either your own background design or no background. I would rather, though, have to freedom to make a title on my own without being forced to use VS pre-made designs.

The file format is .srt and the open with option is Windows shell something. So I changed it to VS, but that didn't work either.

IMO you would need to render your title sequence into a video that VideoStudio can accept. You can't easily stick some letters over a picture and hope for the best, that is why VS gives you the tools to make titles in the editor.

First you do not need to use a pre-set as you can just write a title. Second there are additional titles and fonts supplied free in the Do More section. You can overlay a title on video or a still photo. Finally there a number of tutorials to show, for example, how to do a StarWars title.

Perhaps if you tell us the effect you want, we can help.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

First of all - you can make a title from scratch - yourself - no need to use any presets at all

just click on the 'T' - then double click in the preview screen and start typing

No need to specifically 'save' a title you have just created -- just use your cursor to drag the title from the title timeline into the 'titles' library - there it will create a copy of the title so that you can drag it back down into as many different projects as you want to

Hello Brian,

Thank you! Now I'm getting somewhere. I did that and it saved to the library. I don't know why VS has two different ways to save the file, including specifically saying "Save subtitle file" in the options section. That's very misleading.

The only problem I have now is that I dragged and saved the title to an empty space with the other pre-designed titles and it was there but there was an animation that went into it! I didn't make it with an animation. but no matter how many times I try, it keeps applying an animation. I don't get it.

Thanks.

It's a funny thing. I thought this was going to take about 15 minutes to do. That was about 3 hours ago and it's still not fully working. I'll have to continue this tomorrow.

the subtitle save is for a specific use - you do not use it for normal titles

TRY this - with the title in the timeline - double click on it to open it's properties panel - it has two tabs - by default it opens at the 'Edit' tab - but just to the right of that is an 'attribute' tab - click on that

now look at the left end of that panel - under the word 'animation' is a check box next to 'Apply' - I think that will be checked - uncheck it and try your title again

have a look at this video of mine - where I create a title from scratch and then apply some animation

Brian, THANK YOU!!!

I didn't even know you can double click on a clip to bring up it's properties. I never read anywhere that you can do that. Well that fixed my problem completely. All I'm trying to do is make some drawing demo videos for my YT channel and use basically the same titles without having to create them over and over. Now this gets me over that hurdle. For now I'm VS impaired but soon I'll get it wrapped around my brain.

Thanks again very much!

Brian,

I just saw your video. Very simple to understand. Tomorrow I'm going to look at more of them. I need to learn as much as I can. I'm also going to share them with the buttons, facebook, reddit and so on. Also, I really like the song that was on it.

I appreciate your help!

Bob
