Trouble burning BD
Hello.
Thanks for all the work you put into this forum. It has been helpful in the past. I write because I am getting a bit desperate. As detailed in my various posts, I am trying to archive family videos from VHS, Hi 8, Digital 8, Super 8, and HD to a single format, blu ray. For better or worse, I chose this format because it was the most accessible format for family members ages 9-83 that didn't leave me handing out a large stack of DVDs.
I finished the VHS project, burning a total of 21 dual layer blu ray discs (project was 7 discs with 3 copies) with about 8 hrs each of captured video... no problems. I then captured the Hi 8 and started the same process. After burning 3 blu ray discs, I started to have trouble in and haven't had success since June or July. I have approached this from a number of angles... so many I'm starting to forget what I tried. I've made lots of changes to various settings. I upgraded my USB hub. I recently upgraded from X5 to x8. Most recently I tried making an iso file from my vsp file on X8. I got an error message when I used the windows burner utility. I downloaded ImgBurn (along with some junkware) and still had no luck with the iso.
Unless you have any suggestions, I had an idea I hoped you could help with. I have copies of the BDs with VHS on them. I also have copies of the first three BDs with the Hi 8 video on them. Is there a way to use these discs to figure out what workflow will work? Unfortunately, I learned how to make a custom templates AFTER I started having problems, but I have X5 vsp files for these projects too although I don't think I saved the chapters.
I supposed it's possible that my ASUS BD burner is bad. I can't remember the last time I burned a BD... probably June. I have some files on my HD Handycam I could burn if you haven't any other ideas. I successfully burned DVDs last month.
Thanks in advance for your patience. I'm trying to get these videos ready for Christmas.

Re: Trouble burning BD
I can't offer any specifics on a work flow I'm afraid - but one thought struck me while reading your post
I have an excellent Epson Photo scanner which steadfastly refuses to work properly through a USB hub of any sort - throwing all sorts of odd errors - yet anything else plugged into the hub works without problem.
I have changed and upgraded hubs to no avail - BUT - if I plug the scanner direct into one of the USB ports on the computer it woks 100% flawlessly and produces perfect scans with never a hiccup of any kind,
have you tried plugging the BD burner direct into your computer.

Re: Trouble burning BD
This occurred to me as well and I believe I tried it. However, it doesn't hurt to try again.
Thanks Brian.

Re: Trouble burning BD
This answer relates as much to your workflow as anything else. But I can't help but note you say you tried making the iso from your vsp file -- I assume directly. But have you tried first rendering the vsp file into a new video in either BD format (which can be either transport stream mpeg2 or AVCHD) and then using that to make the ISO? You can then of course view the new file directly to see if everything is correct in it before committing it to disc. Or conversely, if you have trouble making a new video, it will at least suggest that there is something wrong with one or more of the clips in the project.Eich wrote:Most recently I tried making an iso file from my vsp file on X8. I got an error message when I used the windows burner utility. I downloaded ImgBurn (along with some junkware) and still had no luck with the iso.
Is there any specific reason you were trying to make an ISO by the way, instead of a BD Folder. IIRC the ability to actually make a BD ISO only came with X8. Before that, it was only a BD Folder you could make. And that is the option I have continued to use. The inbuild module in VS will not, of course, burn a folder to disc, but programs like the Nero and Roxio suites will do so, as does ImgBurn. And of course more software media players can play a folder directly than they can an ISO without first mounting it.
I couldn't help but also noticing you say the earlier BDs you successfully burned had 8 hours of video on them. Can you then confirm that you actually burned them as *video* BDs, as opposed to *data* BDs... If so, you must have adjusted the burning properties right down in terms of the bitrate used to make sure the original bitrate of the captured VHS etc didn't get up-converted to high def type bitrates and thus make much larger files which would allow less video to be burned to disc -- even though I note you used dual layer BDs.
By the way, have you updated X8 with the hotfix and SP which make it X8.5? While this might not resolve this particular problem, it might conceivably help nonetheless...
Again, it was another little reference in your explanation above that made me wonder about this: "I got an error message when I used the windows burner utility." If I understand things correct, the disc burning utility built into Windows can only produce data discs, and not proper *video* BDs i.e. though you can burn video clips to a disc, they are treated by Windows the same way as they would documents or music etc. As I understand it, some Blu-Ray stand-alone players might detect video clips on a data disc and play them. But that doesn't make the disc a video disc.

Re: Trouble burning BD
Hello Ken.
Unfortunately, I continue to change my workflow to try to get this to work again. I have tried so many iterations that I have trouble remembering what I have tried. I have taken your (and Trevor's advice) and rendered m2t files. I then load this into the Blu ray Burning module: In order to save chapters added in the blu ray module, I will then save this as a vsp file: I have tried to burn a blu ray disc from this workflow, but I let it run for at least 48 hrs and it stops at multiplexing after the menu is made although the clock keeps running. I considered this a failure, so I tried creating blu ray folders. This completed successfully. However, I could not find the file. This stems from my own inexperience/stupidity. I ran it again after I saw your post about the iso files. I only tried the iso files because the blu ray files seemed to fail. I did not realize that the windows burner would only make data files, not movie blu ray discs. I deleted Imgburn and anything that came with it due to concerns over security. I created the blu ray folders again, but I'll admit I'm not sure what to do with this or even where to find it. X8 tells me where it should be. I look there and see this: Perhaps you can help me from here.
Maybe this will answer my question and yours. I placed one of the three successful Hi8 project blu ray discs in a drive and it looks like this: So here's another stupid question... how can I tell this is a blu ray movie disc and not a blu ray data disc? The discs I have been making will run in a standard BD player.
I can't add a fifth attachment, but let me know if it would be helpful to add an image of one of the VHS project blu ray discs.
I am currently using VS version 18.5.0.25.

Re: Trouble burning BD
The BDMV folder in your Documents Library image is in fact, together with the CERTIFICATE folder, the BD Folder, and it is a video one. If you open the BDMV folder, it contains a number of sub-folders, one of which is called STREAM, and it contains video clips labelled (unhelpfully) 00000.m2ts, 00001.m2ts and so on.
This is the same structure you found on that BD disc you put in the drive. Its STREAM folder again contains files called by exactly the same names (00000.m2ts etc) but of course containing different video.
This in turn gives you a useful warning. Each time you make a BD folder, it will make a BDMV folder (and CERTIFICATE) and overwrite the previous one unless you move them to another appropriately labelled folder e.g. VHS, Hi8 ...
Why did you remove ImgBurn? It is quite safe -- you just need to carefully read each page of the installation process to avoid it installing other unwanted things, which apparently was what worried your first time round. I assume you don't have Nero, Roxio, Ashampoo Burning Studio or other commercial disc burning program... Anyway, with ImgBurn, when burning your folders to disc make sure it is set to UDF 2.5.

Re: Trouble burning BD
OK. That clarifies things a bit. I WAS doing something correct when I started this Hi8 project. I still don't know where I went wrong although I still wonder about a bad burner.
I found that I DO have a copy of Roxio Creator Premier. Unfortunately, I could not figure out how to burn a new BD without starting a new project in the Roxio format. I could not find a place to input the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders. Instead, I again tried to burn a blu ray using the iso file since this software will do that for me. Unfortunately, I got an error which means very little to me: The Roxio will also let me "easily" copy a disc. I might try copying one of the Hi8 project BDs to see if the burner will burn it.
An alternative is to upload IMGBurn again. Would I be using this to make a BD from an iso file or from the BDMV/CERTIFICATE files? I'm leery of using this because I got a blue screen of death with a memory dump... I've never seen one of those before. I thought I was careful when I was going through the menus, but at least one new search program was loaded. It kept trying to change my default browser window and my security software got all excited.

Re: Trouble burning BD
I tried to make a copy of the one of my Hi8 BDs and found out my internal read-only BD drive is physically jammed. I probably have my children to thank for this. The gear teeth are our of sync. Pardon my terminology, but the spindle platter rises to engage a disc when the drive is open and visa versa. I may try to fix this later. Needless to day, I tried something else.
I again downloaded IMGburn. No malware this time as far as I can tell. Everything seemed to be working. I used the following link to get it done:
http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides/dvdrip ... ng-imgburn
Things seemed to be going well then I got the following error: I had the following log, if helpful:

I again downloaded IMGburn. No malware this time as far as I can tell. Everything seemed to be working. I used the following link to get it done:
http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides/dvdrip ... ng-imgburn
Things seemed to be going well then I got the following error: I had the following log, if helpful:

Re: Trouble burning BD
No real idea what any of those logs really mean. But I see you had done everything correctly, including the UDF 2.5, up to the point where writing was supposed to start. So I can only surmise that you are correct and that this was a burner problem. I see that it may have been trying to use maximum speed for burning. That can cause some problems and setting a lower burning speed often helps in those situations. I think ImgBurn has a speed setting you can change...

Re: Trouble burning BD
SUCCESS!!!
I replaced my ASUS drive with a neat little clam shell Pioneer drive and have burned 7 new BDs already, 2 copies from the first batch of Hi8 tapes and 5 from the second batch of tapes. My workflow is as follows:
-compile/edit the captured files in x5 and save as .m2t (AVCHD, 10000 kbps) I'm using X5 because the files are already easily accessible and labelled
-make a .vsp file in x8 with chapters and save to Blu Ray file. I tried to burn and got the 5:0:0 error
-use Imgburn to make the discs. I had an error when I tried to batch burn them. When I burn separately, there is no problem.
I don't think the entire issue was the drive since I still couldn't burn with X8, but the process works and will suffice for now. Thanks for your help. I'm not sure how we could have picked up that the drive was a big part of the problem earlier, but it doesn't matter now. I don't know why I could burn DVDs without problem.
A few questions...
I've got a lot of junk files saved from this process and I am deleting them. Why is there a upd file with most m2t files? I assume I can delete these in pairs.
Is there a way to get x5 vsp files to be recognized by x8? I was a bit surprised I was not prompted to delete X5 when I loaded x8, but I'm glad I didn't, at least for now.
Thanks again for the help and patience,
Rich

Re: Trouble burning BD
The upd files are just a little file created in association with the m2t file. Personally I simply don't know what they're for, but they certainly can be deleted.Rich wrote:I've got a lot of junk files saved from this process and I am deleting them. The X5 vsp files should already be recognizable by X8. Have you tried? If so, and if they don't open, do you get an error message. VSP files are forward compatible i.e. later versions of VS can open earlier version VSPs. But earlier versions -- only up to three back -- can only open VSPs made by a later version when it is saved in the earlier version format. Moreover, functions in the later version (filters etc) which were not available in the earlier version, will not be there when opened in the earlier version. Is there a way to get x5 vsp files to be recognized by x8?
