Relink problems
Every time I turn around, I have relink problems. I don't know if it's my computer or what but so many times I have an error message that says my video isn't linked. Can someone tell me why there are so many issues with that? Is it a bug with VS6? It's a real pain because I don't know how to relink a video. I have used many photo programs over the years and never had a problem with a program not finding a photo. When I find a photo file, I select open with and select a program to open it and it opens. But for some reason, in VS6, there are relink problems about 50 percent of the time.

Re: Relink problems
I do save my videos on my external hd, but I have no choice because my computer hd is almost full. Does it really matter that i save them on an external hd?
I never had an issue with saving files in other programs.

Re: Relink problems
It doesn't matter that you're using an external drive. I do it all the time. But what you need to know is that an external drive doesn't always have the same drive letter. It may start off as, say, G:\ but later you don't have it plugged in and instead plug in another USB stick or external drive, and Windows calls it G:\ as well. Then, when you plug in your first external drive, this time Windows calls it H:\...
The problem that when you then reopen VS and your project, it is looking for the files on G:\ And they're no longer there. So it asks you to relink, so you then need to go to H:\...
So when using an external drive with VS, you have to remember the original drive letter and know also how to use Disk Management in the Admin Tools of Windows Control Panel to reassign the original drive letter to the external drive if it has changed... or learn how to relink!

Re: Relink problems
External hard drives need to be configured in Windows so that they have a fixed drive letter - if you just plug an external storage device in and let it do it's own thing is often picks up different drive letters - which changes the path from Videostudio to the file - so set a permanent drive letter for your hard drive and the relink problem should eventually go away
When Videostudio says it needs to relink it is simply telling you it doe not have the correct path to the video file
relinking is easy - when you get the error message you also have a button in there with the word 'Relink' on it - click on it and a 'Browse' window will open and you just browse to the file being indicated by the relink error window - select it - and click OK - 99 times out of a hundred you will then get a message that ALL clips have been relinked
if some do not relink then you just do those individually

Re: Relink problems
Thank you Brian and Ken.
I understand it better now. When I plug in my ext. hd, it always assigns drive letter F... it never changes, unless I plug it into my small notebook, then it's drive letter E. But I use that computer for things other than VS.
I'll just have to keep track of where exactly the video is being saved to. I'm not really that organized with file keeping. I need to consolidate my files and write down the folder that the files are in.
Also, I now know more about relinking in case I loose track of where the video is.
Thanks again!
