PaintShop X8 Trial blank window

Post by petrvo »

Hi, I installed PaintShop X8 trial on my computer in order to evaluate it.

When I start PaintShop X8 I'm asked for email address. I enter the address, press the Register button and I receive (yet another) email about product registration. Then the content of the window turns white, there are no controls and I can only close the window.

I found an article on Corel web site describing how to solve the same problem occurring with VideoStudio X7. I tried to rename folder Messages in %appdata%\corel, to no avail. I also deleted %appdata%\corel, uninstalled PaintShop and installed it again; to no avail.
http://howto.corel.com/en/dc/VideoStudi ... ank_window

Can you please give me some hint?

System information: Windows 10 x64, latest patches, Intel Core i7-4771, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970, Avast Antivirus.

If anyone at COREL reads this post: I created a ticket 5 days ago, no one got back to me. On day 4 I created another ticket asking for someone to get back on my original ticket. Still no answer, except ticket confirmation emails. Let me say, as prospective customer, that your support services are of poor quality.

No one at Corel will read your email, I'm afraid. Moreover, it has been longstanding Corel policy not to provide tech support for trial versions, silly as that might sound!

It's long standing Corel policy not to take the customer too seriously. Buy the product, report a big problem, get the "bumped to development crew" (or something like that) and hear nothing after that because your money is theirs by then. That was my experience with X4 and X7, so no more Corel for me.

Gentlemen, that doesn't sound very encouraging. I'm currently using Nikon NX 2 Capture and I was about to try PaintShop X8 since it supposedly offers better tools. But if PaintShop X8 doesn't even start on my PC and the manufacturer provides no support I will have to look for another alternative :(

That's an interesting statement.
Not completely true, although Corel are somewhat lax when it comes to solving problems.
You can always ask for your money back (within 30 days of purchase that is).
Of course to find out if a user likes to buy a program, that user will first download a trial and try it out for 30 days, no?

If you aren't using Corel products, is this just a visit to post comments?

I have been using PaintShop Pro since before 2000 and although there are some niggles now and then, I prefer the program to any other.
Yes have tried Photoshop and didn't like it at all, so saved myself a lot of money.
It all depends on what you use a program for.
Most users appear to look for that one button that does everything ..

Joelle, I've used PSP since Jasc, version 3.11/3.12. Corel versions X, X2, X3, X4 and X7 all gave problems one way or the other, but usually not too huge, workarounds or do without, though it took me 6 months, yes months, to get X4 to work. I finally bought X7 this past June, experienced problems, contacted Corel, and got the "development team" bump up. So naturally I thought/expected something to happen, nada. Then 30 days go by fast, and guess what? Right.
If you took the trouble to look at my posts in this forum, you would know that I try to help people with PSP. So with all due respect, shove it, please.
I'm still trying to get X7 to do what it's supposed to do, without Corel's help because, as I said, it got bumped to the team and after that nada.
I believe new potential customers deserve the warning that as long as it works it's a worthwhile product, but CustServ is far below par. That's all, Corel drops the ball.

Slechte manieren maken een mens niet populair.

Veel geluk met X7.

Bad manners don't make a person popular? May I be so bold as to ask what bad manners and whose bad manners you're talking about?

And as far as X7 is concerned, reported in June, bumped to the geniuses of the development team (according to the contact). So yes, instead of trusting Corel to fix that real well documented problem kicked up by their own "customer service" intern, I should have demanded my money back when I discovered it and gone from there. And it's now Friday the thirteenth of November. May I be a bit angry? PSP is not freeware, so when essential functions don't work -functions that worked in earlier versions, I may add- and they don't fix them yet keep my money, I get a bit angry.

It's a great product, value for money, when it works, even if you need to work around little quirks. But when essential functions just stop working from one version to the next and they do nothing, I don't need to be popular, I'd rather have money in the bank.

UPDATE: The problem is solved.

After some deeper checking I found that the missing content of the window is actually a web content rendered by mshtml.dll. The content was loaded properly but was not displayed for some reason.

This solved my problem:

- Run PowerShell, unlock application files by running the following commands:
gci C:\ProgramData\Corel | unblock-file -whatif
gci "C:\Users\[your account]\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro" | unblock-file -whatif
gci C:\Users\[your account]\AppData\Roaming\Corel | unblock-file -whatif
gci "C:\Users\[your account]\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro" | unblock-file -whatif
gci "C:\Users\[your account]\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro" | unblock-file -whatif

Where [your account] is the directory name corresponding to your account name.

- Open Internet Options from Control Panels. Go to Advanced tab, press Reset button in Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

I'm not sure whether the first step is necessary. I guess the MSIE Protected Mode might be to blame; the second steps turns if off.

I've seen the problem with blank window on PaintShop startup reported repeatedly on different sites. I hope the information above might help someone.

Hi,

I had the same problem, wrote to the customer support, and - You won't believe it! - I received an answer after some days! (Basically the same thing with resetting internet explorer).

So maybe the customer support isn't as bad as you thought :)

Good for you, but they didn't react to my ticket for 11 days (and counting). That's a miserable service by my standards. I also work in IT and I don't even want to imagine the reaction of our management if support department didn't react to a ticket for 11 days. Most likely it would involve apologizing to the customer, offering discount, and someone at the support dept losing bonuses or even getting fired.

But on the positive side: now that I can run PaintShop X8 I must say it's a nice piece of SW. I didn't have much time to test it but so far I'm impressed. Compared to Nikon NX 2 Capture which I was using for quite some time: PaintShop has content aware tools such as Magic Fill, adjustments are quite advanced, edits are so much better. Also interface and help is simply better. I will buy PaintShop at the end, hoping that I will never ever need any support from Corel :D

I think I agree that the first step may not be necessary. Coincidentally, I was having an identical problem with installing Video Studio, a sister product of PSP, when I saw this thread. Although I have not used IE in many, many years, I thought I would try simply resetting IE. And it worked!

Wow, you won't believe. Corel Customer Support got back to me on my case. After merely 42 days. They told me to reset MSIE settings to defaults, which actually solves the issue, as previously discussed.

I can't comment on the 42 days since that wouldn't go without some heavy sarcasm.
