Moving clips on the timeline

Post by Thordell »

On my other Video editing programs I can right click and hold down to drag the clip to the right and move it away from the clip to it's left, Corel doesn't appear to allow you to do this unless I'm not doing it right.

I know the few times you want to do it is small but I miss the opportunity, another thing, the times I go to use the left and right direction keys to go along one frame at a time sends it to the end of the clip.

If there is a way to do these moves I would love to know.

Why do you want to do this? A video must be created by a number of clips being streamed together so the VS philosophy is to make the Main Timeline a continuous flow.
If you want to insert a clip (or a black graphic to give a black gap) it can be done by dragging the clip into the join between two clips on the Timeline.
I know that Pinnacle Studio and some others allow this but, when I have used PS, it annoys me that I have to butt the clips together on the Timeline.

When you buy a program, you have to accept the philosophy of the planners and programmers. To me the VS approach seems logical and straightforward.

You're right Terfyn, why do I want to do this, I don't really it's that I just go to do it automatically as I can do it on my other programs and it feels odd when it doesn't move.

I can get on perfectly alright with it how it is, just feels odd that it's not there, But I would like to be able to move along the clip or timeline one frame at a time with the keyboard, but I guess it's just not there.

I must say I'm getting on fine with this now, I was all sixes and sevens with it at first, thing is I never like change, with my Serif MoviePus I could work so fast I knew what I wanted and where it was, one thing I know Corel can't do and that is in Serif, you can highlight a clip, click on "Fit" and you can select a portion of the clip and zoom up to say a part of someones face or something someone is holding.

VS has 2 ways to move by single frame on the timeline
1-hover the cursor of the icons under the preview window and it shows you what the icons. You should see a previous or next icon. They move by single frames
2-use the up/down arrows to move by single frames, seconds etc.

To you it seems odd that the "moving clips" is not there on the main timeline (It is there if you use the overlay track) but to me it is odd if the option was there. Many programs do not have that option; to me it seems useless and serves no real purpose. It all depends on what you are used to

Thank you for your reply Canuck, yes I did find the arrows in the preview window it's just that I go down to the ones on the keyboard by habit and it shoots to the beginning of the clip, most disconcerting But I shall get used to it the more I use it and probably get as quick with it as I do with MoviePlus.

As I say always better with the devil you know, give me time and I will moan about MoviePlus if I ever go back to use it.

I dare say there will be something else I shall be coming on here to ask about.

Do a double click with your LH mouse key on any thumbnail in the library window. This will bring up "Single Clip Trim" where you have controls for moving the clip and brackets for isolating parts of the clip. See p 95-96 in the User Manual.
